  1. Well the ceremony was last night. David Blunkett was late so I didn`t get to shake hands. I got flowers,a certificate and an engraved clock. Disappointed that my name was misspelled on clock and framed certificate but there you go. They did give me a second certificate but the frame is sealed so I can`t just replace it.
  2. I saw something similar while waiting for a bus. I too didn`t know what to do at the time. If I saw same again I would take car reg no and ring police. Its not snitching, its caring about the safety of the children and if the mother or whoever won`t take responsibility then they deserve to be reported.
  3. Intolerance in all its forms. Too many people seem to be bullying others. Fat against thin, smokers and anti smokers, meat eaters and veggies, the list is endless. There is little empathy shown these days.
  4. Thanks for your advice. I confess I was worrying about it, the whole thing really. I`m not keen on being centre of attention. While it`s nice that my voluntary work is appreciated I prefer to remain in the background. My immediate reaction on getting the letter about it was I can`t do this but my sister said I must go if she has to drag me there!
  5. I am to receive an award next week. Present, among others, will be Lord Mayor, Richard Caborn and David Blunkett. I am worried about shaking hands with Mr Blunkett. Does anyone know if this is required and how does it work, given that he can`t see an outstretched hand?
  6. Everyone, staff and pupils at Whiteways junior school, the happiest school in Sheffield
  7. Thanks for your replies, I think its time to buy a new washer
  8. This will sound like a daft question but can you get an electric shock from a washing machine that is not plugged in? An engineer in my home has just claimed this happened. He had unplugged the machine, then when he touched the washer he jumped and was rubbing his hand for some time afterwards. There was no sign of a burn or anything. He didn`t make any fuss about it to me so I am left wondering. He didn`t charge anything for coming either when he said my machine could not be fixed.
  9. Tried Alan on 0796 3286513. he wouldn`t even let me tell him the job I wanted doing, simply said I don`t do handyman work anymore. So any other recommended electricians please, for a small job (broken light fitting)
  10. Wow thats amazing, I had no idea about this site. It is indeed our house two down from the pawnbroker. It`s very sad to see though. One funny thing I will never forget. The landlords were going to instal bathrooms on the top floor, but only got as far as painting the word `bathroom` on the door. I was recently told that the cellars all interconnected, an escape route if the house was bombed but I don`t remember any way through to next door.
  11. Thanks Tuppie and Hutch, that was amazingly quick The name Jowett certainly rings a bell We lived at number 45 I remember playing marbles in the cobbled street outside his shop.
  12. Does anyone remember the name of the pawnbroker on Lansdowne Rd in the 1950`s. We lived in the yard next door and I seem to remember a very unpleasant old man, ( but perhaps he just didn`t like kids) The shop was very dark with creaky wooden floors
  13. A4MAHMOOD We have a lousy unreliable bus service, and when it is important I prefer not to have to rely on them
  14. Sheffield 4 (near Firvale) to be in city centre for 9.30
  15. Can anyone recommend a taxi firm that doesn`t do school runs. I need a taxi for about 9.15 am, and past experience has shown that so many are unavailable due to school runs. Thanks
  16. I started at Grange Grammar in 1958 but because we knew we were moving to Derbyshire I was allowed to not wear uniform. On the school photo I stand out being the only girl in a kilt instead of uniform. Three years later we were back in Sheffield and I returned to GG which was far better than the horrible snobby Lady Manners School in Bakewell, where I was bullied by kids and teachers. Ruined my education having to go there.
  17. I believe there is a connection from way back in the 16th century but not certain. I visited Revell Grange a few years ago when it was for sale. My ancestors were obsessed with the claim I mentioned but in truth there was never any prospect of success. The estates passed out of Revell hands through female marriages when there was no male heir. I am hoping descendents of some of the families mentioned, Brown Jenkin or any one else may have more information
  18. We have no service after 6pm let alone late at night, and we aren`t exactly far out of town (about 2 miles)
  19. Researching my family history, I have many letters about my family`s claim to Ogston Hall and Carnfield Hall in Derbyshire, both homes of the Revell family. My grandfather William Evans Jenkin and his cousin John Revell Jenkin wrote to each other at length, and even got as far as preparing to go to court. Another branch of the family also went to court in 1876, this was Henry Brown who lived in Broomspring Lane. Are there any Browns Jenkins or anyone else who has any further information on this?
  20. I have lived in this area for 20 plus years and have had no problems. I once remonstrated with a man who threw his sandwich wrapper down. He turned round, walked toward me, and I thought oh what have I done? With a sheepish smile he picked up the wrapper and put it in his pocket. I give everyone I meet a smile and most people smile back. Wherever you live there will be some people you wouldn`t want as a neighbour.
  21. Oh yes I remember him, the tiny shop was up some steep stone stairs and there was a lovely smell of leather. He was always very polite,
  22. I recall seeing on the path to St Nicholas Church there is a gravestone with the inscription `sacred to the memory of ... (can`t remember the name) who died` There is no more so it`s intriguing to wonder why the inscription is incomplete I certainly hope everyone buried there died!
  23. Does anyone remember a major fire on the Moor on or around Bonfire Night in the early fifties. This forum is my last hope to decide if it really happened or I dreamed it, as nobody I have spoken to can recall it. What I can see in my mind is crowds of people lining the Moor and a policeman or fireman wheeling out a rail of dresses from Neales Gowns. Someone is saying that a rocket had landed in a pile of tyres behind the shops and started the fire, and that appliances had been sent from Manchester and other places. I have tried checking newspapers but without a date it is difficult.
  24. I was told my grandfather was an air raid warden. In Dec 1940 he directed a group of people to an air raid shelter, which subsequently received a direct hit and everyone was killed. My grandfather was wracked with guilt for the rest of his life. This would have been in the Moor/Lansdowne Rd area probably. I have been unable to find confirmation of this in any publication so if anyone knows anything I would love to hear more.
  25. I have lived in Grimesthorpe about 20 years and am a governor at Whiteways School which is how I came across the logbooks. I have read them all through and they provide an amazing picture of life in the area, not just at the school. Its just a shame that some logbooks are missing, particularly the war years.
