  1. Same here...was put off by the 2 - 3 hour queue to get in but those who made it said it was stunning. Work now now starts on the refurbishment of the Eye witness works into apartments https://www.eyewitness-sheffield.com/
  2. So dad. I saw Ranking Roger's version of the beat up at the Brudenell just a few years back . An absolutely blinding evening full of energy .
  3. SCR appoints Dame Sarah Storey as Cycling and Walking Commissioner. Good choice, just hope she gets the same level of support that Boardman is getting in Manchester. https://www.cyclinguk.org/press-release/sheffield-appoints-dame-sarah-storey-cycling-and-walking-commissioner
  4. There was no limit until 1967. In 1964 Jack Sears took the Le Mans AC Cobra from the Watford Gap Northwards up the M1 at 185mph totally legally. Still the highest speed ever recorded on a British Motorway in a car. I think Jaguar managed to run an Etype on the M1 at 150 mph in 1965 . All done when the motorways were a lot less crowded
  5. They just tweeted this out. Big news for active travel now - #SCRMCA members have agreed to accept £4.2m from the Government's Transforming Cities Fund for active travel schemes across the region.
  6. It sounds like the 4 South Yorkshire local authorities have finally agreed on a joint approach that might free up the investment money. https://sheffieldcityregion.org.uk/breakthrough-in-devolution-for-the-scr/ Coincidentally the Regional Authority is meeting today in a building just over the road from us at the AMP. Looks like some have been inspecting the site which has just been cleared for the new retail outlet and bus station at Waverly.
  7. I think the speed cameras near between the bridge and Hagg hill are no longer operating . That dog leg over the bridge is notorious for black ice and the sight views at Rails Road are not good. either. Judging by the noise when Im walking the dog the bikers are going quicker now but I've also been overtaken by cars when Im sticking to 40 mph. My mate used to be a paramedic regularly working on that stretch. Plenty of horrible stories but not for this forum . Crash data on here https://www.crashmap.co.uk/Search
  8. They'll have to come to some arrangement with Farage's new lot wont they?
  9. https://www.thestar.co.uk/news/call-to-blockade-every-roundabout-and-junction-in-sheffield-as-part-of-nationwide-brexit-protest-1-9661065
  10. I head out to the AMP every morning . An inbound tailback past ASDA is the norm after 8.15 so didn't realise there was a protest in town. It just the looked like the usual queue of single occupancy cars. Was it moving more slowly than usual? What about the pollution that queue causes every day when there isn't a protest on?
  11. There is worse to come on Friday / Saturday. Truckers are planning a rolling blockade on the M1 and M18 in support of Brexit https://www.derbyshiretimes.co.uk/news/transport/m1-set-to-be-hit-by-nationwide-brexit-go-slow-protests-1-9657107
  12. no mention of the Ballymurphy massacre in the months before bloody Sunday? At least one was shot whilst waving a white flag to go to assist a wounded man. 2 Para were said to be involved.
  13. Don't forget . Today is the last day to renew your passport in time for travel to Europe on or just after the 30th. That assumes we are leaving on that day with no deal but why take that risk Usually 6 months required but check before you get turned away from your Easter holiday flight https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/check-a-passport
  14. in 1936 Granddad opened his door to give the original Jarrow marchers shelter at their rest day in Leicester /Northants before their final 90 miles walk to London over the final week The locals gave them food as some were struggling and hungry. The cobblers mended their boots for free. Nigel the ex commodity trader and millionaire doesn't know he's been born. I'm just glad Granddad isn't here to see this misappropriation of history. I see from post above that the glorious leader isn't even walking the whole route.
  15. Many a fond drunken memory of R&Bs as I worked next door at KTG glass furnace contractors, then over the road at the new build which bankrupted the company. .The racehorse, the coppers coming in from over the road, the time Ruth threw a bucket of water over a parking warden and ended up in court, Much like Linda from the Harlequin (demolished) and Red House (now a shop) I wonder what became of them all Anyway back the the present, Ill be giving it a try for old times sake. Now if only sombody could save the lovely old pub that is the Queens on Scotland Street
  16. I can confirm the 4-hour swap over from attending meetings at SHU, Collegiate Crescent. There was the point when the meetings used to get held up when some attendees had to go out to move their cars around. Bit farcical It's a long time back but I recall that the original restrictions were to be 2 hours but SHU objected and it was raised to 4.
  17. Attention seeking...isn't that the that was the whole point of a protest? As we already know on another thread Monday and Tuesday had very high pollution levels across the city. The bus protest made look north on Monday night, was streamed across social media, the local press and this forum First have made a statement about there commitment to cleaner buses and now know that the public will be holding them to that. So Id say Mr Rust has made his point successfully. Do you think First would have responded in the press if he simply used the form below? https://www.gov.uk/report-smoky-vehicle
  18. thanks for the info. Cheaper than respro as well. Ordered one
  19. It was pretty bad last night on the final drag up the hill past the traffic queues. There also seemed to be a lot of smoke in the air as well. If it carries on like this I may have to ride the city bit with a respro mask on though I doubt they stop the PM10s getting through. Luckily on a bike, you are at least exposed to lower pollution levels than those sat in traffic. We are looking at getting one of those realtime particulate motor installed at the end of South Road where the queue backs up every night so we can add another data point to the map. I'm told its 30 quid. Not just Sheffield though, there are problems all over. Not much wind around to shift it https://www.independent.co.uk/environment/air-pollution-uk-alert-warning-london-sadiq-khan-scotland-yorkshire-a8797216.html
  20. A huge crowd down there at 1.30 when I rode down. Quite a day in Sheffield. Back tonight for more celebrations
  21. We are also thinking Bolehills as that's our morning dog walk anyway. Might head down to Endciliffe park first thing just to see what the crowd is like then head back up the hill for the flypast. Im told the route away will be over Stannington so in theory, a nice seat up on Bolehill should give you a grand view as they depart. Don't forget later in the day, head down to the canal basin for the 200th-anniversary event which should be a cracker as well given the great weather forecast.
  22. Was working at SHU at the time. We had two years of Y2K compliance meetings in the run-up. Everything that didn't comply was replaced or upgraded.
  23. if nothing else he has to be congratulated for his stance on mental health and suicide prevention. As Jake Burns from SLF says, just get out and talk about it https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/alumni/news/suicide-prevention-charter-lord-mayor-magid-1.805666
  24. Maybe they were after the cash point? They tried to do the one in Gerrys Bakery a few weeks ago
  25. Been in Manchester for two days. I visit often but this time I have to say it wasn't exactly bustling . Oxford road dead last night. Went to a nice food hall up in the northern quarter this morning, very similar to the one we have at Neepsend but pretty quiet. The big thing they have is their tram extension, it actually goes places you want it to Stayed out at Salford Quays for 26 quid a night and trammed in. Back here at 3 pm, the centre of Sheffield, even Fargate was busier than Manchester. Maybe a bit cold for them over the other side. Possibly the students away for the semester change over? As for Leeds, you've got to admit its pretty grim coming out of their station. Gone are the days when we would go up there for shopping. These days its just a drive in for gigs and get back out again. Not worth staying over. Now if all these cities had a half decent rail link between them that ran past midnight they'd all benefit from a bit of extra trade
