  1. I met Mrs Thatcher a couple of times, as snooty as she sometimes appeared to `us northerners` what a sound down to earth woman she was and could give many a so called hard , man a run for his money. But ask your self this, which other Prime Minister has ever sat down drinking with a load of squaddies who had just done a brilliant job in the Iranian Embassy. Though many wont agree, she did more for this country than anyone indeed than any other Prime Minister, such as the fact it is almost certain the Falkland Islanders would be speaking Spanish now had it not been for Mrs Thatcher. I just heard some one saying good riddance.... how shameful. Regardless of your politics, The Iron Lady is dead all, the time for criticism and insult is now gone because nothing matters anymore, have a heart everyone, have simple human respect for her and let her rest in peace.
  2. Hi All, After a long absence I`m back to the forum.. Anyone know how the Aston Ponds complex is fishing particularly the Lilly Lake at the top of the complex, what works etc
  3. Anyone been fishing to Aston Ponds, particularly the Lilly Pond, anyone got any advice what works etc cheers malc Hannan
  4. Anybody considered what response Russia or indeed China would have ?? would they side with NK or the western agitators. NK may be impoverished and people starving but somehow all these impoverished nations always find the money for bombs and bullets, just look at the starving millions in Africa, some country`s have been at war over 10 years and still fire off thousands of bullets each week. Each bullet about a quid. Each missile between $50000 and half a million but they still find the money to buy them from countries that will supply them. Both Russia and China have plenty to spare.
  5. yes we lived on ripon street just round the corner there was also a shop across the road on the opposite corner called Newboulds I think. I used to go in there with my mates, they distracted him and I took a couple of those empty tall pasteurised milk bottles with a penny back on the bottle then go back later to return the bottles and get the tuppence back. The old man caught me at it one day and gave me a right clip and bared me from the shop but me mam went round and had a go at him for hitting me...... ---------- Post added 29-03-2013 at 17:08 ---------- does anyone remember the wet fish shop just along Woodbourne road from that corner shop, owned by people called Boldocks, they had racing greyhounds
  6. Having not been to Aston Ponds since I was about 10 year old well over 50 years ago with many wonderful memories, I was amazed yesterday at what has happened there. I watched for a while and even in this weather plenty of anglers were catching, some had fairly large carp. The reason i called to look is that my fishing club is about to start a series of matches on the Lilly lake right at the top of the complex. So I was wondering if any of you forumites out there can advise if you have fished that lake what works. Malc Hannan
  7. Cheers for that Carl, maybe much more simple even that that, that was his first input immediately upon joining the site. I think just a prat fits well here lol Malc
  8. I really do sympathise with you, your experience can`t be nice at all. I`m no solicitor nor do I know much about renting law but I would like to comment. It seems your LL is doing it quite wrong. But ask yourself, leaking boilers, rubbish in garden, repairs need doing, .....do you really want to rent off this prat and put him money in his pocket. I used to work for a rental company just doing checks on tenants and what repairs needed doing etc. Although some tenants are prats and seem to take delight in damaging and complaining, I can assure you that there are some absolute prats of landlords who wont spend a penny on repairs and expect you to live in a hovel but they want their rent on time and up front. I can also assure you that no matter what rent you are paying, there is certainly better property for rent out there and I can say, responsible and relaible landlords. If you are a reliable responsible tenant then I`m sure many a landlord will snatch your hand off if only because if the council is paying then rent there is no chance of him not getting his money. Good luck and get looking around for somewhere better if you can. Malc H
  9. Hello my old friend, great to hear from you. Hope you are well in body and soul. Yes I remember John, So your mum is 90, amazing, hope she`s keeping well. You know I only came on the site because I haven`t been on for a while and I just fancied a jaunt down memory lane. Strange though because I was only talking a few days ago, about "my Aunt Lil Whitely" and how she used to take me up the yard to the lav. she would always take my trousers off then carry me up the yard showing my little bits to the women in the next yard (they`re still little bits though lol) My mum and her were very good friends and my mum died in 1983. How`s your Walt, Moss and especially my mate Tommy. We used to fight like cats and dogs then we were mates minutes later. Malc
  10. I`m one Mary Poppins` big brothers. As she say`s that photo was taken in our back yard by my dad. at the top corner of the photo is our out side toilet withut any slates on because that was used as a short cut by those ruffians in the photo as a short cut onto the rec and they would jump on to the wall and up there then onot the rec. They broke the slates and we all got wet when it rained as we say for a number 2, unless we took an umbrella !
  11. Frankly my man I`m amazed at your seemingly derogatory comments and wonder why you took the trouble to make them. The almost insulting comment "unlucky enough to live in that area of Darnall etc" and "must be a real ball ache to know you haven`t progressed in life but hey ho" left me wondering. Who do you think you are. Possibly you should learn some manners, then learn to spell. amongst other things, this forum is for those ex pats of particular areas of Sheffield that they have fond memories of and who wish to exchange pleasant memories and comments about the old day. Oh forgot also, Woodbourne school wasn`t in Darnall it was in Attercliffe so as well as spelling and manners, you should look at geography..
  12. Just posted this question and it seems to have disappeared for some reason. If it pops up somewhere and duplicates this I apologise. I have a Sony Vio VGN-N38E lap top, can anyone advise how I can copy DVD`s on it please ? Do I need a programme etc Thanks Malc H
  13. Does anybody know the whereabouts of a chap called David Wild he should be around 61 now. I used to live in Ripon Street and our yard opened out into Bowen Street and backed onto the yard for the houses in Bowen Street. (We could look over into their yard as we went the 20 yards trek up the yard to the lav:hihi:) We all lived there until they slum cleared the whole place around 1968. The last I heard of him he owned a newagents shop somewhere around Norton area or that side of Sheffield. Cheers Malc
  14. I live in Rotherham and it seems to be that the labour council is the worst in history in the country and everybody complains about them with ridiculous traffic routing through Rotherham, megalomaniac planning and many other ridiculous hair brained schemes that continually wastes money and expense accounts that would choke a donkey. It defies logic that they still get voted in year after year. It`s long over due for them to be thrown out but what is there to replace them. No matter what your political persuasion, whoever gets in, Labour(not any more for the working man) the Cons(not a misspel) or the wishy washy Libs or any of the many lunatic parties, one thing they all seem to have in common, the politicians are all better off financially than those who vote for them and who pays for their bigger houses and cars ....?????????? yes it`s us working people who pay extortionate councils taxes for not much that funds their wages and idiot schemes. Yes I will vote but it wont stop me thinking, what point is there in voting... apathy rules KO
  15. sorry forgot to mention that there is only 1 north facing window in this room that doesn`t allow much light in being as it`s next to a neighbours Lleylandii hedge !
