  1. That's it I'm never moving after reading this thread. I'm lucky that my surrounding neighbours are great. I only see them when they knock on the door to inform me of something, or we have occasional get togethers. it's a lovely street of houses that don't overlook each-overs gardens. I've know people who have suffered with selfish arrogant neighbours, it must be hell.

  2. My eldest daugther is in year 7 at secondary school. She seems to have settled in well, having made some good friends quite quickly.

However, I've been getting increasingly concerned that she has, with alarming regularity, not been eating her lunch (a packed lunch, sandwiches that she insists on making herself so she can have them just how she likes them).

My first worry was that she might be becoming too body conscious - she's not fat by any stretch of the word, but isn't a naturally skinny girl. However, she eats perfectly normally in the evening, often asking for seconds at dinner time, and certainly isn't barfing it up afterwards.

Every time I talk to her about it, I get the same excuse - "I forgot" - which I find quite hard to believe.

What advice would you give a concerned parent? I don't want to make matters worse by telling her off, but I'm worried - there are a whole host of reasons why eating lunch is important.

Sometimes kids don't have the confidence to eat in the dining hall when starting a new school. If she hasn't got a particular friend to sit next to she might be feeling uncomfortable in deciding where to sit. If she has made a friend maybe you could invite her round so your daughter can get to know her better. If this isn't the problem maybe it's just the sheer boisterousness of the dining hall that intimidates her but will get easier has she becomes more confident.

  3. I've had mine nearly a year. I downloaded loads of recipes from internet. It's great, I mainly use it for breakfast so I start the day off with a healthy smoothly. I use loads of spinach, beetroot seeds and pears mixed with almond or coconut milk. It's brilliant for making soups with too.:)

    What exactly is it please?

It's a blender that breaks down the fibre so you drink everything.

  4. What mess? As for pensions, things as become much worse for most since 2010 and, yes, you can Google it if you want. As for the current crop of tories, what do we see? Victimisation of the unemployed, Victimisation of the disabled, victimisation of the civil service including local authorities, victimisation of the NHS, victimisation of the police, victimisation of the fire service, victimisation of the armed forces, victimisation of the education system, victimisation of families etc. Some people have very selective memories it seems

I don't need to google anything thank you, my memories are very clear. Anyone with a private funded pension knows what Gordon Brown did to their funds? Public sector workers pensions are still excellent regardless of having to pay more into their own pots. Of course things got worse, The conservatives had an empty purse and debt from labours spend spend spend years. It's a simple logic labour struggle with, don't spend money you haven't got. So blame labour for all the suffering you mention

  5. Thanks for the link Ian.

Is there any chance of getting a reduction on our Council Tax by getting rid of the entire Council and putting the University in charge of the City?

The University do a fantastic job in promoting our city and moving it forwards, whilst our Council...

    Regards

    Doom

I wish. But then I thought the planning office only employed numpties not people with brains and common sense.

  6. The residents of Door are more intent on making sure the the builders do not get a cup of tea or use the bog.[they would have to have the seat disinfected or changed as their arses could not possibly have contact with the lower classes].

At the same time they must try to avoid paying V.A.T . by offering cash[at a reduced rate of course] ,this cash has usually been accumulated by fiddling the cleaner, gardener or car cleaner ,[also paid in cash from the inherited funds accumulated on the backs of Sheffielders who live on the Gleadless Valley or Arbourthorne and who by a stroke of genius by the Dore mob pay all their hard earned money from sweat shops back into the shops and businesses owned by the upstanding citizens that reside in the leafy suburbs of Dore and Totley.

Bit of a sweeping statement don't you think.

  7. I would miss the breakfast show if it went, I would miss Toby Foster if he went too so I would never call for it to go but is it time for a format change on this show?. Some mornings it's as boring as hell, I certainly don't blame Toby for this but there's just not enough local news for them to discuss to keep it interesting in my view.

How about introducing some national news into the show when there's nothing much to talk about locally?, maybe more comedy too with a few different random studio guests to create some fun?. These last months I've really tired of hearing all about our local pavements and roads, Page Hall and the Slovakian Romas, our diets, the Barnsley freedom riders etc etc etc.

I also think they need to find a better super-sub than Paul Walker, I like Paul and in the sports dept he was second to none but blimey he's damn boring on the breakfast show even though he does try his best.

I like Kat a lot and think she should replace Jen.

I know some will disagree with all that but there must be also some out there that agree, tell us what you all think.

I listen to Radio Sheffield between 7-8am to catch up on local news. I agree with you though about narrow subject matters. I'm sick of hearing about the freedom riders etc. I like Toby Foster and think he would be a brilliant presenter if Radio Sheffield followed the LBC formula of phone-ins on current topics that impact on society as a whole and not just regional. I love really good debates.

  8. Unless I a mistaken, Leeds has a LOT more shops and a much bigger market.

In fact the reason Sheffield Market was in such a state is so many people choose to go to Leeds instead.

Maybe now the 'Freedom Riders' have to pay on Northern Rail they will shop in a Sheffield Market instead of Leeds and Barnsley

    :hihi:

  9. Retiring at 55 unless medically unfit is far too young. No one should be expected to do a job they are unfit for therefore other work should be taken to fill in the years to the pensionable time. The pension accumulated Is still there when you retire but expecting to take it at 55 is unreasonable, it's possible you would have more years as a pensioner than in employment. Most people with private pensions work way beyond 65 now. In many cases including mine because we are still fit and like the stimulation of being employed. PS my 2 son-in-laws are firefighters so I am well briefed about their jobs.

  10. In senior school and at that stage of education i can see the point.

To set back your childs education is shortsighted in that circumstance.

This applies to nursery and primary school too though which is ridiculous.

The point of school at the nursery stage is to get you used to learning and interacting in a certain way, the same applies to primary school to a degree, the last week before the holidays the kids are usually watching films or drawing so they wont really be missing much education wise.

This is my bug bear, the rule is black and white and has no provision for common sense, common sense saves time and money in most cases of red tape and legislation.

You cant underestimate what children get from a good family holiday in this, interacting with others, getting a more worldly wise view of life etc.

All as important to a childs development as what they would be doing in nursery or primary school.

Common sense needs to prevail, none of the rules surrounding the fines takes any of that into account or encourages a family life, including the silly fine being per parent! Which was my original point. Its unfair.

Its also unfair that a family misses a holiday because they cant afford it after working hard all year. They all have to suffer because the computer says no!

Don't you think having an attitude that we can do whatever we like regardless of rules is not really setting children a good idea. Families can have holidays and bonding time in the school holidays it doesn't have to be 2 weeks in the med which is IMO ishardly educational anyway. Be imaginative. The kids will be happy to just have your attention they don't need expensive hols to enjoy themselves.

  11. Parents should not expect their children to lie to teachers, what kind of an example is that setting them. Prices for holidays have always been higher at peak times and the majority of parents accept this and act responsibly even though it's frustrating. Like many parents we holiday to suit our pockets. We have had some fabulous holidays camping in France. If you stay away from the most expensive sites it's a very affordable holiday. I want my kids to know life isn't always fair and sometimes sacrifices have to be made. That's life.
