  1. Hi mel. I have sent you two long messages but the Forum keeps telling me l'm not authorised and cancels them. Please let me know if you receive this message.........Mike Turner.
  2. HI Lady Saffron.....I am Mike Turner who lives in Canada. I left Middlewood in 1975 and was a Chargenurse on nights. I trained from 1959-1962.I am married to Margaret Burgar, who was a dental nurse/chairside assistant in the hospital dental department. In Canada I worked in several hospitals in Edmonton, and retired as a senior Nursing Supervisor.I think you were thinking of a different Mike.......Mike Turner.
  3. Dear theonanathe. With regard to the southern English peoples pronouncing of certain english words, and the use of the long A.I believe the reason is because of the proximity of France, and the influence thereof. It was an18th century affectation started by fops and upwardly mobile snobs who wanted to distance themselves from their peasant relatives. Lately I have noticed that northern people are gradually adopting the Cockney glottal stop.I suppose this is the influence of TV.
  4. Hi The Zepplin.----What the hell is "Corus". I used to Work at a place called Sammy Foxes 1952-1955. It was a large steelworks, and I was an apprentice machinist in the Testhouse machineshop.there were 6000 employees there at that time. This was before Margaret Thatcher destroyed the steel industry of course. It was world famous for stainless steel.
  5. I have never tried Wards beer, but my preference in ale is first Boddingtons and secondly John Smiths.Whenever my wife and I go to our favourite fish and chip restaurant here in Edmonton,Alberta,Canada,I always have a couple of cans of one or the other, with my supper.Cant stand this Canadian lager that they sell over here though.Tastes like weasel ****.[Although Ive never tasted that].
  6. Hi.I remember working night shift,as a male nurse on ward 9 in Kingswood block in the 1960s.I used to sit in the staff room, which was at the corner of the building on the top floor. The small room had a huge mantlepiece and a big roaring open fire. The wind used to howl round the corner of the building, and I used to read victorian novels.Mostly Dickens and Trollope.the place had real atmosphere on wild winter nights.I remember being on duty there during the great Sheffield gale of 1961.I was on a ward dormitory of approx 50 male patients and just myself. The patients slept all night exept when they passed the door to go to the toilet,or when one would come in to borrow a fag and have a smoke with me and a chinwag.I had known all of them for years, and they Knew me.We were more like old friends.Nothing to be scared about. Its a shame that the hospital was knocked down because the Canadian houses of Parliment in Ottawa were built at the same time as middlewood hospital, and look similar in design.[Neo Gothic].I now live in Western Canada and have many fond memories of Middlewood hospital.
  7. Hi,Kickqueen.Keep away from upper William st.We lived there when we were first married in 1962.3 doors down from us was a thriving brothel. We told the police but they were not interested.I now live in Western Canada, but I read in the International Express, that the Manor&Wybourn estates are police "No go"areas that are ruled by drug gangs&drug lords.
  8. Hi-----Daledyke house in bradfield is definately haunted. It was built in 1720,[according to the lintel over the front door]and was a coaching inn during the 18th century. My Aunt&Uncle were damkeepers there for approx 30 years.
  9. Dear Frank---We lived in Stockarth Close from 1971-1975.I worked at middlewood hospital as a Staffnurse and later Chargenurse. My name is Mike Turner. We left to come to Canada, where I am now retired. What is your parents surname? I probably know you all.
  10. I was born in oughtibridge before WWII,but I was brought up in a prefab in scraithwood drive, and went to shirecliffe school.I got the usual miserable education, that the working class were given back then, and I remember a middleclass woman teacher telling us poor kids, that we were being given only enough education to become steelworks labourers,[This with a sneer on her face].I eventually made up for it by getting my education in the regular army.I thank God that I left England and came to Canada, where I recently retired as a senior nursing officer.----Mike Turner.
  11. Hi---There used to be a roll of honour in the Middlewood hospital church,of all the male staff who served in WWII.I wonder if it is still there?
  12. Hi---I trained as a Psychriatric nurse at Middlewood hospital, and was there from 1958--1975.When I left to come to Canada,I was a chargenurse. I have a copy of the 1973 centennial handbook of the history of Middlewood hospital, photos etc.It was sad to learn that the hospital was no longer there. My parents also worked there from 1927 until they retired,as chargenurse and sister respectively. My name is Mike Turner,in case anybody remembers me,and I now live in Edmonton,Alberta,Canada.I recently retired here as a senior nursing officer. It amazes me to learn that Kingswood block has been converted into luxury apartments, and called Kingswood Hall.I was night chargenurse of that block in 1973 and 1974.Its a wonder the building isnt haunted with all the people who lived there since 1873.
