  1. Hi, cats are obligate carnivores and have no real need for vegetables such as peas and carrots or large amounts of grains and carbs. As another poster mentioned, it is fine to feed your cats chicken but you must make sure they have a source of the essential amino acid taurine. Cooked chicken breast will have relatively little taurine compared to raw prawns, for example. There is some more information here: http://www.vetlord.org/taurine-is-essential-for-cats/ or on Google.
  2. My scone recipe is very similar to those already posted, so I won't bother with that but here are some tips ... add a couple drops of lemon juice to the milk to sour it a little and lighten the mix (if your milk is fresh). when adding the wet ingredients, mix until just just combined then turn out onto the side, fold over three times and pat out -lightly- to correct thickness. No rolling pins go near my scones. Use your cutter decisively, straight in and out, no twisting. Don't forget the egg wash, but careful not to get it down the sides as it can stop the scones rising. I find cooking smaller scones over a shorter time (10-12mins) works better in my oven, so play around with that too. What a shame I then have to eat twice as many
  3. I am fortunate to have never needed their services, but I walk past Your Good Mourning in Walkley who opened in the past few months. http://www.sheffieldhelpyourself.org.uk/full_search_new.asp?group=26070
  4. Thank you for posting the pic. Does Oscar normally like to sit on his own windowsill/around his house? As he looks like a tabby that lives near to me. I will keep my eyes peeled for you when I'm out and about.
  5. My cat was a housecat before I got her, and I feel the same as you. I have had her for about a year now and it is only in the past week that she has started to go outside by herself and explore the garden for 5-10mins at a time. If anything spooks her she's straight back in, but it's a start and lovely to see I just leave the door open whenever it isn't too cold or raining, and make sure she sees me do things outside. I have left the pace up to my cat as obviously the outside world takes a lot of getting used to and she came to us as a very timid thing.
  6. I have always been my own person, which I suppose comes under 'alternative'. I was not bullied at school although I was not in the cool/popular scene. Personally, I have an attitude of 'F what everyone thinks' and also, everyone has the right to like whatever they want. For a time I attended an all-girls private school. Wow, that was a bitch-fest. I was pleasant to everyone even if we weren't on the same wavelength and they were nice enough back. My abrasive best friend was not so lucky. My OH attended a rougher school than me. From what I understand, he adapted a similar ploy of keeping his head down and being the person that says hello and lets everyone get on with their own thing. He mostly got through unscathed. It's not about being weak or whatever, these kinds of arguments are pointless IMO. People are what they are, and I will do what I want with people I like and if people mock me for that well sod 'em.
  7. You could try putting baking soda on for 2 hours and then brushing off and putting through wash again. This knowledge gleaned from ehow.com, no idea if it will work but worth a shot.
  8. This expands on NDM-1. Scary, really. http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2011/04/ndm-1-water/
  9. Have you been drinking enough? I felt rubbish all morning, then OH woke up and told me get some water down because I was sweating all night ..
  10. As I understand it purple is red-based, so treat it the same way as you would red hair.
  11. Immunisation is a consequence of vaccination. As for getting rid of a virus entirely, it's something great to strive for but almost impossible in the real world when you take into account the huge numbers of strays etc (worldwide) who would have to be hunted down. If I'm remembering correctly, so far we have only managed to eradicate two diseases (smallpox and rinderpest) thanks to huge efforts by the WHO. Also, viruses that mutate quickly - like flu- I don't think will be eradicated any time soon with our current knowledge.
  12. If you know where they live, perhaps you could pop a card through the door.
  13. Thanks all ... Your replies have made me feel a lot less guilty for considering this! I really like the idea of going down to the cat shelter and talking to them and scoping out the cats that they have in. Groovemaster, great photo - beautiful kitties Going to have a read through your thread now. And poohbear, thanks for offer but due to OH's allergy issues we will want a young cat that is out of kittenhood if we go ahead.
  14. Hello, I don't post very often but I am after some help and advice. I have been thinking that I would like to add a second cat to our household. I have spoken to OH, and whilst he did not dismiss the idea out of hand (who am I kidding, I wear the trousers ) he does want reassuring about how our cat Tygra will cope. Tygra is about 10yrs and we have had her for only one - she is my first cat. She is very timid and not a typical playful, inquisitive cat. For instance, we have a room full of small animals that we can leave the door open to and she won't enter (we do close the door when no-one is in the house!). She is more like a lap dog, really. Now, this is where I am stuck - Is it better to keep Tygra alone? I think she seems quite content with a quiet and laidback lifestyle and another cat would completely upset that. But sometimes, when I see her putting one paw out of the backdoor and then dashing back in, I wonder if maybe a more confident cat may actually help her? It can't be much fun being so scared of the unknown (outside, noises, certain movements, strangers) and isn't she bored? Also, selfishly and honestly, I would like to have a more 'catty' cat - although I love Tygs to bits and would never do anything to her detriment. I don't know if Tygra has lived with other cats before - will she be really protective of the house? If we decided to go ahead, would male or female be best? My OH is apparently allergic to kittens (is this possible?) so we would be looking at about a year old+. Thanks in advance if you can offer any thoughts, advice, experiences.
  15. My hamster sometimes squeaks when she wants something/is frustrated (eg can't get her ball through a small gap!). The clicking could be a respiratory infection so I'd suggest seeing a vet.
