  1. You can buy a ticket on Northern from the guard however as stated in the thread if it is at a station that can except a cash payment then the passenger should by from there. I fail to understand why people don't get this, its been the rule for decades. If the ticket office is open then the guard can charge you full if they wish. If the ticket office is closed or there isn't one (most of Northern stations) then the full range of tickets can be offered. Most guards will sell you full range regardless but I have seen it enforced numerous times. My journey most weeks is Chapeltown to Leeds changing on to the fast train at Barnsley. Twice now the guard on both services has not come round and when I get to Leeds the mobile ticket office on the bridge is closed. On explaining this to the barrier staff they look at you but then ask your journey. I tell them and as its a genuine journey they recognise they let me through the barrier so I only pay for a single on my return journey. I always have the fare ready but sometimes they guard doesn't bother.
  2. Day return is £5 or £6 last time i went in summer. Most likely single will be £3.50. 272 Day return is also valid on the train as well.
  3. Surely any Supertram or tram train extension will be if and when any more capactity on the existing rail lines is found. I understand currently Sheffield Midland station is at full capacity as is the northern routes from Meadowhalll to Sheffield Midland and like wise I understood the line south from Midland Station to Dore curve is running at full capacity. The existing rail network will not shrink as HS2 is about growth so how can the tram train run to Dore etc on the current tracks? You'd need a new track/s but is there the room within the existing rail corridor land?
  4. Very true. Its also following the former rail line from Meadowhall to Hoyland area so like back in the late 1800's Ecclesfield and Chapeltown (via Cowley Hill) will have two rail lines running within spiting distance of each other. HS2 to Leeds and the current Leeds and Huddersfield line via Barnsley.
  5. I understand services are run commercially with no funding. Stagecoach have taken a decision to try it and accept the financial risk The first night bus run in the region by them was the N66 Barnsley to Elsecar service and is still runnig so must work. Their reasoning I think is that any night bus should follow the daytime service on regular headways for potential passengers to quickly grasp the concept and the route must be long enough to be cheaper than a taxi fare to the same destination. Out of all the bus companies to try it they are the ones most able to make it work I'd say.
  6. Actually they change over there (88 service only) as they cannot change over at Morrisons due to change over at Morrisons already for services 83/83a, 265, 87. The 87 was moved from the stop near the Travellers pub because of compliants over road blocking. Besides there is a steering wheel in your car, try using it to steer round the bus. Works for me on that road.
  7. I use public stransport to work and if I don't wish to drive both bus and train and can say its not a 2nd class service or a joke. The bus turns up on time, is clean and the monthly saver I can get cheap on their website delivered to my door (soon to be smartcard) so I'd argue not a bad service. In my experience of public transport over the years the busses are reliable despite what people seem to think and clean although prices have gone up at times the recent reductions have addressed this. There are the odd hic ups but they are few and far between or are not the operators fault. Fun runs in town spring to mind! The biggest difference I've noticed of late is the amount of new busses hitting the streets and at a price of around £200,000 for a double decker they must be financially viable. A point to remember is that cross subsidy of profit from high frequency routes to low frequency routes is illegal although I'm sure the companies do find a way round somehow. On trains they were disgusting and shocking before Northern Rail took the franchise and since then have been improved by no end considering the franchise allows for no new trains and assumed no passenger growth! Bit expensive though in my opinion outside South or West Yorkshire.
  8. I think you need to read it more carefully yourself. I know what I cut and pasted because the key word here is "regularly working with children" which is what your parent or conductor would do 5 days a week. There will be jobs that could work with children once a week or once every two weeks say that may not be requiring a CRB check. The directgov wording is to cover all such situations.
  9. No drect bus as the X10 is Monday to Saturday. You would need to change busses in town or Firth Park or get the train (which will be very busy as only hourly).
  10. The Directgov website states: When you apply for certain types of job you may be asked to apply for a criminal record check. These are generally jobs that mean you: 1) will be working regularly with children 2) will be working in certain activities with adults considered vulnerable at that particular time 3) will be working in healthcare 4) have applied to be a foster carer, adoptive parent or childminder 5) will be working in certain other professions (details of all these professions are provided on the link below) The minimum age at which you can be asked to apply for a CRB check is 16 years old. If you do need a criminal record check, your prospective employer will let you know and tell you what to do next. That means the bus drivers will be all CRB checked and so would your conductor or volunteer need to be too. It doesn't matter what you think it only matters what the law says.
  11. Your the one who is lazy. Have you not heard the phrase 'just in case'? Works wonders. If you get on the bus with £20 and ask for £2.90 etc you obviously need a slap for being dim! How many busses of Stagecoach and First actually use the bus station........less than you think. I'm sure in the interest of staff safety they will be delighted to ask their staff to carry a £20 float in the street. Obviously you don't care about the driver's safety but may be they actually do.
  12. 10.55pm but only as far as Ecclefield Common. 9.55pm is last one through to Sheffield.
  13. If there was any flooding and I say if as the flooding of Ecclesfield was also down to people buildi9ng things in the stream area they should not have and the council not keeping the river area clear of vegitation. If they discharge in to Blackburn Brook any flooding would not be in Chapeltown it would be further down the stream towards the motorway etc. As for parking it won't effect the residential estate as if people cannot park on the verge near the roundabout then they will be able to park on the newly built Smithy Wood business park. No restrictions there and nearer than the estate.
  14. Stagecoach run the 83 and your comment about First being rubbish. I wish you luck with the 83 because it constantly bunches up in twos and the Stagecoach 87 and 88's, well its not uncommon to see 2 or 3 in a row. I know this as they are the services I use on the northern section of the routes. Maybe Stagecoach are better on the 120 but they are by no means perfect and yes their busses break down too as the busses on the 79 route and currently the 78 are 10ish years old and originally were new for their Oxford operation. Prices are cheaper but don't think they are perfect. I agree currently they as a company have much more vision and seem better run but look to areas of Stagecoach where there is no competion and the fares are similar to First. Even the fares in Leeds charged by First are cheaper on the longer distance routes than Sheffield!
  15. No it wasn't. Beeching recommended the Hope Valley line closing with the Woodhead remaining open. This recommendation was not taken up due to the Hope Valley having a better social weighting to it than the Woodhead.
