  1. So - do we just conveniently ignore this and pretend the 15% increase in immigration over the last 20 years has no impact on the housing market? Net migration has been the main driver of population change since the 1990s. In 2022, it stood at 672,000. ONS currently projects that, based on current trends, net migration could account for 90% of population increase in the UK over the next decade. I also refer to a point I made another thread re. Doctors. Whilst it is all fine and dandy to have overseas doctors working here, should we not give some consideration to the medical services in their home countries if a significant proportion leave to work abroad? And we doing this because, perchance, it’s cheaper than training our own doctors? Immigration is neither all good nor all bad. The sooner people realise that being a virtue signalling, blinkered ‘all immigration is wonderful’ type is as bad as being a xenophobic, rascist bigot the better.
  2. The cost is the reason. What is mentioned less often is the effect of overseas born doctors leaving their home countries, that educated them, loosing their own doctors to work overseas.
  3. It looked fairly new, that’s why I noticed it!!
  4. Well there are plenty of idiot dog owners that can’t control their dogs so maybe that is what it’s for.
  5. Is it legal to have a sign saying ‘Trespassers Will Be Shot’ on private land? I saw one in Derbyshire this week
  6. You may say that but in reality would people use a Drive Thru in Graves Park? They would, wouldn’t they?
  7. McDonald’s is not classy anyway. Dunkin’ Donuts is more upmarket and will attract a better class of customer. They can build a Drive Thru no problem.
  8. I think don’t doubt there is a small minority than attempt feigning medical conditions to avoid working. Seriously though, do you think significant numbers do this? And get away with it? And want to do it for paltry benefits to avoid working? Anyway I couldn’t care less about a few malingers claiming benefits compared to corporate corruption. Mental illness used to carry a huge stigma. There is much less stigma now.
  9. Well, I don’t. Genuinely disabled people have to jump through (metaphorical) hoops to get paltry benefits. If anyone thinks it’s a top idea to try it on to get these benefits because they are too lazy to work, I’d argue they must have a delusional mental illness it’s so bonkers!
  10. No way! Well I was being totally serious. Dunkin’ Donuts would be massive in Graves Park! Maybe the park goers would be too with all those Donuts but maybe they could sponsor the Parkrun to burn off those calories. The DonutRun maybe. But yes, KFC would be a good tie in with the animal farm.
  11. There’s no way it would attract gangs of bored teenagers and chavs with the associated anti social behaviour is there though? And there’s no way there would be McDonalds litter floating all around the park. Definitely not. And ditto Dunkin’ Donuts.
  12. So they were sending small children up chimneys in the 1960’s? Do you reckon we should go back to the good old days and bring it back? Maybe along with workhouses to deter the undeserving poor from malingering.
  13. I hope you know that many residents of this area call it Parsons Cross.
  14. Urgh, breakfast wraps are the work of the devil. Yuk. If you want a hot breakfast sandwich, do it properly and go to a sandwich shop for a bacon butty. But for the in-park, corporate multinational experience grab a coffee and donut for breakfast at Dunkin’ Donuts. The do croissants too. In the US they also have a full breakfast menu. Breaking into the UK public park market they could develop their brand over here to offer an extended breakfast experience. https://bakedideas.com/dunkin-donuts-breakfast-menu-hours/#:~:text=Dunkin' Donuts proudly serves their, you can enjoy it anytime!
  15. Absolutely. The presence of spice zombies laid out on the beautiful paving covered in vomit, empty Special Brew cans amongst the beautifully curated flowers in the planters and the Bankers Draft regulars swearing and cursing whilst sitting on the tastefully designed benches and asking passers by for spare change. It really makes all the difference doesn’t when it comes to getting new High Street brands into Sheffield. Smooth low quality paving though will most definitely put them off.
  16. There were some selling knock off cigarettes and vodka the other week out of Poundland carrier bags.
  17. Ah, the old ‘deserving’ and ‘undeserving’ poor. Do you think there are significant numbers of people that just think ‘nah, I can’t be bothered working, I’ll just pretend I’ve got a mental illness’. Really?
  18. Well I do agree that there is too much medicalisation of certain issues. I don’t want to offend and belittle anyone with genuinely debilitating medical issues but there are certainly instances of medicalisation doing far more harm than good. Punishing people for not working isn’t the answer though.
  19. ‘In September of 1875, a bill was pushed through which put a stop to the practice of using children as chimney sweeps. Joseph Glass, an engineer from Bristol, England, invented the original brushes and rods used to clean chimneys; the design is still used today’. https://www.chimneysolutions.com/blog/child-chimney-sweeps/#:~:text=In September of 1875%2C a,design is still used today. Was it still going on in the 1960’s then?
  20. No idea. It’s a council property and they are responsible for repairs to an unsafe staircase. It’s not a cosmetic problem, they are unsafe.
  21. Aye, but I wasn’t replying to you and didn’t disagree with what you said. I was replying to the person that said it was due to tenant negligence and all it needed was a good clean and a lick of paint.
  22. I agree to some extent that work is good for mental and physical health. Surely it doesn’t take a degree in medicine to work out that there are some unfortunate people out that that are too incapacitated to work? Also, do you actually believe someone might think ‘hmm, I’m feeling a bit down in the dumps and I can’t be bothered to work anymore, I’ll get signed off work’. Then they rock up at the GP who agrees they are unable to work and they can therefore live out their existence on benefits. Really? Would this problem not perhaps have something to do with an under funded mental health service? And perhaps to insecure, poorly paid employment? Now if you say, ‘well that’s their fault for not being able to get a better job’, I say then who cleans toilets, delivers takeaways and parcels, cares for the elderly and disabled etc? Are they sub human, and not worthy of proper pay and conditions? Do they deserve to be treated to be contempt? Or do we now live in world where no one needs to do these jobs and everyone can be a highly paid entrepreneur or professional?
  23. And, I should also mention that the article states this lady had medical conditions. This may make cleaning and maintaining the house more difficult.
  24. With respect, I don’t think that applies to the unsafe staircase. Do staircases frequently fall into disrepair through tenant negligence? I think not. She hasn’t wilfully damaged that staircase and you don’t maintain a staircase with ‘a luck if paint and a good clean’. I read some of the reader comments on this article and they were also rather judgmental. One suggested she should get the stairs carpeted. As if covering up the damaged stairs will make them safe . There is absolutely no point painting and carpeting parts of house in need of repair to make them look nicer. It will only need re-doing following repair and if anything it give the council excuses that it ‘looks OK’ and is not urgent!!!
