  1. It all depends on what sort of spider you wanted and how fancy you wanted the tank, ill give an example on my red knee that i bought as the pink toe i addopted from a friend who emigrated. Red knee spiderling (1cm) was £5 from the spider shop, Rearing jar for housing was about £1 (p&p for both items was around £9) I later bought a mini aquarium for her, that was £4 ish Substrate for housing, i use coir bark and its about £3-4 but this lasts ages as you only need an inch or two at the bottom, it comes compacted and puffs up, i still have the first one i bought after two small tank cleans and one large. Some spieces prefere substrate mixed with vermiculite, you can get that from garden centers but i dont have it for mine. Hide, i first used a bottle top sunk down as shelter, thats how tiny she was! Now i have a half hollowed log for her to hide under, about £1-3 Aboreal species need a long log in a tall tank to build a web on/around for there hide, high up like in there natural habital in trees, i havent had to buy these as mine pink toe came with her tank but i shouldnt think it should vary too much initially for a tank/hide Anything else you want to add thats tarantula safe, i have two mini skulls in fangs current tank, theres a tunnel dug under one where shes made a bit of a lair Heating, small reptile heat pad, i got mine on ebay for about £8 Water spray bottle, for misting the tank to keep humidity, can get these from poundland etc For more delicate species you may need a thermostat to check temperature and humidity etc Food, crickets or meal worms, around £2.50 a tub, i get mealworms and fangs eats the smaller ones out of the box and fluffy the slightly bigger ones, if choosing crickets feeding them lettuce etc helps them keep longer and pass on the nutrients, however they kept looking at me with thier little faces all sad, and fangs refused to eat them so i went for the mealworms and i find they keep a bit longer and are easier to feed to the tarantulas. Teeny spiderlings sometimes need pin head crickets to start off with, or fruit flies, usualy £2.50-4 Water dish, small spiderlings just need the housing interior misting to get there moisture, they get alot from there food, some people give bigger, adult tarantulas a dish but some dont, i dont have water dish's for mine. Spiderlings vary from £3-45 most of the recomended for beginer ones are less than £10 tho. I think ive covered everything. Most of thats from my experience of how ive been keeping mine, researching differnt websites and what they recomended, and what advice my friend gave me Roughly totting up the basics on the lower end price wise id say around £35 to start off (spider/housing/substrate/hide/heating/misting bottle/food), then it'll just be a case of buying the food at £2.50 as needed untill substrate runs out or a larger tank is needed, or you want to jazz it up etc Hope thats some help to you ---------- Post added 24-08-2013 at 01:34 ---------- Some pictures of my t's Fangs; Baby fangs, not long after moving into the bigger tank, little brown spider http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o168/livingdeadgirl13666/IMAG0834.jpg Hiding out in my skull http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o168/livingdeadgirl13666/IMAG0818.jpg First moult, now looking like a mini tarantula http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o168/livingdeadgirl13666/IMAG1024.jpg The moult http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o168/livingdeadgirl13666/IMAG1008.jpg Second moult, how she looks now, much more vibrant and more furry http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o168/livingdeadgirl13666/IMAG1385.jpg Fluffy Dinner time! http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o168/livingdeadgirl13666/IMAG1026-1.jpg 1st moulted skin while shes been mine http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o168/livingdeadgirl13666/IMAG0954.jpg Vibrance after moulting (excuse it being a screenshot of my phone wallpaper hehe) http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o168/livingdeadgirl13666/2013-07-03_08-04-10-1.png
  2. Tarantulas are quite easy to keep, if your thinking of getting one I would recomend visiting http://www.thespidershop.co.uk that's where mine have come from. They have a section on there website about which species are good for beginers, such as the red knee I have, and all the information you need about keeping them, you can also ring them for advice and there really helpful!
  3. Im so pleased it went to a good home and will be well used, It was lovely to meet you aswell Sam71 I keep pet tarantulas! I was nattering on about them, how they feed, what they eat, how they moult and grow etc, and i got out some of the previous sheds to look at I have a 2yr old martinique pink toe, my big un (called Fluffy) (pinky-purple/turquoise) and a 1yr old mexican red knee, still a baby sized tarantuala (called Fangs) (red/black)
  4. Thought perhapse a cat charity or someone might be able to make use of this, it is a little marked on the top and tatty looking in places but its still solid and doesnt look too bad from the side with peep holes. Shame to throw it out, FREE but needs collecting, couple of photos below; http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o168/livingdeadgirl13666/IMAG1265.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o168/livingdeadgirl13666/IMAG1266.jpg http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o168/livingdeadgirl13666/IMAG1267.jpg
  5. Thanks for everyone's advice so far, dog had several tinkles and is now laid out on the fleece throw I've put down. Gonna try and get some kip myself, hopefully get something sorted in the morning ---------- Post added 18-04-2013 at 09:48 ---------- The dog has been collected by the Sheffield dog warden. The man who came said that the dog looks more like a bulldog, but could be a cross, and that its deffinately an older dog. He's gonna check it for a microchip and try and find the owners. I really hope they do, if this could be your dog its at spring street and the number on the van for lost dogs was 0114 2037410
  6. Well since its an overnight thing for sure, I'm gonna take it for a walk and let the cats back in. Then try and figure out where to put dog where it will be comfortable and not cause upset to the mogs ---------- Post added 18-04-2013 at 01:01 ---------- I've not fed it as yet, it didn't touch the cats food when it went for a drink. I can get some dog food when the shops open in morning. The bed is free and dog is sleeping on the rug
  7. Yeah that's a good idea, ideally need to have something sorted asap as I'm working tomorrow afternoon and don't wanna leave dog in the house for 9 hours as it'd be unfair. On that subject I will take him for a walk soon before I nod off, do older dogs hold it till morning? Also its tummy is making some crazy gurguly noises and there have been trumps. Should I put paper down or something?
  8. I was walking home from work and found it playing chicken on barnsley rd, i couldn't stand by and let it get hit or cause an accident so I've got it with me. I did walk it round the area for an hour with no luck. The police couldn't take it and everything is closed atm. I think it might have already been involved in something as it has a cut on its nose and It's walking a little funny. It's sweet as pie and doeant seem underweight although it does smell funky. I'm not a dog person but it looks like a stafty. It seems quite old and its eyes are cloudy looking so possibly can't see too well. Rspca have been informed and It's been listed as found with them but they didn't have a match for it atm, 101gave me advice on what to do for it right now and have left a message for dog warden for me. Couldn't see anything on here for it but wanted to post just incase I can find the owner. Have I done the right things? I can't keep it here as I had to put the cats out and well its stolen my bed :/
  9. pixie - i think that it was put directly onto plaster too, looks like a dapples effect not a graining effect tho, and its shiny. I will try the sugestion of eggshell oil based undercoat, fingers crossed ill get it sorted one way or another!
  10. Sheffield council planning couldnt help but i did find a listing of a property sold on this street down as being built in 1938, so it could be between 1920-1940 era, still pretty old so i will be more wary. It looked perfect when id done it initially, then after a few months the cracks re appeared, its just bugging me as i want it to look nice
  11. Thanks for all the advice, i thought id found a solution when i sanded the walls and skirting boards on the landing, i filled in all the cracks and gave it several coats of paint, but a few months later two big cracks have come back through. I havent even attempted the stairs which is the worst part as i cant reach high enough to take off the wallpaper. Ive got two different ronseall fillers and will attemp using them on the landing, but i will check out that website and see if they have any other ideas, i think i looked on there initially but that would have been a while back. Thanks again
  12. I was hoping someone might be able to help me with this, i live on emerson crescent and was wanting to firstly find out when these were built. Ive got a bit of information that suggests pre 1920 but i havent been able to find out more than that. I wanted to find out as there is some sort of unusual paint work in the hallway and no matter what ive tried diy wise the paint ive applied cracks or wallpaper ends up with gaps no matter what i do, i thought if i could find the age of the house i could look into old paint types or materials that would have been used and perhapse come up with some sort of solution to the problem. The origional paint or whatever it is looks brown, almost like a wood or dappled effect but really shiney like its a varnish. Its not wood, or wallpaper and anything i apply over it either shrinks or has large cracks or gaps randomly all over the place. It just looks really messy It also seems to be on the skirting boards at the top of the stairs. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks
  13. Thanks for the replies i phoned them and sorted it out, gonna get some boxes and make them secure for the ones we dont have carriers for.
  14. I was wondering if anyone could give me a bit more advice, I have two cats and my relatives have three and we are wanting to take them all down for microchipping but were in a bit of a conundrum as i have one carrier and they also have one carrier. It says in the origional post cats must be in a secure carrier but does that just mean a proper cat carrier? or would it be ok if they were in a secure box, i have access to plenty of carboard boxes and could fashion some to be suitable as a temporary carrier and my big cat will happily go on a harness if that would be acceptable.
