Sheffield collectors wanted for 2011 Poppy Appeal
thesofa replied to Frazer1974's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
I have bought and worn my poppy with pride for 50 years, as soon as I was old enough to understand what it meant. It never occurred to me that, as a civilian, I could help to sell them too. I was excited by your post, and looking forward to working with you. Then I saw your sig line. Is your view about religion a personal one, or representative of the Legion? Either way, I found it deeply offensive. -

They were down to a few cartons of milk at lunchtime, I would assume none by now. -

Anyone know anything about the Nether Edge Christmas Market, supposed to be on this Sunday? -
Castle market traders complain about German market
thesofa replied to Rioja's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
No. The Continental markets were already well established at that time, and are not monthly as you suggest. The German market 2 years ago was a village set-up of semi-permanent wooden chalets. It opened soon after Remembrance Day, and went on until Christmas. Some of the stalwarts of the Continental market were there, it's true, but with some faces I haven't seen since. I was expecting something similar, but this seems to be more of a public drinking garden for the evenings. More information on the ongoing Continental markets is here: http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/business-economy/markets/farmers-and-specialist-markets -
Castle market traders complain about German market
thesofa replied to Rioja's topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
I went at lunchtime today and it was beyond sad. Some cheap pick and mix sweets, a manky looking beer garden, a couple of bratwurst stands and two crystal gift stalls. Oh, and a creperie. Even the banners around it all looked grubby. Based on the one 2 years ago on Barker's Pool, I was expecting cooked meat, cheese, german and dutch biscuits and cakes - a cheerful atmosphere, wonderful smells ... Sometimes I'm just ashamed to live in Sheffield. -
Unfortunately today, when it's supposed to be open, it's all fenced off with a couple of blokes wandering about inside stapling up the odd decoration. No signage to say what it is, when it'll be open ...

Oh poo, do we know why it's been cancelled?

I was thinking about wandering up to the Tunisian market on Fargate at lunchtime today, has anybody been? Is it any good? Don't want to waste my lunch-hour if it's pants.

We've had a notice going round the office that the Furnival Square roundabout "realignment" work is starting on 1st October. Sorry if this has been discussed before! Does anyone know what that's actually going to mean?

Hiya, I'm in a discussion elsewhere that is talking about locations and settings for books and films, and I was wondering what people knew about books / films / TV set or filmed in Sheffield, especially if it's science fiction. We've mentioned Threads and Last Train and Full Monty, what else do people remember? And is there anyone here who had a bit part in Threads?
