  1. Hi all, thanks for a lovely final Book Club Meeting, it was the first of alot of "lasts" to come. As discussed I am having a going away pub crawl on Saturday the 24th of January. It is a costume event with the theme being British. Come as anything you think a British Icon or Institute..or hey just come as a celebrity. Please note: anyone appearing as themselves will be booed and spat on hahaha. Only joking I understand that some may just want to pop in for a quick drink. The plan of action is to start at The Walkabout Pub on Carver Street (in between Division and West) at 3pm. By about 5/5.30pm the plan then is to be at The Graduate Pub (Surrey Street, opp The Central Library). Afterwards those still standing will head down to Affinity bar (Campo Lane) before ending the night at Dempseys. I myself will be in a Dick Van Dyke circa Mary Poppins Chimney Sweep get up. No big if people can't make it, I imagine I will not have the best motor skills after the first couple pints hahaha. PM me for my mobile number if you would like. Thanks for such a great 15 months of literature sharing and just plain good company. I am sure I will be on the forum sporadically to give my opinions on your readings hahaha. Best wishes, Mocca
  2. Hope you are feeling better Pupster...sick at Chritsmas is a bit of a downer. I will be in the same boat as you though, I can barely remember most of the characters' names already hahaha. See y'all soon.
  3. Hope everyone has had a fab Holiday season. Am actually just about to finish Northern Clemency (only about 10 pages to go). See you all in 2009. Happy New Year!!!
  4. Hi guys, just letting you know that I bumped into Margaret last night and she confirmed that yes, the book she was talking about is The Northern Clemency. She still can't log on to the forum as herself though.
  5. hahaha, have just placed a hold on it through the library, I am 66th in line to get it. Hope everyone before me are speed readers. See y'all in December.
  6. My thoughts exactly pupster, I also didn't like the narrative written from the perspective of a female when the writer was clearly a man. It was a bit too "oprah book club" for me obviously written at a very basic level for people who have no real concept of what it would have been like for a woman in those/these times but blatantly trying to cash in on the current climate.
  7. hahaha Code13, couldn't agree more. See y'all on wednesday.
  8. Things like Henderson's would be fine to take over as they have been treated and packed in sterile conditions that would live up to border standards. being from Australia myself, I have sent back to my family lots of Sheffield Steel items, taken some lovely photos of the peaks and placed them in sheffield steel frames (with the sheffield stamp clearly visible of course) Good luck and enjoy the heat!!
  9. Loved it, loved it, loved it. See you all on Wednesday.
  10. Hahaha, brilliant. Just sent my order out to the cosmos; let's see if it works.
  11. Oh dear God!! Was just on a cinema website and they have made The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas into a film!! So I am guessing movie studios have decided to COMPLETELY give up on producing new ideas?!?!
  12. I think everyone enjoyed Notes on an Exhibition but I think there was more debate on the relevance of certain characters and how large a part they played in the novel compared to whether we liked the writing style/storyline.
  13. Sorry, it's Wednesday the 3rd of SEPTEMBER for the next meeting.
  14. G'day Ron, yep I muscled in my fave (sorry) as I think that will be my last meeting before I am shipped out of the country, boooo!! Just on a personal note though Book Groupers, I am having a few birthday drinks at The West End on Glossop Road this Saturday (the 2nd of August) from about 1.30pm to 4ish before heading to the Uni for Viva Climax, you're all welcome to come along and join me for a few libations otherwise I will see you next week.
  15. As I keep telling you young man, if you never smoke you will never be cool!! So the word in the office is that you had a good weekend SpiderPete, missed you while on the coast hahahaha. Maybe next weekend and this Australian Slut will be out to join you!
  16. Am just gunna quickly scim over it again on the weekend as I only re-read it the other month. Hope you enjoyed it shlg. I've just been reading an amazing book of poetry and re-reading Frankenstein, I haven't seen anything "new" lately that has inspired me to read. I am just waiting for the library to get in the new Marian Keyes for me.
  17. G'day Blanco, the young adult book would probably be a bit too much for your 13 year old....a bit too much sex and violence methinks. Your 13 yr old is a girl right?!? Sorry can't remember, if so you might wanna try Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging by Rennison. It's an absolute hilarious book, think Bridget Jones for teenagers, and also if they enjoy it Angus, Thongs is the beginning of a series. If your 13 year old is a boy I say Garth Nix or Horrowitz all the way. See you next month
  18. Not getting into all the previous jibes that have gone on but to answer the first post: I have been living in Sheffield now for 6 months and have found most "circut" nights are open to all genders and sexual orientations, having mostly straight mates I tend to go to straight bars and have had no issues. What I would love to see is a good Indie, Rock, Mod night. Corporation feeds this music desire in me but it's not the most ummmm sanitary of places (hahaha, don't mean to offend). Anyway good luck with it all mate.
  19. Ooooo, i am spoiled; A Spot of Bother? that's 2 of my faves in a row now!!! I didn't think much of Brick Lane, I wanted more from the sister's life and I dislike extremely descriptive writing styles, there is a time and a place to describe the light falling from a window in an entire paragraph (okay so maybe a slight exaggeration) plus I didn't find any of the characters at all likeable or i couldn't even feel for any of them....Mrs Islam was great though(Mocca's black hole space where his heart should be enters yet again hahaha). All in all I think I just couldn't really get into it as I was re-reading one of my faves and an amazing young adult fiction book which I thought far surpassed Brick Lane. But the whole idea of discussion on literature is that not everyone will enjoy it yet listening to other's opinions opens themes and ideas one may have missed....who liked 19 Minutes?! Yet the discussion afterwards was good. Sounds like I missed a good night. See you all next month.
  20. Hi all, hope the discussion went well last night. I was stuck over on Eccy Road with work mates and by the time it came for me to leave it was already pushing on 9pm. Hope you had a good night. Mocca
  21. Yeh I read Scarlett a few years back. Enjoyed it but of course it couldn't live up to the original. It was commissioned and approved by the Gone with the Wind society so they must have know what they were doing. I hope you enjoy it, am thinking it might be time that I re-read it as it's been a year now since I've visited Tara ;-) I finished Brick Lane the other night, proud of myself for not giving up and am looking forward to the next meeting.
  22. am enjoying the letters, everything else I am skipping. I am sure i am missing major plot themes and will get to the end of the book and go "eh?!" hahaha Have been re-reading one of my faves so I guess it is difficult to put that down and pick up Brick Lane, am sure it will be a good discussion though. Could anyone suggest any funny chick-lit? Have been reading some really heavy literature and non fiction and am in need of someting light and fluffy. Pupster; I think the plural of vortex is vorti hahaha
  23. WooHoo, The Book Thief is one of my favourite books!!! I am currently having to force myself to read Brick Lane, not enjoying it at all. Half way through and I find myself skipping entire paragraphs!!! See you in April.
  24. Mr librarian strikes again, found this link that I thought people might find useful. http://www.themanbookerprize.com/downloads/MBP_ReadersGuide_MrPip.pdf Oh and could someone remember to bring a copy so new members know who we are? I have returned mine to the library sorry. See you on Wednesday, whoops nearly didn't make it as I have dance class on wednesday. Have decided to give Salsa a miss though to discuss Mister Pip ;-)
