  1. Sorry, not my cup of tea. But good luck with finding someone.
  2. I mess around with a few, not vintage, but recent: korg volcas and arturia microbrute. Fun indeed. I'm hardly a keyboardist, more a guiarist into twiddling knobs. Tell us more about your krautrock idea. James
  3. Actually Brilliant! Genius song writing. Thanks for sharing. Please let us know if you are gigging. Love it. James ---------- Post added 08-11-2015 at 10:10 ---------- This year I found myself buying several little synths called Volcas, and started putting ideas down with my loop pedal. So they are not 'tracks' or songs, there's no possibility to mix or produce, but i like the immediacy of it. If anyone wants to develop something similar let me know.
  4. Or you could try this: a big barbershop choir. It might sound cheesy but i imagine its a great feeling to be part of such a big thing. http://hallmarkofharmony.co.uk
  5. Hey Dan that sounds amazing, i'll pm you. James
  6. Yes, thanks for the advice, Wickes had the best value PVA, although it said 'builders' something or other, its always easy to water down. i'm using it for sealing the paper on paper lanterns, getting ready for the Sharrow Lantern Carnival. james
  7. No worries steve, I Just checked out that synth you've got and its pretty cool. I could send you something but I'd hesitate to call them 'tracks'. I'm in no way an analogue snob, but I don't use editing software much. I prefer twiddling knobs and having as few options as possible. I'll pm you. james
  8. Hey thats a very poetic dig in my direction. I have to say that I've been rushed off me feet this week and struggled to find the time to sit down and reply properly to your previous reply. I'd like to say 'you know how it is', but maybe you don't. Sorry for that. Anyway, now I can no longer see your message. But it sounded interesting. So all I can say is that I'm still here but I can't promise to reply immediately. James
  9. If you've got a Volca Beats and fancy a jam, get in touch. I've got a Volca Keys and would like to see how they sync. In fact if you haven't got one but have other drum machines or synths and fancy a jam, that would be cool. James
  10. Where can I buy large amounts of PVA, near the Moor? Thanks James
  11. What's going to happen in Sheffield Central? Last general election the Libdems came very close to Labour and the Greens were way behind. But this time the national media say that support for Libdems will drop significantly and be diverted, to Green? I've heard Labour's Paul Blomfield is good for Sheffield but his vote might be split by Ukip. Sheffield is on the Green's list of possible wins.
  12. I started this thread, seems to be nearly two years ago. In that time Mens Sheds has become a whole movement, with the same kind of principles I had in mind. It must be common sense. (Of course in that time I haven't done anything about it, I even moved to Manchester: a terrible idea! now I'm back). But its good that this thread has been keeping the idea alive in Sheffield. I still I think Mens Sheds are important and we should have some here. I'm now employed as a development worker at St Mary's Community Centre (on Bramall Lane). We have a project called TimeBuilders, which helps people be active in their community; all sorts of people, doing all sorts of things. I'm going to ask around and see what the opportunities are for some sort of Shed in the Sharrow area. I'll update this thread and hopefully this discussion can continue. James ---------- Post added 07-01-2015 at 22:41 ---------- Here is something good: Repair Cafe - Heeley City Farm - Sat Jan 24th 2015, 10 - 3pm Got any broken household items that need fixing but you don't know how? Bring it along to Repair Sheffield's Repair Cafe and volunteer fixers will take a look at it and see if they can work their magic on it.
  13. Hey, did you find a guitarist yet? I 'm a rhythm guitarist/bassist, into grooves. james
  14. The debate about wages is always a good one, but this thread is about alternatives. Brand is calling out for ideas and different ways of doing things that aren't heard in the mainstream media. Does anyone have experience of other workplace organisation types? Like Co-operatives, collectives, or non-hierachical methods?
  15. Russell Brand has been talking about a political revolution for a year now. He has been attacked for being naive and a hypocrite. People seem especially offended that he says 'don't vote'. At the same time a lot of young people share this dissatisfaction with mainstream politics. Here in Sheffield quite a few people went to a screening last week of his conversation with Owen Jones in which they explored his ideas a bit more. I was there and a few things struck me: 1.He says 'don't vote', but he doesn't say 'and sit on your arse'. He says 'get out and take action, organise, form new networks, and help each other'. 2.He is positive. He thinks the capitalist system is screwing us and the planet, but he thinks it can be changed, and he promotes other people's positive ideas and actions. 3.He says its not the immigrants, benefit claimants and powerless who are to blame. He says its the corporations, the establishment, those with power. 4 He doesn't say 'follow me, I have all the answers'. He says 'I'll amplify the voices of those that are not heard'. It feels like he's the only person saying these things in the mainstream media. And a lot of people hate him for it. I'm wondering if there are other people here who want to talk about these things. Not about him as a person, but alternative politics.
  16. I came to Sheffield looking for work, an economic migrant. No, thats not right, I was looking for more than that, I wanted to make a home, and thats what I did. Now I love sheffield like a member of my family; not always right, not always easy, not always pretty, but I belong here. Then I had a midlife crisis, moved to Manchester for more work, but only lasted a year before coming home to Sheffield. It sounds like you are aware already, but the things you list are quite superficial aren't they? If you want to make this your home you will be welcomed. But if you will judge our city on its facilities instead of its opportunities to participate, you will be dissapointed. I love Sheffield because its so easy to join in, get involved and make a contribution. I used to live in Hillsborough. It has too many betting shops for my tastes but so many other things going on. I'm sure you'll settle in nicely. james
  17. Let us know if you find someone who can deal with Jags. If you can't, you're welcome to have a go on mine, and if it suits I can do the same adjustments on yours. My main problems were odd buzzing on the fret board, and annoying action. I've kept the stock bridge, and stopped movement of the lugs with plumbers tape. I've shimmed the neck slightly, and adjusted the truss rod to make the neck a bit more concave. That sorted the action for me. The biggest improvement was putting heavier strings on, going from 9s that it came with to 11s and made it feel more stable and comfortable. James
  18. I think that's the right approach. I work full time at the moment but I can put 'a little time' into starting discussions and finding out what exists in terms of support, and build from there. PM me if you want to meet up for a chat. Cheers James
  19. Hi Graham I've managed to set up my own Jag ... a process of reading every 'net thread and experimenting for three + years. And I think I've got it right, for me at least. Although I am always tinkering. I'd gladly offer any advice I can give for the price of a pint. PM me if you want. James in Hillsborough ps: I don't want to take work away from local guitar techs. I normally prefer to go to the guys at Wavelength on London Rd for my everyday tech needs, but Fender Jaguars are not everyday guitars and not every tech has experience of them, especially their bridge and trem system.
  20. Thanks for your encouragement. Maybe I'll have to set something up myself. I've been thinking how important it is these days to share skills (and tools). I guess thirty or forty years ago you'd always know someone on your street who could give you a hand fixing stuff, and of course there was a totally different culture of 'make do and mend'. I have a feeling a lot of people these days will need to be repairing and making their own stuff. But instead of it being about only you and B&Q, it could be more community building thing. Especially to give a chance for people who've practiced skills all their working lives to pass them on. I've heard there is a 'repair-fair' in Heeley, you can go along with your bits and bobs and get them fixed or fixed stuff for other people. Sounds good. It would be cool to have more permanent places, workshops you could drop in anytime of the week. If anyone has any ideas to add, lets hear 'em. James
  21. Yo! I'm folk curious. Or at least I like the bands you've mentioned. I play rhythm guitar or bass, can do backing vox. I can write songs if asked. I might be a bit old, but I swear there's an indie kid inside me trying to get out. Have you had any other interest?
  22. Hey Gabbi, thanks for your interest. It looks like this is going to be a slow process, but that's okay. I'll pm you and keep in touch, because drummers are are gold dust. James
  23. Good question. I don't want my own shed or tools. I want something like a library; but instead of sitting and reading someone else's books, I want to pop in and use someone else's tools now and again. Maybe have a chat and get a bit of advice. Fix stuff for the kids and so on. Like a community DIY club. Surely there must be something like that? James
  24. I am a man without a shed. And no mates-with-sheds either. So I'm looking for a place I can go to with my 'stuff-that-needs-repairing' and borrow tools and do it myself while I'm there. Are there such places in Sheffield? It seems like there should be this sort of place; a DIY club or group, because we can't all afford to have our own sheds and tools. Yet we need to be repairing more of our own stuff. (I'm not talking about 'wood turning clubs' that get together and show off their skills, but work on in their own homes) If there aren't any places like this, can someone be my mate-with-a-shed:) James in S6
  25. Cheers Tom, thanks for your kind comments, I've PM'd you. James
