  1. Went into Halifax recently to try and open a bank account for my daughter, which you can't do online. Took all the necessary documents with us, only to be told they couldn't do it as we hadn't made an appointment in advance. They were fully booked and unable to offer us an appointment at any suitable time in the near future (most were within school hours) so I have now given up.

So much for teaching my child financial independence and responsibility. Clearly there is a demand for services that are only offered in the person, and I can't see how closing the largest branch in the city is going to be meeting this demand.

Broomhill could do with a decent curry house although to be fair they aren't many decent places in Sheffield anymore. Would be nice to have a few quality ales in Itchy Pig and then stroll across the road for a top notch curry...

At the minute our go to place is Cafe Indus on London Road.

Apparently Cutlers up near Gleadless Town End is closing too...

Have you tried Bambukat, just over the road from Balti King? Sells its wares as "Indian Street food" rather than the standard menu list of korma, madras etc but have had some delicious curries from there.

I am sure I read that to get to Manchester airport by National Express you have to change at Leeds.

Yes, this is the case, as I have just discovered while trying to plan travel to account for train strikes this week.  Actually couldn't believe it until I looked at several different websites that all told me the same thing.

Two major northern cities 40 miles apart and no direct bus or coach route between them . So much for "levelling up"!

I see that Ponds Forge gym, and all the Sheffield City Trust gyms, are now using a booking system where you must book in advance before going to the gym. Does anyone know if this is a permanent feature, or is it in place temporarily because of covid?

You no longer need to pre-book at the STC gyms - just turn up whenever. Not sure about swimming though.

He has a fantastic stall, perhaps not the cheapest but the best quality I've ever had and he'll often let you try first before buying.  His seafood salad is excellent too. I wonder if he's still there, since Covid will have been a threat to many businesses.

Have been back recently,  but sadly it looks like the stall has gone 😢

  6. Pre- booked with City App last night as we had the chance of a rare night out and wanted to be on time for a restaurant reservation.  Ten minutes after the time I had booked for, the app was still apparently "looking for a driver". Gave up and eventually got an uber after 3 attempts with the app.

Is pre-booking not actually a thing any more? Was I naive to think that by requesting a taxi 2 hours in advance,  it might actually turn up roughly when I wanted it? If I had phoned 2 hours in advance instead,  would that have been any different? What about if I had been trying to get to the train station or to the hospital? Strikes me as being a pretty poor way of running a service!

I've only just come across this thread (if you can call it a thread as no-one has replied to it until now). I hope they make it an annual event from now on: it certainly seemed quite popular especially with families with kids.

At first I thought the idea was to try to visit as many of the signing on points across the city as possible, but I think the idea was just to get people to take more exercise by walking and cycling more.

Yes, the idea was to accumulate as many miles as possible,  rather than visiting as many different boxes ( though you could of course,  do both!).

I thought this was a great initiative and lived the competitive element- my kids' school won a prize to spend on PE equipment that they otherwise probably couldn't afford. Really hope it comes back again at some point!

The place in the market is great,  he has a large selection of foods to buy and he's a nice guy too.  When I go I can easily spend £15 on nibbles, but they are delicious 😋.

Is he definitely still there? Couldn't find the stall when I last ventured down there a few weeks ago. Has it moved, maybe?

In the end we rehomed a cockapoo.  She had only been with her first owner for 2 weeks!

I was gobsmacked by the sheer greed of unscrupulous breeders as the prices rocketed to more than 3x the prices that we started our search and wasn't prepared to help them line their pockets.

I figured that there would be countless young dogs in need of forever homes once some of new owners realised how much work puppies require...and I wasn't wrong.

Aged just 12 weeks, we took in our little miss and she's 9 months old now.  Everything happens for a reason 🥰

Hi Hayley, I was wondering how you arranged this?

We are looking for a poodle crossbreed  and would certainly consider the rehomng option.  However have not seen any up for rehoming through the standard routes (all seem to be Staffys and the like!).

Any info would be gratefully received!

The near-misses I've seen seem to involve vehicles travelling from Bowshaw on Chesterfield Road South up to the roundabout, and turning first left on to Greenhill Main Road.

No sooner have they done so, those wishing to take the next right on to Greenhill Avenue have to veer across from the inside lane to the outer...and that's where I've spotted most of the problems - if that lane's already full and stationary because of the approaching traffic stemming from Greenhill Parkway....

Agreed. I sometimes take this route and this particular manouevre is a nightmare when it's busy.

    It does make you wonder,

"SAGE used data from WIKIPEDIA to model Covid crisis in spring, did not have a single coronavirus expert in its ranks, and wrongly predicted virus would peak in June rather than April, damning BBC documentary reveals"

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html

Where on earth would they have found an "expert " on a disease that had only been in existence for 3 months?

Scientific expertise is built through study and analysis of data and data takes time to collect and process.

  12. It's very worrying times for the aquatics clubs that are reliant on the specialist facilities there and have nowhere else to train. Current word is it will remain closed until at least April,  by which time it will be too late. Such a shame for the world class and up and coming athletes who train there  as well as the coaches that support them.

Bad reporting by The Star the lease for the pub is available so to say it's closing is a bad headline.

Think it was an old thread that was revived. Perhaps mods could change the title before the pub loses anymore custom?
