I always found it was best to do all the grid referances at home before setting out on any walk, this way you can avoid having to open a large map and trying to get grid bearings in the outdoors, especially in very windy conditions. I used to write everying down on a small piece of paper reducing the chance of the map blowing away or being torn to bits in the wind unless you use the lamanated maps, but these still blow away. I am thinking of coming along but due to health problems I do have to restrict my days out walking.

  2. Hi Morty

i was born in 1945 and lived at No 13 until my early twenties, so I was about when you was born, but I can only remember the Krugers living next to us. Mr Kruger had a motor bike and sidecar quite posh for those days. I can't remember when the phone box was erected but it was right outside our front door, I believe it's been gone for some time now.

  3. Hi cat

the telephone box was mine, it was the landmark for telling taxi drivers where to drop me off, well on the very odd time I could afford one. The rest of the time it was the long walk along Calisle Street, start off drunk at Spital Hill end and finish up sober and knacked when you got to Holywell Road. This was a regular thing after a night out in the Atholl, remember the swing doors.

I went for a walk today and past by the squire of Bradfields house, remember Tony Simmons, I still have his £1 note (Scottish). We will have to surprise him one day and call to see him.

  4. janie-m hi

Barry was Margarets brother-in-law, Margaret lived on Rothay 2 doors away from our parents house, she moved to Skelworth Close and lived there until she died.

Anne another of my sisters lived 3 doors below our parents house she now lives in Ecclesfield and is a regular on Fridays and Sundays in the legion at Chapeltown.

lolalola hi, yes you have the right lady, Joanne still lives in the area in what I know as the new houses but alas Mick is very ill right now spending most days in Western Park Hospital.

Hi, my sister Margaret used to do some work at the Hall on Holywell Road along with Malcolm Dickinson (I think it was Malcolm) I think she was the treasurer at one time. We and many more had quite a few family get togethers there. The last time I was there was to attend a dog training school but it did not work I'm still the same.

I agree with John Martin about the reunion being held at the Ball as to go elsewhere could take away some of the nostalgia of the event.

although I have not as yet been on a walk when you all get together for your map reading I would willingly pass on my small amount of map reading knowledge, as I have been lost many times (not lost as such just misplaced). I believe you live in the Chapeltown area like myself if so we could meet and share our vast lack of knowledge.

  7. Hi Albert

when I see my sister I will ask her about the number as she is in contact with one of our cousins, 3 lads John Peter and Paul. I believe that at least 2 of them worked for the Sheffield transport out of the Herris Road depot.

You are right about the housing conditions, I was the youngest of 5 kids, no bathroom just an outside toilet and a tin bath but my memories are more happy than sad. Imagine Parson Cross was like going out into the country side a breath of fresh air, so have times improved.
