jamesstarky replied to laury's topic in Sheffield Musicians
We are The Limes, an nine piece band (brass section, two guitarists, percussionists, female and male vocals ect). We play an original mix of soul/ska/reggae/afro-latin, great grooves, sweet songs, damn danceable. We are looking for gigs in and around Sheffield, can do 45 - 60 min sets, no problem playing support slots. We have played The Harley, The Forum, The Greenroom, The Stockroom, Dulo, The HUBS, The Lescar. Contact me, James; jrbstarky@hotmail.com for some rough demos check: http://www.myspace.com/thelimessheffield facebook search for 'the limes' -

What's happening to the Walkley Cottage?
jamesstarky replied to bluecanary's topic in Going out in Sheffield
Yeah, I was impressed with the whole thing, it still looks cosy, warm and dark, like a good pub should, but its now cleaner and almost plush. Very tastefull. -

Cool, everyone is welcome. The current book is The Woman from Rome, a 1947 novel by Alberto Moravia. Check the previous posts, it seems to be a tricky one to get hold of, but Catherine posted to link which should be more helpfull than Amazon. (sorry its a bit obscure this time, we could always move the date of the next meeting if people are struggling, but for now lets stick with it. Check original post for the date.) One of us dabbles with creative writing I think, but I'm quite sure there are no authors amongst us. Yet James

Hey, thanks Toni. I'll PM you. James -
Yeah, you are right. But I'm sure Elenor Rigby is two chords; Em, C. I think you can learn a lot from understanding how a chord structure like that is organised. Off the top of my head I think that the verse is C - Em, and then the bridge stays on the Em and becomes Em - C, and then the chorus is the same but the chords are held for twice the beats in a bar. Or something like that (possibly the other way round). The result is that the two chords yield three different melody-fames and the changes between them are hooks in themselves. Definitely a break from the blues based structures of most Beatles stuff. I would love to write some soft rock for you, but my hearts not in it I'm afraid. Good Luck, though.

Groovy reggae/afro-beat band looking for gigs
jamesstarky replied to jamesstarky's topic in Sheffield Musicians
Thanks Holistic. Classic Rock, to answer your question; I don't know. We've only had 5 gigs so far, only two this side of summer, in The Forum and Dulo. We are new and unknown really. Thankfully because there are nine of us, we can muster a few mates. If I count specific heads, I could say that at The Forum last month on a Sunday night we brought 25 +/-. Hope that helps. Next time we gig I'll PM both of you. James -

And the next title is... Doris Lessing's 'The Golden Notebook' "...now considered one of the major works of twentieth-century literature...a landmark novel, that both changed and explained a generation...captured the heady mix of the early sixties when not just novels but political certainties were dissolving...this ambitious novel has no equal..." from the back of my copy Catherine can you post the date for the next meeting, cheers James

No problem We couldn't think of a new book, so I said I'd go to the shops on Saturday and see what takes my fancy (not very scientific I'm afraid). We did think of a date for the next meeting. But I've forgotten it already. I do remember that we all liked 'Therese Raquin', although some of us thought that the anti-cat violence was gratuitous. I read a different translation to everyone else, and I wonder if, instead of starting his new translation from scratch, he didn't just go on holiday and then copy the old one while changing some of the words when he got back? We'll never know. I'll post the newly chosen title and date on Sunday. James
