  1. Hi all. Posted around this time of year, last year, to tell you about a charity cookbook published to support the National Osteoporosis Society. It was called Sharpe Chefs. Published by a Sheffield based publisher, Pickards Communications (the book publishing arm is called youbooks.co.uk), who did a brilliant job of design and printing! All author royalties have gone to the charity - thus far we've raised over £4000 for the NOS . . . not a fortune, but nothing to sneeze at either, and we hope it continues to sell well. We have just published the second volume - Sharpe Chefs II: On Campaign - this time supporting the work of the CHILDREN with LEUKAEMIA charity. The charity was chosen by Bernard Cornwell, the author of the Sharpe series of novels and the book is dedicated to him. I'm mentioning it here because of the Sheffield connection to the publisher, since it's always nice to support local businesses . . .and the rather more tenuous connection to one of your home-grown celebs, Sean Bean (who seems to elicit an interesting variety of responses on this forum, so I'm hardly sure I should mention him! ) Please take a look and consider purchasing a copy of Sharpe Chefs II (and Sharpe Chefs, too!) - and remember, ALL author royalties go to the charities. We would love to see the contributions grow for them - we hope you'll help us make that happen. http://youbooks.co.uk/ The cost of the book(s) is £12.99 and it's available through the publisher and Waterstones (soon).
  2. hmm - I note you don't argue the meat = Sean = trousers connection . . .!
  3. Over mine, too! I'll leave off to being American (it's an arcane British reference, right, lost since my ancestors left the storied isle . . .?) Let's see: ostrich = Australia = close to New Zealand = where they filmed Lord of the Rings = Sean Bean was Boromir = Sean Bean was Sharpe . . . (okay at a stretch - my student's would be proud - or laughing hysterically) but what's the butcher got to do with it? Hmm: butcher = meat = euphemism for physically attractive person = Sean Bean = who played Sharpe = wearing very snug, green trousers that = highlighted certain physical aspects . . . WAIT . . . that's circular . . . not to mention perilously embarrassing . . . I give. But I can tell you that there are no ostrich recipes, unless you want to substitute ostrich eggs for chicken eggs!
  4. You're very welcome - and sorry for misspelling your screen name. Not paying enough attention! Please spread the word, if it's not a hassle . . . and thanks again!
  5. It's more than just the conversion table Happyhoosier, every recipe has metric and US measurements. There's also a glossary to translate US/UK English. It has truly been a group effort to create something to benefit the charity - and for me, anyway, that's the most important thing. Twenty-six women from around the world, most of whom have never met in person, committed to a very worthwhile cause. No stand-outs, no prima donnas, no "I" just "we" - one of the most cooperative efforts I've ever known. To brass tacks - the US price is based on the mid-market exchange rate of about 5 days ago . . . I suspect it actually translates a few cents higher today (*$ dollar!)
  6. Post number SIX! Okay *fingers crossed* The link to the book: http://www.youbooks.co.uk The picture of the advertisement for the book: http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h81/Lyneille/orderonlineadvertA3.jpg Yay!!! (need to read the instructions about pictures, obviously, but the links work . . .) Thanks for your patience!
  7. Post number five - Well, let's see if it works now! Nope. Need one more, apparently! I like this forum - very nice features. Really. If I hadn't asked the mods first, this would probably deter me from finishing . . . and I suspect it does deter many spammers. I'm not one - really. A tiny bit strange, perhaps, but not a spammer.
  8. Post number four - I feel a little guilty for doing this, but I would really like to give you all the link to the book and show you the picture!
  9. Post number three . . . I'm getting ready to visit England next week - I'll get to celebrate my birthday while I'm there (very nice, I think . . . and no, I'm not going to tell you how old I am).
  10. HMM - post to make five posts . . .! What can I tell you? Let's see - I really do live in Las Vegas, Nevada. I do not live in a hotel-casino, however, nor do I work in the gaming industry. I teach history. Sometimes I teach Nevada history and TALK about the gaming industry!
  11. Hi everyone, Dropping in to let you all know about a new charity cookbook that was just launched by Sheffield based publisher, Pickard Communication. It's called Sharpe Chefs and was created to aid the National Osteoporosis Society (UK). I am one of more than two dozen women who worked on the book, and we are all very excited to see it reach fruition. As all author royalties will go to the NOS, we are hoping that many people will find a reason to add this book to their collection. As you might notice from the title, the book is themed around the Sharpe series of books written by Bernard Cornwell and the delightful films based on the series, starring one of Sheffield's sons, Sean Bean. It includes an endorsement from Sean, as a patron of the NOS, a foreword by Bernard Cornwell, and recipes from all of the "Chosen Men," the producers, and the director of the Sharpe series . . . along with historical information about the Peninsular Wars and the Regency period in England (there are several historian Chefs, myself included), information about the treatment and prevention of Osteoporosis, and another 96 recipes contributed by the Chefs who hail from around the world. The price for the book is £12.99 and it is available online at: (OKAY - JUST FOUND OUT I NEED TO POST 5 TIMES BEFORE I CAN TELL YOU WHERE TO GET THE BOOK. sigh ) It is available online through the Pickard Communication website . . *prepares to post five times . . .* You should also be able to find it soon in some of the local bookshops in Sheffield. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you will consider buying a copy of the Sharpe Chefs! I WAS GOING TO SHOW YOU A PICTURE, BUT INSTEAD I'LL POST FIVE TIMES . . .
