  1. Attended a friend's wedding there a few years ago, and it was fantastic. You can't beat the views from there on a clear summers day. The only downside - rooms for guests staying over are very expensive. I think we ended up paying around £100 a night for a very run-of-the-mill room. If you are considering other venues just outside Sheffield, both Whitley and Wortley Hall (to the North of the city) are both pretty impressive. We got married at Wortley in 2004 and can't recommend it highly enough (and prices were pretty reasonable compared to elsewhere).
  2. I heard (but did not see) the bump as I walked down Bolsover street. It happened on the pedestrian crossing, but it wasn't clear whether the lights were on red or green at the time. I really hope this poor guy is OK. I've lost count of the number of times I've nearly been mown down by motorists accelerating off all exits of this roundabout. It would make so much sense to have a pedestrian overpass, considering this roundabout is right in the middle of the university campus and so many people have to take their lives in their hands to navigate around it every day.
  3. Can anyone recommend anywhere that's child-friendly in the S6-S10 area? We have friends visiting with kids aged 4 and 6. Pub or cheap-ish restaurant would be great, but would prefer to avoid Aunt Sallys if at all possible!
  4. Went with Utility Warehouse as they seemed to do a good value deal and were recommended by Which. Had quite e lot of problems with an unstable connection initially, but (fingers crossed) it seems to have been sorted out now... At are old hose we were with Pipex (broadband only, not phone) and they provided an excellent standard of service, but they weren't cheap.
  5. PA Jewellry on Commonside did a good job for me. Think it was around £20.
  6. I've long held the opinion that the 'advice' circulated by the government errs far too much on the side of caution, and is probably at least in part, motivated by fear of litigation by those unable to moderate themselves - "I only drank 5 bottles of wine a week instead of 10, but my baby has abnormalities - the govt said it was fine as long as I didn't drink much" etc, etc. Remember that for several centuries, it was commonplace for everyone to drink ale or, if they could afford it, wine, because it was safer than drinking polluted water, and some how, the whole of western civilisation didn't die out! Having said that, I suppose it's only natural for a woman to do all within her power to protect her unborn child - it's only a natural reaction to blame yourself if something goes wrong, so many people do their best to avoid all potential dangers. Personally, like Cyclone, I would prefer to look at the evidence and reasoning behind the official 'advice', then make an informed decision. One thing - my interpretation of the no eggs and soft cheese thing was that it was not to stop the bacteria passing into the foetus's blood stream, but to lower the risk of the mother contracting a serious GI infection, which could potentially result in sever dehydration and harm the baby - did anyone else think this or have I just made this up?
  7. kal77uk - what a narrow minded view! While I do realise that where there is a high concentration of students, there will inevitably be some (in part justified) resentment amongst the 'local' population, you should acknowledge the huge income generated by the two universities, and the graduates that love the city so much they stay on to pay taxes that feedback into local resources. If the council does not choose to spend these wisely, it's hardly the university's fault, and to suggest the the council is somehow responsible for the scale of building of university buildings and even bars is nothing short of ludicrous!
  8. Had a similar experience last week - offered only a third of the trade in price on Parkers, so left and went elsewhere.
  9. I think I hired a van from Metrow (who may also do cars) when I was around 25. They were the cheapest I could find at the time and are based just off Infirmary Road in S6. Not sure there is anywhere actually based in S10....
  10. Thanks for the info. Am thinking of going with Walkley House, as no-one has reported any problems and according to the NHS website, they seem to have longer opening hours than Tramways. The only issue is they don't seem to have an antenatal clinic, which might be an issue in the future. Does anyone know how it works when your own GP doesn't have a clinic? Can you choose one or are you automatically referred to the closest one?
  11. Came here as a postgrad student 10 years ago and never left! Have attended 3 different Unis in the course of my academic career, and it's definitely a big thumbs up for Sheffield, in terms of the university itself and the city. It's got just about everything: town and country (the peak district is on the doorstep), clubs and proper old fashioned pubs, the best students union, and being pretty much in the middle of the UK, it's easy to get to and from anywhere. The only downsides - hills if you're unfit (I was then, not now!), the standard of the roads, and too far from the coast! If you're thinking of coming here, I'd highly recommend you attend an open day at the department you're thinking of studying at and talk to current students - it's the only way of reliably deciding whether it's right for you.
  12. I've just moved into the area and need to change my GP. I think Walkley House and Tramways are closest to where I live. Before I randomly pick one, does anyone had any good/bad experiences with either of these?
  13. Not in the case of Hillsborough in December they're not - see my earlier post! The question is, where does all this post go between leaving my front door and turning up at the office 4 days later?
  14. Here's a hint - DO NOT bother turning up to collect the parcel from the local office 15 minutes before it closes on a saturday! Tried this at the Hillsborough office a couple of weeks ago, queued for ages in the pouring rain (the queue went right down the road), only to get to the front and be told 'the parcel isn't back yet' (we received the card on thursday!). Lots of other people where being told the same thing - some had been waiting for 4 days! Our parcel finally returned from the Royal Mail black hole on the following tuesday. Good luck with getting yours before Christmas!
  15. Walker down South Road around 8.45am and noticed that 52's - both First and Stagecoach - had been diverted down there.
  16. My other half was also the unlucky recipient of a £60 fine in this car park around 3 weekends ago. I was very unimpressed as the ticket was addressed to me (as the registered car owner). I think the problem is that many metered spots and car parks tend to be free on a sunday morning, which is when this ticket was issued. Obviously Somerfield don't subscribe to this ethos. Personally, I will just be taking my custom elsewhere from now on!
  17. We moved recently and after phoning around for a few quotes, ended up going with Speights. I would definitely recommend them - they turned up on time and seemed generally very professional. They charge either by the hour or do a flat day rate (it's probably best to go with the latter if you're in a chain). Good luck with your move!
  18. "My first impressions were that the city centre is not as big as Leeds' and not as many shops (though I suppose that's why Meadowhall is there)." Andy1988 - I think you mean "thats BECAUSE Meadowhall is there! Have lived in both Leeds and Sheffield - Leeds as a postgrad student for a year and Sheffield as a postgrad student and stayed on as a fully paid-up tax payer. Both are great cities for a student lifestyle, but I think Sheffield has the edge for non-students. It is friendlier and has a more community oriented feel about it (though I did live exclusively in student areas in Leeds, so maybe this isn't fair!) I think Sheffield is also greener, safer and walking up the hills is great for your fitness. The only thing Leeds has that Sheffield doesn't is really good city centre shopping.
  19. A bit of feedback - ordered from Perfect Cuisine the other night and was very impressed. Took a while to turn up (they phoned to apologise, which was unusual but much appreciated) but once the order arrived, we were very impressed with the pizzas. Was probably the closest to the 'real thing' that I've experienced outside a restaurant in the UK (and better than some restaurants too!). In fact was so nice, that I'm ashamed to say that we finished off the rest for breakfast the next day - felt almost like being students again! Thanks to previous posters for the recommendation!
  20. Have been a member of S10 since it opened, and a few quibbles aside, I do think it's good value for money. The University staff rate is something like £33 a month, no upfront joining fee as far as I know, and that gives you unlimited access to the gym (which is large and spacious), most classes and the swimming pool, sauna and steam room (which are usually broken!). Might be a few pounds more for people with no association with the University, but I think it still compares well with the commercial outfits. I normally go at around 5.30pm, which can be quite busy, but nowhere near as bad as other places I've been. The reason for this is that students are offered a discounted off peak fee, which means they can't use the facilities after 5pm on weekdays. My main criticism is that the opening hours outside term time are sometimes quite restrictive (over Christmas for example) and they close at 5pm on weekends, which seems a bit early. All in all, I would definitely recommend that you go and have a look around and se what you think.
  21. I see your point, but this probably comes under the category of poor quality/lack of fresh ingredients rather than taking the basic idea of the dish and turning into something completely unrecognisable. The best place to eat fish and chips is most definitely out of newspaper at the seaside, but failing that, Broomhead chippy and Bole Hill Chippy, both in Crookes, do a pretty good attempt.
  22. Couldn't agree more. Went to Italy on holiday this year, and even in the expensive touristy places like Venice you can get pizzas which are far better than the poor attempts that are served up here, and you don't have to go far from the beaten track to get decent prices too. Then there's the wine. And the ice cream.... but I digress! I suppose there must be a market for the greasy, plastic cheese rubbish, the same as there is for the offensively red muck that passes for Indian food. Thank God for fish and chips - there's not a great deal that can be done to bastardise this (I stand to be proved wrong....!)
  23. A pizza stone - that's an interesting thought - any idea where I could get one? Not very useful when you're feeling peckish on the way home from the pub, but it might come in useful on other occassions! Is Vittels the little cafe in Broomhill on the corner that only opens during the day?
  24. This isn't so much going out as staying in, but here goes... Have recently moved to S6 and am trying to find a good pizza takeaway. The problem is that I'm really fussy about pizza. I love the Italian thin-based ones that tend not to be swimming in grease and cheese (controversial, I know) - like the ones Pizza Express do. Any suggestions?
