  1. My choice would be to start with digital, for the simple reason that you get instant feedback on what you are doing right or wrong, rather than having to wait for the film to be developed. However, I agree with Matt that you will learn most by using it on Manual. With a view to future upgrading I would suggest any Nikon or Canon DSLR where you can upgrade the body at a later date but still use the same lenses.
  2. Re eBay - do Advanced Search and select Completed Items Only. You can then see what sold and final price.
  3. There must be millions of images of Las Vegas on google images he could just download or screenshot for a student project, including yours on flickr. I would err on the side of caution and ignore it.
  4. Suggest Canon Ixus 105. I got one for my wife and she's not great with technology but gets excellent snaps indoors and out. Small enough for the handbag, pretty in pink (or blue), decent flash for a little camera. You should be able to get one within budget (amazon, jessops etc.)
  5. Some thoughts. If you have lenses etc for Nikon, changing to Canon will mean new lenses so you will get less for your grand. What is it about the D40x that you are now dissatisfied with? If it is, say, that indoor action shots are too grainy, then go for a model that has a sensor that will cope (e.g. D700). Work out what you want then save up for the model you need if it's more than your budget - you don't want to spend that much and still not be totally satisfied.
  6. Thanks Matt. That's very kind of you.
  7. My daughter Amie has entered a competition for photography and design students. To view her entry entitled "Puppet Show" click http://www.annobooks.com/index/competition/order/recent/id/958. If you like it please register and vote. Anno is an online student design competition covering all the major design disciplines where the public chooses who makes it through to the finals. Simply log on to Annobooks and you’ll be able to view, vote and comment on the top student design work from the major design institutions around the world.
  8. I think the image can be improved and the water "cleaned" by first using tone map (curve) to lighten the high mid-tones (so the darker areas of water are lighter) then convert to black and white.
  9. The thing about the DSLR is that is is to an extent modular. Choose your body and select lens according to the type of photography you are doing. The modular DSLR is taking this one stage further, rather like buying a new car, select base model, options pack and then any additional features and it's built to order. So what could be the optional extras? 1. Control all features of the camera remotely from your Mac, including tilt and zoom. 2. Infra-red option for night shots and general artistic use. Of course, you want to be able to do this on a short exposure and adjust it to get the best possible colours. 3. Composure advisor - tells you when you you have the perfect framing using fibonacci, symmetry, thirds rule etc. Combined with (1) it could even point and zoom automatically. 4. Inbuilt polarizer option - automatically rotates for maximum colour saturation.
  10. Hi I would set everything to manual. I like a long exposure for rockets - may be 2-3 secs. Don't put the ISO higher than necessary to avoid graininess - 200 should be OK. Adjust the aperture until you are happy - dark sky and colour in the firework - start with F16 to f8. Also manual focus on infinity. If you look at sweethings photos you will see some are handheld as the lines all wobble in the same way. This can look good but you will need a tripod/monopod if it's not what you want. Good luck.
  11. Three things to consider here (maybe more). 1. You may cause an accident (e.g. by having a trailing cable that someone trips over) and they sue you. 2. Loss of "tools" - someone damages or steals your camera equipment. 3. You cannot deliver the promised goods to an acceptable standard (e.g. memory card gets corrupted.) You might be covered on 1 and 2 on your household insurance but it would probably exclude business activities. You might try to cover off 3 in your contract but beware of Unfair Contract Terms legislation. If the happy couple are miserable because they have no record of their big day, waving your fee will be little consolation. You will probably only need a modest amount of cover at this stage and if anything goes seriously wrong it could be £150 well spent. Hope none of this happens and you have as much fun as the guests.
  12. My daughter bought a D40x 3 years ago and has had good service from it. She has recently turned professional and now needs to upgrade As mentioned by Astraman, the focus motor is in the lens, so some Nikon lenses will not auto-focus on the DX40.
  13. My daughter's just got a first class honours in photography and has done several weddings already as well as work for model agencies and spreads in magazines including the front page of Made In Sheffield Magazine June/July 2010. See amieparsonsphotography.co.uk She's just starting out so will give you a good deal.
  14. Hi Phil It will work out cheaper to join a club than hire regularly at a sports centre. Clubs will have social or practice nights and then match nights for teams that play in Sheffield Table Tennis League. I am a member of Wadsley Bridge and the tables are free any time there is not scheduled practice, training or matches, so you just need to find a keyholder who fancies a game. You can find a full list of sheffield league clubs and contacts at http://www.sheffieldtabletennis.co.uk/
  15. If you're living up the north end of Sheffield, Hoyland leisure centre, which is actually in Barnsley MDC has a good range of decent equipment and a 25m pool that doesn't make my eyes red. The pre-pay scheme is good value if you intend going more than once a week. Near M1 J 36. I find it easier to get to than going into Sheffield.
  16. It seems to me that the most "talented" people in any field start young. They need the right genes but also the opportunity to identify their talents and develop the skills. The government of this country has never in my middle-aged experience sought out youngsters with potential and offered special development opportunities. Indeed it has probably got worse with the non-competitive philosophy and health and safety concerns. A lot of it is therefore down to opportunities provided by parents, and that favours families with sufficient income to pay for club membership, coaching, travel, equipment etc. Incidentally, it is something of an irony that our children should have only to co-operate rather than compete when all aspects of public service are now subject to competitive league tables. And of course in adult life we all have to compete, for example to get a job, so is competition not a life skill that should be taught? Team sports have it both ways - by co-operating the team can compete more effectively - and that is what we should be teaching our youngsters.
  17. Hi I have recently joined Wadsley Table Tennis Club which meets at Mousehole Forge near Malin Bridge and have been made very welcome. Wadsley Bridge is primarily a competitive club with eight senior, three junior teams and two summer league teams, but also has a few social players like me. Social practice is on Friday evening 7.15 til 9.30. There is also match practice Saturday afternoons 1 til 3.30. If interested contact rodbly@hotmail.com. Trevor
  18. I am looking at buying a flat in Cracknell and therefore interested in the problems at Redgrave. Has Cracknell had similar leaky windows, and if so have they already been fixed or due after Redgrave? How long are the repairs expected to take? Are there any other general faults with the building? (Can't get on the peveril extranet as I am not resident) Any info appreciated. Trevor
