Thanks for the memory jogging Sunbeam, I can remember most of those mentioned, what years are you referring to? Do you remember Slacks Bakers, Sauls grocers, Tandys butchers, clarks of retford, was there a coliseum chippy as well? There was a Co-op on Heavygate Rd Nostalgia, it's a thing of the past

We went to the pool at beacholme, that was a treat for us, in 1968 we were staying at a caravan site further up the road called Carrington Drive caravan camp, which resembled the one on carry on camping with a cheesy sand pit & a set of swings I can remember the juke box at the side of the swimming pool at beacholme blasting out 'Mony mony' & Bruce Chanels 'Keep on'. Nostalgia, it's a thing of the past!

Where was your paper round when you were younger?
Pete R replied to spudgun's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
My round took in lower wincobank, Barrow Rd, Newman Rd, Vauxhall Rd etc, 1970-71, I delivered for Beedhams on Fife St, morning papers & the star, 6 days a week for 17/6 (87 1/2p). Nostalgia, it's a thing of the past. -

There's a book all about Sheffield Trams, it's been about a few years now but you might get one off amazon or similar. the ISBN is 1-85794-040-7. it's called 'A nostalgic look at Sheffield Trams since 1950' by Graham H E Twidale. It's fascinating to see some of the old buildings in Sheff before they knocked it to bits Nostalgia; it's a thing of the past

Looking for Stuart Turton from the Cliffe
Pete R replied to arrodbo's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Are you the Stuart Turton who worked at Kennings on Penistone Rd? -
Do you remember the crown hanging outside the old star and telegraph buildings on high st, due to the fact they were constructing the subway at the bottom of fargate/high st the cherry picker couldn't get near it to take it down and it was still hanging there the following spring! Nostalgia, it's a thing of the past

It's called compensation water, they have to keep the flow of the water in the river just past the reservoir to a similar level as if there wasn't a dam there. This compensation water stops the river bed drying out & enables water to be abstracted further down. Nostalgia, it's a thing of the past

I did actually mow the dam wall at Ladybower whilst working for Severn Trent, it'll be 20 years ago now, 2 other chaps and myself cut it with all wheel drive industrial mowers & strimmers, when you got closer to the top the angle became steeper, it would have been a lot easier had I got cloven feet, I daresay It could be done now since the wall was raised in the angle was made even steeper. Nostalgia, it's a thing of the past

I lived at wincobank 66-74, when blackburn meadows was still operating the steam blocked the sun out until mid morning, couple that with an easterly blowing the whiff of excreta from the sewage works it was a marvellous place to live, only kidding, it should have been twinned with chernobyl!

I was born in walkley in the mid 50's, in my grans front room on camm st, I can remember the bus terminus outside the house, moved to hoole st in 1960, the picture house was still open on south rd then, across from reg lentons fruit shop and gower & burgons supermarket. Nostalgia- it's a thing of the past

I haven't got any photo's although if you can get your hands on a copy of 'Walls Across The Valley' by Brian Robinson it shows the construction of both dams in words and pictures. The answer to whether or not the dams leak is that they both have minor leaks, although Howden is the wetter of the two but they've been standing for nearly a hundred years now so I shouldn't worry. The walkways around the overflow shafts at Ladybower were removed because when it was in flood, debris used to collect behind them, and it was considered there was a risk of the walkways would give way under the increasing weight of water and in turn block the shafts

I worked for severn trent for 17 years, and the first few were spent in the derwent valley, people used to say to me they would pay to work in a place like that! I spent a while working inside Howden & Derwent Dams, periodically opening and closing the manually operated 36" valves (a 2 person job), by opening the valve about 3" you would get a huge plume of water outside, the towers are joined by a tunnel inside the wall, half way along the tunnel there is a 'plumb line' telling you the wall is vertical, it does move fractionally when the dam is in flood. Ladybower didn't impress me as much as the old dams, although I can claim to have cut the grass on the embankment, it used to take 3 of us 3 days with machinery, and it kept us super fit walking up, down, and accross it! Nostalgia - it's a thing of the past

I went to Burgoyne Rd 1960-66, Mr Cohen was head, he ruled with a rod of iron, other teachers-Mrs Wilson, Miss Ling, Mrs Nicholson, Miss Penrose, Mrs Clarke, Mr Davy & Mr Simmonds. Class mates-Tony Archer, John Unwin, Ron Hilton, Neil Cadman, Steve Simpson, Michael Naylor, John Naylor, Anne Stones, Pat Gibbons, Vicky Gott, John King, Leslie Richford, Paul Eckhart, Valerie Ambler, Jaqueline Clarke to name a few. I lived on Hoole St, my bedroom window looked on to the school, fond memories of that place, i'm glad it's still standing

I'm almost certain hawksfords on South Rd, Walkley had a cash railway, you popped the money from the sale in a container, pulled the trigger mechanism & shot the money on a cableway to the cashier, fascinating to watch. Nostalgia, it's a thing of the past

Yes i remember the names mentioned, especially the 'lip' who was glyn bell, tony vizard was in charge with gordon gregory as the foreman, other names- mick elrick, horace chapman (storeman), bob neal, cyril jacksons dad (the sweeper upper), I was the paint shop apprentice at the time (the lad with the long hair), lewis holmes was the sign writer, I've got some good memories from that place. Nostalgia, it's a thing of the past

I remember Mr & Mrs Binks on South Rd Walkley, sat on the 'plank', for a short back and sides, Mrs Binks would start the haircut & the old feller would finish it off, followed by a big blob of brylcreem. Nostalgia, it's a thing of the past

Pete R replied to anlabystreet's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
I was there from 67-71. Mick Glover was my form teacher, nice bloke though during sports lessons he'd put you through the grinder. Other teachers at that time: Mr Moss, Mr Goldstrawe, Mr Andrew, Mr Dowling, Miss Smith, Miss Frohock (cow), Mr Sagar, Mr Nicholson, Mr Stretch, Mr Keenan, Mr Keeton (buster), Mr Turner (head of lower site), Mr Ward, Mr Cutts. I could go on and on, who remembers 'spam' pemberton the deputy head & Crownshaw? Classmates: Andrew Surr, Brian Patrick, Keith Glover, David Wills, Mick Gilmore, Des Briggs, Geoff Capewell, Martin Clarke, Norman Bailey, Stuart Butler, George Patterson, Winston Reid, Liz Cook, Theresa Turton, Liz Rhodes, Gail Morris, Gail Pinning, Jean Maroney. Does the school still exist? I heard a rumour it had been bulldozed.
