  1. Hi You replied to a thread of mine a while back and I wrote you to you but didn't hear anything. I'm starting an original band with a soul/reggae/electro/afro-beat feel. Mostly groove based as opposed to rock based. I write songs and play rhythm guitar/ bass/ sing backing vox (whatever is needed). I've set up bands before and gigged around Sheffield, and know quite a few other bands and promoters. I'm looking for a female singer at the moment. Do you fancy a jam? I'd like to hear the sounds you're into, and I can play you my songs and see how it goes. James 07909883634 jrbstarky@hotmail.com
  2. Hi Lara You're not quite the singer I'm looking for, but your voice sounds great on your myspace tracks. Hope you get together with some other cool peeps and get gigging in Sheffield soon. Good Luck James
  3. There is a good one gigging alot at the moment in Sheffield called Jungle Lion, they play mostly Jamaican and uk ska like Toots and Specials. In fact follow this link, the person posting may be in the band, otherwise google them. http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?p=5829354
  4. Hi, the question is... Can I use your shed or garage and your backyard to re-spay my guitars? I have two very cool guitars and I want to make even more beautifull by re-spaying them with vintage colours: a Fender Jaguar guitar and a Fender Jaguar bass (I'm a bit mad about Jaguars). The problem is that I live in a flat in Sheffield City Centre, without a shed/garage/garden or yard to my name. The paint is specailist aerosol guitar paint. I need to spay each coat outdoors and leave to dry overnight somewhere where it can be quite smelly. It takes 15 coats (more or less) in total (thats primer, colour and clear coats, several of each). Then it needs to hang for a couple of weeks for the coats to harden. So I'll need the space for 4 to 6 six weeks. I would like access for a couple of hours most evenings. The in-door space dosn't need to be that large; room to move, a bench or table would be great. Over-night the guitars can just hang from the ceilling in a corner out of the way. I would make sure there would be no mess, using dust sheets ect, and a saftey mask. In return I can offer the thrill of seeing the transformation of said guitars! Or I can offer my manual labour for any task you have. Or I can give guitar lessons for beginers. Maybe you have a guitar you'd like me to re-spray for you at the same time? Or if you'd prefer cash we could come to an arrangement. Please PM or e-mail me if you have somewhere I could use. Thanks James jrbstarky@hotmail.com
  5. I found some really good websites: manchester guitar tec uk guitar builders forum I'm only doing the body. Now my main concern is if these low temperatures and moisture in the air will effect the drying of the lacquer. I'll let you know how I get on, if I do. Cheers James
  6. Cheers I'm wondering if I should do it between Christmas and New Year. How long do you think it takes in total, and for the varnish to dry hard especially? Just want to work out how long I'll be without being able to play. Cheers James
  7. Hey Can anyone give me advice on how to re-paint my guitar body. I have a fender bass thats black and I just want to give it a new colour and a proper finish. I've looked at several youtube 'guides', just wondered if anyone local has any experience. Cheers james
  8. Hi If you want a non-traditional sound you could check out the Renegade Brass Band. They are a really lively nine piece all brass band that play funky instrumentals. They are sheffield based and have been gigging recently. this is their email: renegadebrassband@gmail.com and you can hear them here: http://www.renegadebrassband.com James
  9. Thanks for the interest shown in this old thread. What happened next was... I put a band together, a nine piece with brass section, percussionists, two guitars, two vocals ect. Lots of talent, lots of fun. We wrote songs and gigged around Sheffield between Aug 08 and Aug 09. We made a lot of friends and made 'em dance, turning out to be a mix of reggae/ska/afro-pop. You can hear us here: http://www.myspace.com/thelimessheffield Then the 'current economic climate' meant that half of us had to leave town, so we disbanded. Personally, I'm thinking about starting a new band, maybe something different but along the same lines. If anyone is interested, pm me. Thanks James Jrbstarky@hotmail.com
  10. Hey This is the Walkley Cottage Book Club signing off... its been a great ride, books were read, friends were made and we lasted about a year and half! I think our favourites were 'The Gloden Notebook' by Doris Lessing and 'Wizard of the Crow' by Ngugi wa Thongo. Thanks to everyone who contributed, James
  11. Hi, I'm a song writer looking for a female singer, with the aim of forming a gigging band with original songs. It would be great to find a singer who is confident and stylish, and also open and warm toward a crowd. (eg: Estelle, Karen O, Roisin Murphy, Santogold, La Roux, MIA, Amy W...) The band will be left-field pop; challenging and cheeky, using the best of electro/soul/rock/r'n'b/whatever to move the people (and ourselves). mail me if you're interested. James
  12. Hey I have a 15 Watt Fender G-DEC Junior, for sale at £100. This is a special amp and you should only buy it if its what you really need. (I realise now that its not what I need anymore). If you know a little about amps you'll think "£100 is a lot for a small practice amp!" And you should. (forgive me, I'm going to sound like a slimy salesman now) This is no ordinary amp. for a start its Fender, so its good quality. Its also a G-DEC "Guitar-Digital Entertainment Centre" Woo hoo! sounds fancy eh! What this means is that it has loads of digital effect and gadgits and I'll list them for you: a tuner, which is handy for keeping in tune. a metronome, which of course is good for keeping time. a drum machine with 15 different drum loops such as rock, grind, speed metal, reggae, latin, waltz etc. all these are variable in terms of tempo and volume (and they are not as tacky as the ones on a cheap keyboard). 16 guitar effects such as flange, tremolo, delay, reverb, chorus (if you haven't heard of these, they make the notes played do strange and sweet things). 16 amp effect such as Hot-rod, Metal, Jazz, Tweed, Blackface (these make the tone sound like its coming out of different amplifiers) 1 gain knob (which gives you the amount of distortion you want) 1 tone (basic treble - bass) 1 volume last but not least... Bass guitar backing (this is really cool; for example, if you want to practice your guitar solos and you're playing in the key of A, this is what you do: Select the 'Rock' drum loop, and select the bass line to play along with it, also in the key of A. It sounds like there is a little band playing inside the amp! and then if you want to practice your funky rhythm styles in the key of B#, all you do is select the 'Hip-hop' drum loop and change the bass line to B#. The drum loop and the bass line will just keep playing until you stop it. So its great for practicing. Oh, yeah and you can also plug a CD or Midi thing into it and play along. I bought this year as a present to myself coz it looked like so much fun, (from Wavelength guitar shop on London Rd Its in perfect condition, I've got the manual, but there was no box.). It is fun but I'm selling it because not long after that I realised that I needed a bigger amp for gigs, so I bought one and therefore now have two amps. You are welcome to come and try it out, I live near the centre of Sheffield near the Uni. 13. Hi I'm organising a 'last-minute' gig at The Lescar this Sunday, between 8 and 11pm. There is no money involved. people won't be charged and bands won't be paid. There won't be much promotion other than a few posters in the usual places. There will be a decent sound guy and PA. And of course it's bank holiday Sunday so there will be a good crowd down anyway. My band are playing : The Limes : http://www.myspace.com/thelimessheffield we are upbeat and lively, a mix of soul, ska, reggae and afro-latin grooves. We have some solo acoustic acts and a spoken word performer lined up, but we are still looking for another band. Ideally we'd like something fun and lively, not too 'rock' and nothing that will scare the punters away. So if you're interested, send me a message. Cheers James jrbstarky@hotmail.com
  14. The Green Room on Division St used to have a interesting acoustic night on Wednesdays, run by or called Opus I think. Dulo on Cemetry Rd has a night called Acoustic Soul once a month on a Sunday. The next one is Apr 19th. I think they prefer non-rock stuff. James

  25. 'Che' double bill on Thursday evening, New Years Day, from 6pm. I've heard different reviews of the Che films (its in two parts, both a couple of hours long I think) The Showroom has a special preview of both parts in one night and it kind of appeals to me, even though it will be about four hours and could be too much, even if its good! Does anyone want to meet up in the bar before or after? James
