  1. I was at the opening of the Winter Gardens.... god, that was aages ago now.... I just remember it being cold... oh and fireworks.... When I first went in, I was a bit disappointed really, there wasn't anything particularly special about the plants in there.... Although I do like the way that it's very nicely joined onto the millenium galleries... Anyway, I still like the place... love the architecture, and it's a nice place to sit to have your lunch when the weather is poo... in that sense it's probably more useful than the peace gardens since british weather being the way it is, I can see the winter gardens getting more use... Then again, if you're sitting in the peace gardens, it's something nice to look at.... much nicer than the egg-box anyway... Such a shame that they're going to put a hotel in the way of the view... Unless the put a big hole in it... or they get the same architect to work on it so that the hotel works in harmony with the winter gardens.
  2. The tuesday classes at the Forum is run by some members of the University Salsa Society, so they are in fact pretty much the same people. As is Mas Adelante in the Fez Club. However, Saturday and Sunday lessons at the University are over for this academic year, lessons there will start up again at the beginning of the next academic year in October. For more information e-mail: [email protected]
  3. Aww... what a shame... first time I've heard of anything like that happening to a restaurant round here... Hopefully it's not some racially motivated attack or some vendetta or something... Though still worrying if it's some random vandals... Incidentally, Tim Po Moor was broken into last week, they had the alcohol, stereo and telephone stolen... a bit of a shame too since it's about the 3rd time that they've been broken into for alcohol to be stolen.... Anyway, let us know what you thought of the Turkish restaurant... (Also interested to find out what Turkish food is like...)
  4. You may want to check out http://www.animesuki.com
  5. Are you Steve?..... Hoho... I wonder if you can guess who I am...
  6. Last showing of this academic year has been and gone... don't expect things to start up until October when Uni life gets cranking again.... Oh yes. Hallam have started up a soc now... I believe that they will be taking over our extra showing, that is, we'll be dropping our extra showing, and they'll be taking over... but in Hallam... Mainly because we don't want to run in competition with them, but instead choose to run in partnership... However, from what I hear, the lineup for Hallam Anime will be "popular stuff that's dubbed". Which is a fair bit different from Sheff Uni... since the way we do things is, to show what we consider as "quality" anime with a good mix of genres and not pandering to any one particular taste or the majoity vote. However, I sense Hallam Anime being in general a friendlier more social kind of society.... Finally, Sheffield Anime will most probably be providing a "Give it a go" showing during Fresher's week next year. We had one at the beginning of this year too, which was a Miyazaki film, but I forget which one, "Spirited away", most probably... anyway, what "Give it a go" is, is a university society opportunity thing where you get to have a go at society activities without having to register with them. So for this, Sheffield Anime will be having a one-off showing of some good quality anime movie in the Auditorium (with big cinema-style screen.). I suspect that it may be another Miyazaki film... cost of entry will still be £1 to cover the costs of hiring out the auditorium. I'd say it's well worth it to see a Miyazaki film on the big screen.
  7. Dragon Half is one of my favourites... unfortunately what happened was that only two anime eps were ever made, I'm afraid... However, it all started off as a Manga anyway, so you can try and get hold of that, there are quite a lot of volumes out... It's pretty old, so it's probably quite difficult to get hold of, it was coming out when I last went to HK (and bought a couple of volume, hoho)... and I think I must have been about 14 at the time... so eh... longer than I care to remember, really... Manga is much better than anime anyway...
  8. Not been updated for ages, I'm afraid... our web guy went AWOL, and we haven't gotten round to replacing him yet....
  9. Really? Who are you? I'm the treasurer, though I hardly ever turn up anymore Anyway, anime we show are mostly fansubs, though we do our best to buy series on DVD using the soc money for our showings because the quality of the translations tend to be better... However, we have released a fansub of our own, of the Berserk series, I believe, which is pretty damned good, if I do say so myself.... Anway, what's all this about "japanese japanese anime"? Surely anime by definiton is Japanese? Anyway.... we're the second biggest soc in the country, second ever soc in the country too, I believe. Losing out on both counts to the London anime soc... damn londoners... (¬___¬) However, London only meet once a month or something, and do their showings on a tiny TV screen or something... we show anime on a huge cinema-style screen.... but London anime is more of a social thing than an anime screening thing.... Oh yes, first ever anime convention in the UK was held in Sheffield, by the way.
  10. Does anyone know what happened to the new Turkish Restaurant on London Rd? I can't remember what it was called, but I believe it may have been "La Turka"... maybe.. I was anticipating their opening when I saw it being set up... it opened, and then a week or two later it seems to have closed down or something, at least they weren't open for business a couple of days in a row when I happened to walk past...
  11. I think there's only one Chinese Take-away on Ecclesall Rd. I believe that it's called the "New Zing Vaa" but it's quite far up Ecclesall Rd... I think you'll find that Sheffield's Chinese food central will be London Rd. Whereas Ecclesall Rd has loads of western restaurants.
  12. Found the site... http://www.raftersrestaurant.co.uk/index.html
  13. I have to agree and say that the food in BBs is quite good, however, I must point out that it's not exactly very posh. Since that's one of your requirements, I wouldn't recommend BB's. Unfortunately, you don't get many posh restaurants in Sheffield. One romantic restaurant I would definitely recommend is Rafters, not Italian though... it's very warm, cosy and romantic... it's quite an intimate venue... and one of the more posh restaurants in Sheff. One of my faveourites... I believe that they have a website too, if you want to check it out from the comfort of your own computer.
  14. I'd say it's pretty much illegal... although I guess you can use the excuse of having DVDs in other regions that wasn't released in region 2. But, if you just use a region hack at home on your own DVD player, then I'd say you're pretty safe. It's unlikely that they'll be raiding your house to find a hacked DVD player. One problem is that it will most probably invalidate your warranty which will be a bigger problem with the more expensive brands. But if it's one that's a cheapy brand that only cost £30 then you might as well just buy a new one. It's a much bigger problem if you're hacking/chipping as a service, so those shops are much more likely to get done. I think I know the one on the moor though.... I don't know what it's called, but I know of it as the "dodgy CD shop"... if you've just come out of the moor, heading towards Staples, with Staples directly to your right... The shop is to your left, got bars all over the shop windows.
  15. Have another search for a "region hack" for your DVD player, it's really not worth taking it into a shop. Make sure you've got the model number correct. Most cheaper brands are easier to hack, actually.
