  1. What is the date that you are all doing this walk.
  2. Hi sufc tom Seth Fothergill is a mate of my brother-in-law Mick Beardsmore, they used to drink in the Sheffield Arms.
  3. Jess22 I always found it was best to do all the grid referances at home before setting out on any walk, this way you can avoid having to open a large map and trying to get grid bearings in the outdoors, especially in very windy conditions. I used to write everying down on a small piece of paper reducing the chance of the map blowing away or being torn to bits in the wind unless you use the lamanated maps, but these still blow away. I am thinking of coming along but due to health problems I do have to restrict my days out walking.
  4. Hi steele if you are one of the Woods I would say you use the name Steele because you used to be a steel erector. If this is right we once met in Bedford when your caravan had been burnt down, and we now live very close to each other.
  5. Hi Morty i was born in 1945 and lived at No 13 until my early twenties, so I was about when you was born, but I can only remember the Krugers living next to us. Mr Kruger had a motor bike and sidecar quite posh for those days. I can't remember when the phone box was erected but it was right outside our front door, I believe it's been gone for some time now.
  6. Hi cat the telephone box was mine, it was the landmark for telling taxi drivers where to drop me off, well on the very odd time I could afford one. The rest of the time it was the long walk along Calisle Street, start off drunk at Spital Hill end and finish up sober and knacked when you got to Holywell Road. This was a regular thing after a night out in the Atholl, remember the swing doors. I went for a walk today and past by the squire of Bradfields house, remember Tony Simmons, I still have his £1 note (Scottish). We will have to surprise him one day and call to see him.
  7. Hi Gemini2 I used to live near to the telephone box on Rothay No 13 but old age and poverty as affected my poor memory, not my brain that still lies unused.
  8. Hi cat631 thanks for your concern and I will pass on your regards.
  9. janie-m hi Barry was Margarets brother-in-law, Margaret lived on Rothay 2 doors away from our parents house, she moved to Skelworth Close and lived there until she died. Anne another of my sisters lived 3 doors below our parents house she now lives in Ecclesfield and is a regular on Fridays and Sundays in the legion at Chapeltown. lolalola hi, yes you have the right lady, Joanne still lives in the area in what I know as the new houses but alas Mick is very ill right now spending most days in Western Park Hospital.
  10. Hi janie-m my sisters name was Beardsmore, before marrying it was Fowler also sadly no longer with us.
  11. Doe's anyone remember Bill and Edith Gandy from the Wharncliffe Hotel at Firth Park. This was a real pub before all this namby pamby theme things. It was a pub for real live music and on the odd occation a bit off dispute, but full of characertures, that is real people.
  12. neoteric thanks for posting the photo's of your Kinder walk, they brought back many memories for me.
  13. janie-m Hi, my sister Margaret used to do some work at the Hall on Holywell Road along with Malcolm Dickinson (I think it was Malcolm) I think she was the treasurer at one time. We and many more had quite a few family get togethers there. The last time I was there was to attend a dog training school but it did not work I'm still the same. I agree with John Martin about the reunion being held at the Ball as to go elsewhere could take away some of the nostalgia of the event.
  14. scoobz although I have not as yet been on a walk when you all get together for your map reading I would willingly pass on my small amount of map reading knowledge, as I have been lost many times (not lost as such just misplaced). I believe you live in the Chapeltown area like myself if so we could meet and share our vast lack of knowledge.
  15. Hi all keep thinking of coming along on one of your walks but after looking at Neoteric's photo's you all look quite fit. Not sure if an old gimmer like me would be able to keep up with you all, as I have not done any serious walks for a long time.
  16. Hi pigeon I think the connection to boxing is Ryan Rhodes but I have been wrong many many times, but i'm sure someone will either confirm this or correct it.
  17. Hi pigeon you are right, it,s the name of one of the rooms in the Ball and yes it has a boxing connection.
  18. Hi Neoteric guess you flew most of the way as I reckon you would have driven more like a thousand miles if you you went from Sheffield and back, but your times on the hills are very good.
  19. Hi Geotom I have sent a reply to your pm thanks George.
  20. Hi all can anybody remember a Dennis Wales who went to the School would have been there in the early fifties.
  21. Wopp I have lived in Chapeltown for 32 years and would not want to live elsewhere in Sheffield. It has good transport links, ie buses, trains and the M1 motorway, good schools, and plenty of take-away outlets. Also it takes only a short stroll and you can be lost in the countryside, quite a few pubs as well
  22. Hi okismoki yes you have the right people, and it does not matter where you lived on Halifax Road posh or not you looked after one of my Uncles so to me you are a Star thanks.
  23. Hi I know a John Vintin who is an electrician and lives or lived at Crookes, I believe he had been a postman at one time. Don't know where he is now but i'm sure he would not be hard to find.
  24. Hi Albert when I see my sister I will ask her about the number as she is in contact with one of our cousins, 3 lads John Peter and Paul. I believe that at least 2 of them worked for the Sheffield transport out of the Herris Road depot. You are right about the housing conditions, I was the youngest of 5 kids, no bathroom just an outside toilet and a tin bath but my memories are more happy than sad. Imagine Parson Cross was like going out into the country side a breath of fresh air, so have times improved.
  25. Hi Albert I never lived in your area, I was brought up in Grimesthorpe but I think my Aunt and Uncle and cousins lived there(Whithams). As a kid I remember going to their house, it was a different world to my area, it had fields and open spaces and the house had a bathroom, it did look posh to me, mind you that was many many years ago
