  1. Saying that Screwfix is the same as B&Q because they have the same parent company, is a bit of a stretch to be honest, although there are inevitably some overlaps with product ranges. Toolstation share the same parent company as Wickes, but to say they are the same would be barmy. And to add, the founder of Screwfix was also the founder of Toolstation.... but these also have marked differences. .
  2. Thanks for the update on Melvin. My wife was also a dancer on the 'go-go' circuit, which was another reason why I posted about him. I guess you may have known one another......... .
  3. I seem to recall that someone once mentioned Symphony Kitchens. Take a look HERE .
  4. It amazes me what a difference school holidays can make. For me, a 45 minute drive during the rush hour is reduced to around 15 minutes during school holidays. .
  5. Its still there, although I'm not sure what they make these days. A short while ago, we were working on the house next door (on Pritchard Pl). I had no idea what the place was at the time but was intrigued by the (apparently discarded) oil drums full of sea shells that were there. .
  6. There was indeed. Does this help? Link .
  7. Sound resonates in lots of different ways and mainly from hard surfaces. Whilst a solid door may help, it wouldn't eliminate it. Soft furnishings such as heavy curtains, carpets and underlays would have more effect. When its feasible, insulation under floors, blue soundproofing plasterboards to ceilings etc but clearly not a very viable solution unless the property was being refurbished or newly built. .
  8. In the meantime, take a look at Bald eagle chicks in Washington DC American Eagle Foundation .
  9. Thanks to my musician father's tireless and much too optimistic efforts, the ability to read and play (badly), music. In my younger days it provided a much welcome part time income and now I'm older it provides food for the soul. .
  10. Yep... in '69...can't recall the name, but it was at the bottom of Staniforth Rd. Three courses for 5 bob, choice of about three main dishes I think. .
  11. Yes, mix it well otherwise the bottom of the tub may be a different shade. Make sure that you have enough to finish the job as the next mix may differ. .
  12. The instrument you describe is the subcontrabass sax. The double Bb contrabass sax is tuned an octave below the bass sax..... where the subcontrabass sits, I'm not sure. I think in some ways that it kind of mimics a bowed double bass (and is probably as portable). Bye the way, if anyone fancies a bit of jazz guitar, Frank Vignola and Vinni Raviolo are at the greystones on March 29th. .
  13. I had reason to call at a few houses on these few streets around 1970 ish. There was a drop hammer forge close by (Daniel Doncasters ?). When the hammer was operating, you could hear the racket and the vibration would shake the houses. How people lived like this, I have no idea, it must have been very stressful. .
  14. Wasn't this club called something like the 'Scala' club.... many moons ago? .
  15. I'd forgotten all about these. In the late 50's, on our walk back from the shops, my grandmother would often stop for a chat with her friend who lived there. This lady had a son with Downs syndrome whom I seem to remember was quite a talented wood-worker. .
  16. I reckon that you are bang on the button. Apparently Sheffield Archives hold the library's annual reports, dated between '71 and '96 .
  17. Prime Minister: "Sir Humphrey...sorry Jeremy... the OUT campaign appears to be doing well, is there anything we can do do make them look a bit silly?" Sir Humphrey (sorry... Jeremy): " Hmmm...haha...Yes Prime Minister" .
  18. Fascinating stuff. Who would have thought this little alley would have incorporated nine houses. Using 'Hillsboro's map' and the satellite image, here is the location and roughly how the nine houses were situated: Sheaf Ave Edit... twelve houses then.....just noticed no's 12,14 and 16 at the bottom of the map. I wonder if there was another point of access rather than just the paths at the side of no's 2 & 10 .
  19. These work incredibly well in houses with a loft as that is where they are fitted. The same company supply a different version for flats, but are quite expensive to install because to be done correctly, they need to be ducted into each room. Condensation/ mould issues can be resolved by keeping the property heated and ventilated, although I appreciate the cost of doing so. There are numerous changes that you can make that don't cost anything and these are outlined in a free fact sheet that I am happy to provide if you follow the link below. .
  20. Its a good question. If it is someone I know personally, I don't suppose it is much different. If it is someone whom I only know via my screen, I find the written word easier. More time to think about what one is going to say. I always try to make sure that I word it so that the context is understood. Sometimes the context can trip you up. .
  21. On the subject of cavity wall insulation, ask any builder who has had occasion to carry out work where it is possible to see inside the cavity and I guess they will all have had the same experience as me. The insulation is often, practically none existent. .
  22. I buy socks by the dozen pairs, all the same. Pairing is doddle. .
  23. I don't know of any 'dip' unfortunately, but some elbow grease and some 000 grade steel wool does it. .
  24. I had exactly the same call, must be getting on for 10 yrs ago. He put the phone down on me when I started asking him more about how he was connected to the police. I had nothing but trouble with scam calls when I used to have an ad in Yellow Pages. They stopped when I pulled the ad. Now I just have to deal with about 60 spam emails a day edit........See what I mean link .
  25. He duped me on West St during the summer. He said his car had broken down and was 80p short in change for the meter and was trying to avoid a parking ticket. I was a bit slow on the uptake. .
