  1. There's one you can get from WHSmiths from 1904. Sounds a long time ago but the street patterns were pretty much the same until the sixties, and beyond in some cases. It's called summat like the Godfrey Edition and costs aout a fiver. Great Stuff.
  2. 'A Pitsmoor Camera' by JR Wrigley has a picture of Sutherland Road baths taken in 1974 (page 43), as well as some cracking pics of Pitsmoor in general. Great little book for eight quid.
  3. Nunnery pit closed in 1953. The last remaining bulidings stood until the seventies, exactly opposite William Cook's offices on Parkway avenue. We used to play around them. The last of the slag heaps was cleared away in about 1970, and was situated where Makro now stands. The last pit inside the Sheffield boundary was Handsworth, which according to Peter Harvey, closed in 1967. Not sure exactly where it was but someone will know.
  4. I knew a Shaun Creegan (not sure of spelling), went to Waltheof between 1978-83. Had a brother called David, 3 or 4 years younger. Could that be him? If so he lived on Staniforth Road, Darnall at the time next door to Dennis Cooper, one of our teachers. Reckon he'd be 42 now. Haven't seen him for years though.
  5. Don't get too giddy about this but I think it might still be possible to get Beech Nut. I'm pretty sure my mum bought some not long back, in a multipack, possibly in Darnall. Could've been PK, I'm not too sure. Maybe she's got a time machine. I will ask her tomorrow and get back to you all.
  6. East Hecla Works closed down not long after the national strike of 1980. There was quite a lot of bother on the picket lines at the time, as many private sector steel workers kept working. The site was cleared in the mid-eighties I think. Hadfields also took over Brown Bayley's old works on Leeds Road, near the baths. My dad worked there for a bit in the seventies. That factory remained derelict for some years, and was finally cleared for Don Valley Stadium. I have some pics of both factories somewhere.
  7. Just remembered another really cheesy one. Went something like: 'People walking round town with their radios on, listening to the sound Of Radio Hallam on194, keeps it going round Hallamland' Did I dream that one, or does anyone else remember it? I only ever hear Radio Hallam in taxis these days, and sadly it sounds just like Galaxy and all the other identikit stations out there. Maybe I'm just getting old though.
  8. CCC we sell all makes of caravans, Ridge tents and trailer tents, accesories.. PA Jewellery, the old bank, Commonside Walkley. That one worked, I remember every line. Then again, I don't get out much.
  9. Anybody remember these: Morris Bywater the manufacturing jeweller Only gold can make your dreams unfold (Bramall's Gold Room) Heatshield Windows Johhny Moran's your morning DJ on Hallam Radio (sung by Harry Chapin no less) And that long one that started 'Whether you live in Sheffield or on the Yorkshire Moors', a whole song about Radio Hallam 'the top of your dial'. I think they played it when there wasn't enough time for a paoper recors before the news.
