  1. THE STEEL VALLEY WAY -Our Valleys own heritage multi-user route especially suitable for ELDERLY, DISABLED, PARENTS WITH YOUNG CHILDREN & PUSHCHAIRS & THOSE WANTING A SAFE CYCLE ROUTE. Especially created to get everyone out and about, experiencing the delights of our wonderful valley bottom, the river and open spaces. Creating a special trail along Ford Lane and linked to the town centre for those who normally struggle to get out and about and need a flat safe route more than anything outside of the planned development.. Why is saving Ford Lane and the Public Right of Way extremely important? It’s the only flat route through our valley bottom and someone has to care! Someone has to try and protect our heritage for our future generations. The main reason is to protect an ancient Public right of way that will benefit those in the valley who need our route the most such as Elderly members of our valley, Disabled, Parents with pushchairs and young children & cyclists, who are and always will be along with everyone else a big and special part of our community. Our aim is to provide a safe, enjoyable and appealing, traffic & pollution free green corridor running on the flat through our own valley bottom to Deepcar and the Trans Pennine Trail suitable for all. Eventually linking up to the Upper Don Trust Walk and on into Kelham Island and the Five Wiers Walk and Magna. What a fantastic industrial heritage trail this would be for Sheffield and for the regeneration for our own valley. Why are we opposing the proposed public right of way diversion? The new route will not be a suitable for disabled, elderly, parents with young children and prams. The new route will run alongside a planned new major road into Stocksbridge. There are concerns over safety, air pollution and vehicle noise levels due to the increased heavy traffic the development will also bring. It will have a negative effect on public enjoyment and it will not be an appealing route that will encourage people to use it and will be a substantially less convenient route for many. Where are we now? We have been campaigning to save our public right of way for quite a few years now and especially since Planning approval was given for the development. However, the developers now request the closer (stopping up) of Ford Lane and wish to divert our public right of way! And due to the number of people who have already apposed the closure it has been passed to the secretary of state to make a decision. We are now awaiting a date and venue for a Public Inquiry. possibly Thursday 2nd June TBC Why do we need to win the Public Inquiry? This is our very last chance to stop the total closure of Ford Lane and save our flat Public Right of Way. At the moment we are unsure where and when the Public Inquiry will be held but we know one thing! We must WIN! It will not stop the development, they have come too far for that but we do need the developers to compromise with their plans and alter them slightly for the benefit of our community. By compromising we believe it will help to create something even more special for Stocksbridge and produce a retail park that is even more community friendly offering retail and recreational facilities second to none. How can you now help? Sign our petition at the Works lunchbox to show your support. Provide us with your details and Join our campaign. Write to Stocksbridge town council and our local MP at the town hall requesting that they ask developers to review their plans and leave our Public Right of Way in its current flat location outside the development. Simply tell everyone else and make them aware! Join us at the Public Inquiry (let us have your details and when we know you will) Let us have your own comments on the campaign/project. 7. There are very few listed buildings in Stocksbridge even the old sam fox mill unless it has been done in the last few years. Developers originally wanted to pull it down as part of their plans for the retail park (to open up the road) untill it was pointed out that it was one of the oldest buildings in the valley. The plans were changed so they will only be pulling down the Abacus building (the old unusual corner one) at the junction of manchester road and hunshelf. When they were first redeveloping the building a lot of the old features got ripped out and skipped!! sad eh..

  12. Looking for a little feedback if possible....just wondering given that we have such fantastic countryside around us and there are many walks for the able bodied how people with disabilities are supported with rural walks and public rights of way etc in and around Sheffield. Please let me know areas which are supported best and why and the worst . Are there any rural routes in the north of sheffield suitable for wheelchairs etc? Are there any groups that are supporting and currently developing outdoor recreational projects for people less able given the present financial climate where everyone needs free activities. Does anyone know if anyone is campaigning for better provisions of such if not? any advise is welcome
