  1. I adopted 2 adult cats from RSPCA in Sheffield last Match and they were really nice, helpful and efficient. I work full time, and live on quite a busy road (which would normally preclude me from adopting) But they took the pragmatic view, which is that there is nothing but fields to both sides and the back, and that as the cats were older (therefore statistically less likely to be involved in an RTA) and I would take all possible steps to discourage them from going near the road, I could adopt. Nealy a year later, touch wood..........2 happy little cats who love playing out in the fileds, weather permitting, and have never tried to venture onto the road.
  2. Am I missing something here? Dog fighting is disgusting and people involved in it want shooting as far as I'm concerned, but what have the RSPCA done wrong in this article? It seems to be a fairly straight forward report?
  3. Hi There's the RSPCA who have loads of lovely cats, just Google RSPCA Sheffield and fill your boots, or http://www.wizz-catz.co.uk or catchat.org etc etc
  4. Hi I could help with the checking of traps, and/or feeding if we can get some traps in place.........but where do we get them from?
  5. Hi anna 293 Please can you tell us exactly where the farm is, I'm really worried now! Thanks
  6. The idea that a scout is going to go to the trouble of plaiting a horses mane to identify it sounds laughable to me. Isn't there just a tiny chance the owner or someone else might happen along whilst they're doing this? The string on the gate thing sounds more feasible though. That said it seems there is no gang in the area at the moment so that's good.
  7. Hi I have horses in S6, so obviously concerned and thanks for the tip off. However I don't understand what you mean about the horses 'being plaited and string tied to gates' Would you be kind enough to explain a bit more? Many thanks Newbiz
  8. Hi I got 2 nervous cats from RSPCA last March, aged 2 and 5. The 5 yr old spent about 3 weeks under a dresser upstairs, and the 2yr old spent all her time in a basket at the side of her. They only came out at night when I was in bed, and then they charged around like crazy, presumably to relieve all the tension built up during the day! I just left them to it, sat very still when they finally started to dare to come and investigate me, moved around the house as calmly and quietly as poss and made sure they had food, water and litter tray near where they were hiding. They are now both all over me like a rash, sleep on my bed, and generally follow me from room to room. Still not keen on visitors though. In short, my advice is leave them to come round in their own time, let them hide if they want and even though it feels like an age until they come to you, when you look back it wont seem long at all. Good luck
  9. Hi I'm at work so can't see the pictures (facebook is banned here!) but could he be an Australian Terrier? They look a lot like Yorkies but are a bit bigger I believe http://www.petplanet.co.uk/petplanet/breeds/Australian_Terrier.htm Have a look and see what you think. Cheers Newbiz
  10. Hi I've got 2 arabs, 1 nearly 29yrs old and a 4yr old, as well as a 12yr old ThoroughbredxWelshcob. To be fair they all seem to be doing fine in this weather (it's me that's knackered carting umpteen buckets of water down to them every day!) I'd go as far as to say they seem to prefer it to heavy rain any day of the week. When you say the arab isn't doing so well, in what way? Is he/she losing weight, looking miserable? If it's a weight thing, have you tried adding vegetable oil to the feed, it's a great way of getting cheap, easily digestible calories into them. Cheers Newbiz
  11. Since when has catnip been regarded as 'nasty' Medusa? The majority of cats love it and it is harmless as far as I'm aware.
  12. Hi. You could try those training sprays. Apparently cats hate them so spray the settee with that, and then encourage them to use the scratch posts by spraying some catnip spray on them. That's what I do with my 2, and it works as long as I remember to use the 2 sprays. That said the easiest way I've found to stop the little dears scratching the settee is to keep the door to the sitting-room shut when I'm not there!
  13. Hi. I have 3 mature apple trees that need pruning. Can anyone recommend someone, or is there anyone on this forum who would want the job? Many thanks
  14. Hi Are old duvet covers and sheets, and old horse rugs any good? The rugs are all turnout ones, which means one side is warm, and the other is (or was) waterproof. You'd probably need to cut off the buckles and fastenings. Cheers Newbiz
  15. Thanks Lexi that's a great idea...which I hadn't thought of, and the schools go back today! Cheers
  16. Due to a timewaster, I am still looking for someone. Cheers
  17. I've used Oliver Clough for about 8 or 9 yrs. Always turns up (though isn't often on time!) Kind with the horses and charges about £55 I think (not sure,as my 3 are now all barefoot, and he just trims them for me) I live at Loxley, and I think he lives near Stocksbridge His no is 07771 695948
  18. How's the little bird doing snagglepuss? I really hope he's OK and gets to fly free some time soon. Well done you for rescuing him/her!
  19. Quick update. Jen is going to come and do some riding, but has been offered a free loan of a friend's horse since responding to my thread, so will be concerntrating on that, which is a shame...........for me! So still looking for someone else (as already mentioned I have 2 other horses, and there may be opportunity to ride one or both of them at some stage, if I find the right rider) Cheers
  20. Just thought I'd mention that I'm NOT looking for any financial contribution from any would be rider. Thanks for reading. Cheers
  21. Hi I'm looking for a lightweight rider for my 28yr old Arab mare. I have stopped riding her because she is a bit arthriticky and isn't happy carrying my weight (I weigh about 9st 10lbs) so looking for either a child or v light adult. She is a lovely willing ride, goes calmly on a loose rein, and needs a calm, confident and reasonably capable rider. The emphasis for the rider is on the calm and confident, so long as you can walk and trot happily. I have had her since she was 3yrs old and know her inside out. She has the sweetest nature and has really looked after me over the years. I have bought another arab youngster, but don't want to leave her behind all the time as she would hate it, so taking her out in hand with us at the mo. If you're interested in knowing more please either pm me or reply to the thread. I'm at Loxley and she lives on the premises, so someone from that side of town would be ideal. Look forward to hearing from you.
  22. Hi Jambo That's such a strange coincidence. There was a cat looked the spit of your Tinks called Tinks in the RSPCA when I adopted mine from there in March this year. Don't give up hope though. If you look at some of the posts on here, cats seem to turn up after weeks in some cases. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Regards
  23. Is she the same Tinks that was at the RSPCA for ages, who was really scared of humans? I seriously considered her if it is, but took my 2 instead. I hope she turns up, and if she is the same cat I'm thinking of (and she sure looks the same) then she really does deserve a crack at life. Good luck
  24. Done it and passed it onto 2 other dog lovers in the office.
