    Hi all

I lived in Page Hall from 1964 to 1981 & have to say it was a great place to  grow in during this time, we lived on Hinde House Lane 4 kids in the family 3 boys & 1 girl, we all went to Firs Hill then to Firth Park school. We were all members of Fir Vale Methodists church & I had 7 happy years as a member of 2nd Sheffield Boys Brigade.

There were loads of kids growing up in the same area & was never short of things to do or friends to do them with.

We had friends from Page Hall, Fir Vale, Firs Hill, Grimesthorpe, Whiteways, Firth Park & Shiregreen, so got into trouble in all of those areas!!

Don't go back to the old area anymore but I'm aware it not the place it used to be which is such a same, it was a great place to grow up.

Hi Joe, I grew up at 97 Hinde House Lane 1944 to 1968 when I got married. I was in 53rd BB at Grimesthorpe Reform Chapel but knew Malcolm Cook at 2nd. He became Captain at some stage. Recall going to various BB events at Fir Vale .

    John

  3. My wife was  working in the Intensive Care Unit at Northern General. One of the patients came out of sedation & she told him that men  had landed on the moon - he said don't be so silly !!!   I was in London on business & saw it in a tv shop window.

  4. I don't remember ever having to give my parents date of marriage when applying for a passport . It doesn't seem to make sense as many people don't get married . Are you sure you have read the form correctly ?

To answer your question specifically it costs £11 from the GRO   ( General Register Office (GRO) - Official information on births, marriages, civil partnerships and deaths ) but you need to go on say Freebmd  to find the certificate reference first.

Stephen Hill Road, Crosspool. Some great cycle rides round Rivelin and through Lodgemoor and the woods to come out at the swingboats on the A57.

Ladybower, Bamford, Hathersage not far away.  Don't think I'd get far today - the number of cars on the road would put me off for a start.

I certainly remember the swingboats  ; was there a café there too I seem to remember ?

  6. 97 Hine House Lane was where I lived from birth in 1944 until marriage in 1968 & loved having Firth Park , the  lake & library nearby. I went to  Owler Lane  Infants & Grimesthorpe Junior school, then Hinde House Secondary. My grandma Morris live at 43 Rothay Rd & I spent a lot of time their & trainspotting at Brightside.   My other grandparents lived at 309 Petre St which is now demolished.

  7. Under Deeds dating back to the 1920's,  on  closure ownership passes to the Wesleyan Reform Union.  At present 2 church members  are doing a caretaker role checking premises  are  ok etc   . On 1st April that stops when ownership passes to  the WRU which has its HQ at Jump near Barnsley.   People from a Sheffield Church  who expressed interest in buying it attended the final service but nothing agreed yet .

  8. GRIMESTHORPE WESLEYAN REFORM CHAPEL CLOSING SERVICE

Very sadly I have to tell you that Grimesthorpe Wesleyan Reform Chapel is to close after 170 of service to the people of Grimesthorpe . The original church was built in 1851 . In 1887 it was decided a larger building was needed &   the  Church you see today was built alongside the old one  which became   the present  schoolroom .  The Church was home to the 53rd Sheffield  Company of The Boys Brigade started in  1932 &  a Company of The Girls Brigade started  in 1934.

A  Closing Thanksgiving service  for present & past members & friends will be held in the Church  at 3pm on Saturday 25th September.

But remember every house shops and people on Carlisle rd .Yes --Life boys and Boys Brigade run by Mr&Mrs Wise who devoted their whole life to the Grimesthorpe Wesleyan Reform Chapel. Philip Breeze -Barry Whittingham Norman Mills Keith Wild -who will be (hopefully ) 80 on the 16th Aug  next week . --and many more people of Grimesthorpe / Page Hall  etc who went to Owler Lane  never knew their was an old Grimesthorpe site till I accidently  met a lady last week outside a cafe on Bellhouse rd  who used to live on Draper St. --Dont know if anyone will read this post --as I understand it may not exist any more . -- good health to anyone who may read this.

Hi John, Its good to hear from you. THere have been lots of posts on hear about Reform Chapel & BB in recent years. I haven't heard anything about Keith Wild for years but I don't live in Sheffield so its not surprising. Gordon Kay is still around but not in good health. Joe Cooper lives at Wentworth but had  stroke a few years ago &  has lost his wife Pam .  Alan Foster died about 5 years ago; he donated me an album of all his brother Eric's photos of BB Battalion Camps.  I have just heard from Irene Reynolds (Ian died 12 years ago) that Reform Chapel will be closing in coming months. Really sad  news !!

I am still involved in BB as President of Teesside Battalion. Hope you are well . Will PM you with my email address. Hope you are well.Best wishes, John

Doing some family history and have discovered that a great grand aunt is buried in Sheffield General Cemetery.

I've been looking at the burial research page and see that there is a CD available to purchase.

I then realised that my laptop no longer has a CD drive so no point in buying it!

And the 'Contact us' link does not seem to work on the Research page.

Does anyone have the CD to confirm that she is there?

Her name is Edith Ellen FLINT nee Prior.

BIRTH 26 FEB 1879 • Woodstock, Oxfordshire, England

DEATH 2 APRIL 1941 • Sheffield, Yorkshire West Riding, England

I would then be happy to make a donation to Sheffield General Cemetery Trust to try and locate the grave.

I'm also curious as to how a young girl 120 miles away aged 20 might have met someone from Sheffield around about 1900.

    Thanks

Regarding travelling , many of us who have researched our families found that they moved to Sheffield back in the 1860's largely because they  were  poorly paid agricultural labourers or worked in agriculture related trades (my gt grandad was a joiner & wheelwright) & they became aware of the many jobs available in Sheffield particularly in the steelworks. My family came from Lincolnshire & it is no surprise that this movement of people followed expansion of the railways. It seems surprising that information of job availability became known some distances away but it did probably by word of mouth or possibly newspapers.

  11. Yes she is there . Entry states : Consecrated area   Burial  Number 36981  Grave plot  P1 number 182  Date of death 2 April 1941 date of burial 7 April 1941 Name Edith Ellen Flint age 62 married address  31 Parsonage Street. She was born 1879 according to the MI. Sheffield General Cemeteries Trust have a website  gencem.org. Don't the census returns help re why she went to Sheffield ?

    Hope that helps, John

    Fatorini on Barkers Pool.

My late cousin Michael Moore worked at Fattorinis.  for some years in the 60's & 70's. I also knew the watchmaker there who had previously worked with me  at English Steel but cant remember his name. Anyone remember them?

The Boy's Brigade in Pitsmoor (1950s) had two 'chapters': Petre Street Methodist chapel and Lopham Street Methodist chapel,

The Captain of Petre St Methodist BB company was Albert Drury Smith in the 1960's; cant remember the number.  Albert's son Tony is currently captain of Coal Aston BB company. There was also a BB  at All Saints Anglican Church - the 15th Sheffield which my dad was in .

A friend, Terry Eckersley, was leader of a Boys' Brigade troup (are those the right words?) and used to swirl the baton. He lived in Grimesthorpe. This was late 40's and 50's.

I think Terry Eckersley was in 53rd at Grimesthorpe Wesleyan Reform Chapel. I was in that one & seem to remember his name.
