  1. The beautiful flowers really brighten up the area. Well done to all the hard-working volunteers - very glad that you won the award.
  2. Try the Sheffield round walk, or parts of it... http://www.sheffieldroundwalk.co.uk/maps.htm
  3. Because Tony Blair had (and still has) every appearance of being a Tory. Well spoken, public school educated, went to war over oil, taken up lucrative directorships, lives in Cadogan Square, nice house in the country too.....so he didn't frighten the middle classes!
  4. Information about the constituency can be found here: http://ukpolitics.telegraph.co.uk/Sheffield+Brightside+%26+Hillsborough The most striking thing is the turnout. It's a shade under 50%. There could still be a lot of votes for the taking. The inclusion of Hillsborough is likely to cause a swing to the Lib Dems going on recent local election results. If the Lib Dems had stood an effective candidate who showed even a vague inclination to connect with the voters and who would take advantage with the growing disillusionment with the Labour government then there could have been a significant swing. An opportunity may have been lost. Candidate apathy = voter apathy.
  5. Well I still haven't had any flyers/leaflets from the national Lib Dem candidate despite having received them from the Conservatives, UKIP, Labour and the TUC socialists. Despite coming 2nd in Brightside last time and the Lib Dems having a reasonable following in Hillsborough, it seems like the prospective Lib Dem MP can't be bothered. And if he can't even work out where his meetings/hustings are taking place then I despair. I can only wish that one of our Lib Dem local councillors stands for the national elections next time, and that may be relatively soon given the present predictions for a hung parliament, because at least they're dedicated and have reasonable organisational skills (leaflets HAVE been recieved in this case). The council candidate, Karen, will get my vote but the mysterious national candidate has lost it.
  6. Yes, you are right there's an article about it here. It's all very odd! http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article708341.ece
  7. My favourite (being my local MP) is David Blunkett who has a second home near Chatsworth rather in his actual constituency, Brightside/Hillsborough. Considering MPs only have second homes so they can do their constituency work, I think this is ludicrous. He holds surgeries in the constituency for a mere 1.5 hours once a month. Red rosettes and donkeys spring to mind.
  8. The smell could be the result of one of Mandy's nastier smear campaigns!
  9. Very funny....Cameron is a con-man with a nasty streak so you don't like him but you'd advocate putting Mandelson forward as a good prime-ministerial candidate!!!???? Mandy is a proven con-man and I certainly wouldn't want to get in a fight with him. Scary, very scary. You're right though....comparing Labour and the Tories is like comparing apples and pears. We know that one box has several thoroughly rotten apples in it but the we haven't actually taken the lid of the box of pears to see what lurks inside.
  10. At a time when so many families struggle to pay their council tax, I can't find any sympathy for the council workers. This article ought to make people think about the true victims of the recession: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/7190515/Struggling-families-facing-the-bailiffs-over-unpaid-council-tax.html
  11. In fact, if the council's stock levels of paint are as inadequate as their stocks of salt, they'll have run out by the time they've finished the residents parking bays.
  12. Given the freeze-thaw conditions of the last few weeks, they'll have their work cut out filling up the potholes/cracks in the roads prior to any line-painting otherwise they are going to be rather incomplete or wonky. Just an observation and absolutely no help in answering the question...
  13. 270,000 children will get £300,000,000 of laptops/broadband. That means that over £1,100 will be spent per laptop + 1 year's broadband. How much money is being wasted on administration? I'd expect to get a discount on such bulk-buy and the average laptop doesn't cost £1000 nowadays. If the govenment really wanted to help poor children become computer literate surely they'd just post out a £500 voucher for PC world to over 500,000 families? That would be open to misuse? A bit like the current scheme? Why not upgrade school facilities and make them accessible in the evenings and provide specialist help thus reducing misuse of computers and actually teaching the kids something? I've nothing against education, improving the prospects of the least well off but I hate the government squandering money (which we don't have) left, right and centre.
  14. Our street is in it. I was initially annoyed but as a committed user of public transport in a household which uses its one car approximately once a week and where both of us work, the £10 charge isn't that bad and our car tends to be legally parked up 99.9% of the time despite the parking problems (24/7 - day, night and weekend commuters?). Of course, our neighbours who use their cars several times a day will probably find it more difficult to find a space what with the bays and extra double lines but our car will be sitting pretty. If we ever find it difficult to find a space then we will drive around and around until we find one. This is bad for the environment but will save us from paying a £35 fine. 53% of people wanted a scheme of some sort. Fine. I'll go along with that. But as the saying goes "be careful what you wish for!".
  15. Think of the boost to the economy from increased on-line bingo revenues....
