  1. Went past the Ball last week and noticed it was all boarded up again. I was told today that it is now going to be a Tesco store. Another pub gone to the wall. Anyone heard any different?
  2. Got to admit. My favourite band on the clubs. I'm in Idsworth rd nearly every Sunday night but won't be there tonight I'm afraid. See you next week Craig (Rodders)
  3. Totally agree. Massive mismatch. As you say, not Kells fault as he was ordered to take the fight by I.B.F. or lose his title. Hope he gets a real biggy next up.
  4. My state pension will increase by £3-60p per month from April. My Council tax will increase by £5-00 per month from April. BRILLIANT.
  5. The whole problem with Anti social behaviour etc is getting worse by the day. Police just don't have the resources to deal with it. This is only going to get worse with the reduction in police officers due to cut backs. They say that there will be more PCSO's on the beat but without being over critical, what are they going to do. They don't really have any powers to arrest the scum that are blighting our streets. In the Sheffield Lane Top area over the past month there has been numerous muggings and attempted muggings. These are happening in the evenings, just after dark mainly, but others have happened during daylight hours. I know this a matter of fact as three friends of mine have been subjected to muggings/robberies ( all different muggings) in the past two weeks. One person ended up in hospital for five days. Some people are reluctant to report these attacks as the response from the police is non existent. So the perpetrators of these attacks get away with it and find it easy to carry on offending. I cannot for the life of me understand why this government is forcing these horrendous cut backs on essential services when it's obvious to everyone that the problem is increasing week by week. Why can't they get it into their thick skulls that more money needs putting into these vital services. I wonder how long it will be in the Sheffield Lane Top area before anyone is killed.
  6. Due to the sad passing of local MP Harry Harpham, I presume that there will have to be a by election in the very near future. Can anyone shed any light on this. Will the election take place on the same day as the local elections in may? or is this too long to wait?
  7. When I worked at Brown Bayley's on Leeds road, Attercliffe in the late 1960's and early 1970's, I used Attercliffe library all the time. I remember on one occasion I wanted to reserve a book called "Sir you *******". Feeling a little awkward at asking for the book, I whispered the title and author to the librarian. Unknown to me the librarian was a little bit hard of hearing and asked me to repeat the title again. I raised my voice a little and repeated the request, again she asked me to repeat the title of the book. I did so in a slightly higher voice ( but still quite low). She suddenly realised what I had said and almost shouted back at me " Sir you *******" yes we do have it but it is out at the moment so do you want to reserve it?. The library was quite busy at the time and everyone turned round to see who was ordering a book with such a title.
  8. There is a scrabble group who play at the Royal British Legion club in Chapletown on Wednesday lunchtimes. Don't know who runs it but I know they were there this week.
  9. I've been watching Wednesday since the mid fifties and I have been a season ticket holder since 1967. This is the best Wednesday side I have seen since the nineteen nineties. Another very good performance today against a very dogged Birmingham team. But lets not get too carried away folks, we are still that little bit short of being a top championship side. Nevertheless, come the opening of the transfer window, a couple of good signings and who knows? Over to you Mr Chansiri.
  10. R.I.P Hodgy. Total respect from a lifelong owl. What a keeper.
  11. Thanks again Hillsbro, the pic on the right is the same as the one I have.
  12. Thanks Retep and Hillsbro for your input. The medallion I have is not the same as the one for sale on ebay. I still can't understand why I have not come across anything like this before. If there were 500 or even 50,00 medallions given out then surely some would have been around for me to see over the years.
  13. In May1897 Queen Victoria officially opened the new Sheffield Town Hall. Apparently she was asked to open it in 1896 when the building was finished but she declined and said she would do the official opening in 1897 as part of her diamond jubilee year. The ceremony took place in 1897 and it was a rather splendid affair with all local dignitaries in attendance. Afterwards, it is reported the Queen then went to Norfolk Park where she was welcomed by approx 500 school children. All the children there were reportedly given a medallion to commemorate the occasion. I have just come across a medallion which is almost certain to be one of those. It measures one and a half inches diameter. On one side it has the head of Queen Victoria with the words " Victoria Queen of Gt Britain, Ireland and Empress of India." On the other side it has an image of the Town Hall with the words" Sheffield Town Hall May 1987". Now for one second I do not think it is worth anything of a monetary value ( especially if 500 were given away) but my query is why have I, or anyone I have discussed it with, not seen or heard of these medallions before. Can anyone shed any light on the matter please? I would be very interested to find out more.
  14. Yes I remember when Clarrie had the junction. I still see him from time to time cos his son steve is my mate. We go out together most weekends.
  15. If You look on the Royal British legion website, there will be some info on their quarterly magazine, called LEGION ( this is sent to all members of the british legion). They always have a page or two on people trying to get in touch with old service comrades etc. There are usually photo's accompanying requests for people to reply to.
  16. Could well be true what you say mate. At the end of the day though we need better than him I think if we are trying to improve the squad.
  17. Just heard today that Shola Ameobi is training with Wednesday after being released by Crystal Palace. The guy that told me this is usually spot on with this sort of info. But Ameobi is 34 in a couple of weeks time so maybe not what we are looking for.
  18. Firth Park W.M.C. is still open. Not very busy these days but it is a well run club and they are just about keeping their heads above water as far as finances go. Entertainment on Sat And Sun evenings and the prices are very reasonable. I go in most sunday nights to watch the bands. Alas, no pie and peas on sale these days.
  19. Got to agree Old Tup, A great fight to watch but a travesty of a result at the end. I couldn't believe it.
  20. I don't remember it in the comic but I was loaned a book a few years ago about "Wilson the wonder athlete". I wanted to buy a copy or any similar books about "Wilson". I did find some on ebay but they were very expensive.
  21. Thanks to all who replied but I have now sorted it.
  22. I don't have the equipment I'm afraid, but thanks for replying
