  2. NATIONAL CITIZEN SERVICE OPPORTUNITY This summer 2012, Clubs’ For Young People are delivering the National Citizen Service (NCS) for year eleven school leavers, we are running two cohorts and each cohorts will consist of fifteen young people. The NCS is a national project from the Cabinet Office and the Department for Education. The aim of the project is to empower the young people to understand their community and to become active members through volunteering in different community projects. The program consists of the following Phases; Pre NCS & Phase 1 – Introducing NCS (Likely time commitment 10/15 hours) Once a month meeting up session between March and June to sign up for the project and launching which will include: • Presentations to participants and families using visual aids such as DVDs of residential and activities outlining the course content. • ‘Team building’ activity session using existing staff, including exploration of what people bring to the group. Phase 2 – Outbound Residential Progressive personal development course using full range of outdoor activities (climbing, kayaking etc) and basing the whole experience on Kolb’s learning cycle, which naturally builds in planning and reviewing to every activity. • Activities becoming more challenging as the week progresses, and as the group develops the correct skills to be able to cope, for example culminating in an overnight expedition or challenging river trip. • Mix of challenging physical, mental, creative and skills-based activities mean young people can shine in some areas and be challenged by other areas. • Activities involve lots of structured responsibility, for example rotated team leaders/map readers, with young people also taking responsibility for some • domestic tasks, planning for their activities and preparing equipment Phase 3 – Community visit and skills week • Locality audit / community exploration including introduction to community champions. (1 day) • 3 Taster Sessions of volunteering (1 day in total) • Project management skills session based around a shared team passion, for example planning a music event, arts project or sports tournament (half day) • Team challenge (2 days) putting project management skills into practice, either by using a shared passion (such as music or sport) that young people decide on to provide a community service or through exercise such as Apprentice meets Dragon’s Den (see illustration). Phase 4 - Social action planning week • Presentation and communication skills workshop, leading into presentation to a community group telling them about the scheme and introducing discussion of what kinds of social action the community would welcome. • Consultation workshop, introducing range of approaches to capturing community views. • Small group exploration of social action options, including market research with community leaders and wider community. • Feasibility study of social action project idea (costs, practicalities, risk assessment etc). • Touch base sessions with two other NCS teams (1 team in person, 1 remotely) to practice community presentation and critique each others’ plans, followed by social activity. • Young people present their proposed project to the community group to gain support for what they plan to do and invite community feedback. Phase 5 – Part-time social action, fair/event and graduation • Young people-led social action with staff and volunteers in support role. Based on our experience to date social action may range from community service (garden clearance; putting vinyl disks onto computer) to arranging a trip or community event (family fun day / music festival etc) to environmental projects. The project will be fun but challenging providing young people with new skills, building confidence, community cohesion personal and social development. The opportunity for young people to gain a level 1, 2, 3 qualifications in Community Volunteering Qualification (QVC), Level 3 achievers will receive 50 UCAS points. The project will be managed and delivered locally by two level three youth workers and two volunteers All staff delivering the project are fully trained with enhanced CRB checks, and appropriate first aid and child protection certificate . We are expecting demand for the thirty places to be high, so please contact us at an early stage to give your son/daughter the best chance to take part. 5. Hi Footwork, Just to clear a couple of things up, i rarely go on the forum but felt quite strong about this point. Unfortunaltely i could not go to this show but have been at the last three and agree they are the most professional shows i have attended on the kickboxing scence. I think its great that you can watch all the fights on show tv and it proves how well everything is run. However to my original point, i have watched the incident in the 2nd round 10 tens in a row and in my opinion Brookes was sick after the ref count 6, try for yourselves guys and count with him, the ref was looking at him but did not wipe his gloves. Brookes was sick between 6-7 on the count and it should have been a TKO, unfortunately for Scott the ref made a mistake as we all do and will continue to as no one is perfect. I think the same ref has been at all the showdown events and for me has made one mistake in nearly 50 bouts, not sure how many rounds or minutes and i am sure is 100% professional and unquestionably honest. I am not being negative just think that for such an important match Scott was very unlucky not to get the TKO decision.
  6. Hi All, Just watched the sykes fight on shout tv and would like for someone to expain rules of the K1. I am from a boxing background and if someone gets a mandatory 8 count from a shot and at the end of the count they are not recoverd then the count continues to 10 and they are TKO. In the 2nd round Brookes took what i thought was an eight count and then was sick, in boxing he would of been counted out being sick does not give you extra time, it must of been nearly a minutes rest he had. In my opinion sykes was robbed, the only time you should be allowed to have any additional time to recover is from an illegal shot i.e. back of head/groin etc. I am pretty sure that sykes did not throw an illegal shot because if he did why did the ref start a count. Not sure if you can appeal to WAKO and overturn the decision to sykes but it should be at least a void decison and if poss a re-match which is unlikely as the guy lives in NZ. Despite what happened after that and Brookes came back well and his better fitness did show the fight should have been stopped in the 2nd. Very poor refs decision and Sykes won the fight. I don't know you Scott but know some people who do, you won that fight in the 2nd round by TKO and you can sleep at night knowing that, well done mate.
  7. Your sure did not miss much I’m sure you’ll see most of it on you been framed as most of the fights were absolutely comical. I’ve seen people on the forum saying that the venue was good; they must have been blind because the venue was the worst I’ve ever been to. The best thing that came out of the show was Paul Croppers fight that was the best fight of the night. The two brothers put on a good show but don’t understand why they both drew when they clearly won, and also I had a great laugh at some of the fighters trying to punch and kick. Great show Farad!! NOT! How come none of the wicker camp fighters fought?
  8. Jamie is an excellent coach one of the best i have trained under
  9. I am sure he has but what about everyone else who is teaching, just because you proficeient at a MA it does not automatically qualify you to pass on that knowledge there is alot more to it than that, in my opinion anyway.
  10. Do you get assessed on coaching/teaching ability as part of your higher level grading, i dont know many styles that do this!
  11. Hi Cyclone, What qualifications are their that allow you to teach martial arts, with so many so called governing bodies and many disciplines what actually allows you to teach. I know many instructors have many years of experience but is their anyone qualification that does allow you instruct in any discipline. Their is a big differnce betweem gaining a black belt and having a coaching/teaching qualification. In most other sports with one governing body, for example football their is a specific coaching progression. More specifically in canoeing which has many disciplines their is an excelleent system of "grades/stars" in ones own perforamnce and a very different route for actually coaching however you cannot progress as a coach unless your own performance is up to scratch in short the sport wants and has good coaches who are proficient paddlers with a minimum standard acroos the board. I am not sure if martial arts has this!! I am asking the question because i am interested in peoples views.
