  1. My Late Father-in- Law recovered from war wounds at 1,Storth Lane Fulwood & I would like to know the history of this place or a possible Photo
  2. Hi Robert, I have a great deal of information plus photos of Levi & his Wife. We have traced the Thompsons back to the 1700's at the Lawns. If you e-mail me on [email protected] I can the send what I have. You are related to my Cousin Harry Thompson who I did the research for as he now lives in Swindon. We have visited the Lawns & met the Thompson relative who now lives there. Regards Michael John Archer (Sheffield)
  3. Thanks Hugh, I have had a look at the prints on Picture Sheffield. On the 1851 Census pages it looks like there were quite a number of families living there. My ancestor was a Farmer & it states that at Walkley Hall he was farming 15 acres of land. He later went on to farm at Grange Farm on Carter Knowle Road. Michael
  4. Does anyone know if there was ever a Walkley Hall or was it an area of the Crookes district. My ancestor on the 1851 Census for Crookes has his place of residence as "Walkley Hall". The Census page before as "Bole Hill" & the Census page after as "Howard Hill". My ancestor was a Farmer from Rivelin on the 1841 Census.
  5. Yes I am tracing my Thompson cousins roots. They are both in their eighties & no longer live near. I have the book that you mention ..."Reminiscing Rivelin" plus "A tree in the Valley". The oldest Thompson that I have traced to my cousins was a George Thompson born at the Lawns Farm in 1756. The Family I believe have been in the area since the 1500's. I have a current photo of the Farm but would love to see any old either photos or prints. Michael
  6. Many thanks for your suggestion.I will contact Malcolm Nunn at Bradfield Archives. This Farm is near to the old Post Office on Rivelin Valley Road & I could see Redmires Dam in the distance confimed by my ordance survey map. It was I must say quite a distance from the Farm. There are some old Water Work buildings to the left of this Farm which I presumed were to do with the Dam. Michael
  7. It is in the Rivelin Valley near the Old post Office on Rivelin Valley Road. & not too far from the Redmires Dam Close to the Waterworks buildings.
  8. Can anyone advise me of where I can obtain an old photo of this Farm where my ancestors lived from the 1750's.
  9. Can I say a big thank you to all these replies. My Broadband has been down for about 4 days so I couldn't get on to this site. Message to "Lectrolove"... thanks for the photos. This is definately the right Farm. My ancestor Henry Thompson was the Farmers son here.He courted & married the Landlords Daughter of "The Prince of Wales Inn" just up the road from this Farm. Message to "KivWahHistory" ..I will go into to Surrey Street as you recommend.
  10. I have now got a confirmed address for the Farm I am seeking. It was called "Grange House Farm" and was on Carter Knowle Road Sheffield S7 2ED. It was sold on 23/11/2004 for £4,555.00. I got this from a web site named http://www.thisishouseprices.co.uk. I still haven't got a photo of the Farm. Can anyone help?
  11. I would love to see either an old photo or print of Grange Farm,Carter Knowle,Sheffield. My ancestor farmed here in the 1860's. It is now demolished & taken over by urban sprawl. Can anyone point me in the right direction to obtain my quest.
  12. I would be most interested in your friends connection to the Thompsons. I am doing this research for my cousin Paul Thompson who now lives in Morecambe & is unable to come to Sheffield very often. The Thompson family had moved from Bradfield to Grange Farm, Carter Knowle,Ecclesall by the 1861 Census. William Thompson having married Sarah Richards in 1859. My cousin is related to their son Henry Richards born in Bradfield in 1843. He became Henry Thompson some time later. I will give you my e-mail address & if you require any copy of Birth or Marriage Certificates that would help your friend I would be more than happy to send them. I already have the disc for St.Nicholas churchyard burials from 1813-1899. It's the Baptism & Marriage records that I need to help me to identify George's wife. my e-mail [email protected] Many thanks Michael
  13. I did realise my mistake in the name & confirm that it should have read "George Wilson". I have just pulled up a photo of the said George Wilson on the "Picture Sheffield.com" library service. He was a very striking looking gentleman. Wilson Road was according to the book "Street names of Sheffield" Quoted ... was named after the Wilson family of Sharrow who owned extensive land in the area in the nineteenth centuary, including land on which the Botanical Gardens were built. Many thanks to everyone who took the time to answer my curiosity on this family.
  14. Whilst pulling up the 1881 Ecclesall Census for my ancestors who ran the "Prince of Wales Inn" at the time I was curious to see the family of Wilson's who were on the same page & living at the "Banner Cross Hall". The Head of the houshold was listed as a Robert Wilson JP aged 52 from Scotland. His occupation was "Iron & Steel Master employing 4,861 men" Does anyone know which Firm he was the Master of? as I have lived in Sheffield all my life & have never heard of Robert Wilson. It must have been a very large firm to employ so many workmen. The family appear to have lived in style at the Hall as the list of employees is very large & includes a teacher from Switzerland.
