I have a large Sheffield silver plated tray I'm trying to value. The only marking it has are similar to a hallmark, might anyone recognize the symbols?

A Channel 4 documentary yesterday, Wuhan ‘lab leak’, featured several eminent scientists and pretty much stated it came out of the Wuhan lab.
The gist was when a organism jumps species, in the first month it mutates to become more infectious in that species.
Not the case with Covid.
It was also stated the lab was doing controversial 'gain of function' work on it. GOF is where, to anticipate future threats, an organism is enhanced. The lab had funding from the US and China for this and was only using level 2 security protocols. -
Thanks for the suggestions. Yep, have checked the toilet, gutters were done couple of months ago and have a dehumidifier (which helps but just in single room).
Will try the header tank cut off, and if that is ok the damp meter.

Thanks for the replies. Yep, it is lived in with heating but there is little in the way of carpets and so on that might be a cause (replaced with laminate flooring).

I am after some advice on what is probably a hidden water leak in my house.
There has been a damp musty smell for months (the house has little in it)
It has a water meter ( shows litres) so I checked it before going away for a few days, it hadn't moved when I got back, so no apparent leak on the inbound side.
Next, as I have an electric shower and can do basic plumbing, I put in a lever valve from the hot water tank, to take the hot water pipes out of it.There was a 20% decrease in the smell.
I also took up a couple of the floorboards to check if the was any damp in the void but it seems fine.
So I reckon it must be in the waste piping or the central heating pipes. Any recommends or tips? Is my option now to get a plumber to troubleshoot it?

Quotethis is just a rambling world salad of half thought through propositions.
The subjective experience of time does appear to vary, generally in proportion to metabolic rate:
QuoteThe problem these days is that when people use the term ‘elites’ you have a sense of what sort of person they are, but you can no longer tell if they are far right or far left nutjobs.
That’s called an ad hominem attack, which is another logical fallacy.

No, not a political statement. Previous industrial change radically altered society and I am just interested in how the powerful will embrace roboticisiation.
Power I believe will become concentrated and perhaps democracy may not adapt. On an individual level, I agree it will give freedoms and opportunities not seen before.
I work in IT, with some AI (though perhaps artificial stupidity is currently a better term) and breakthroughs will give whichever countries huge advantage.A scenario (bear with me):
If talking about time you need to make a distinction between physical time and a creature's sense of time.
Most creatures have self awareness, it seems to be a biological brain construct, but the self awareness of a bird may let it experience time more quickly and be able to evade those 'slower' than it (even though both have the same neuronal speed).
Once the mechanism of self awareness is understood, any culture would also be able to scientifically adjust the rate that time is experienced. And the self awareness of an AI? time for them must seem to be almost stopped.

As artificial intelligence and robotics replace humans in the work force, the elites won't need our labour as much as they used to.
As resources dwindle and the population rises might we be surplus to requirements?
A stretch, but perhaps in the not too distant future there will be a manipulated war or pandemic to thin the herd.

I'm interested in how the economics would work out. Scotland has a population of about 5M (same as South Yorkshire), the UK has 66M.
European countries with 5M are Denmark and Norway, and they are not cheap places to live -
On 25/11/2019 at 10:06, ianparkin said:I was lucky to get a ticket for this event as asked in the opening post of this thread for ideas for questions
Then about 7 mins before broadcast started i was told i would be the opening questioner..
theres lots of articles and videos circulating now about bbc bias as to the audience selection
I personally thought it was balanced perhaps with a little left swing though hardly suprising if the audience was sheffield/south yorks based
though there were a lot of scots there
What did you think ChrisLB?
What did suprise me was the amount of heckling and booing going on that wasnt heard on broadcast
Yep, agree exactly about the audience balance, think they did pretty well given the possible pitfalls.
Was surprised how utterly relaxed Fiona Bruce seemed! Also how absolutely 'live' it was!
Jeremy seemed a bit hesitant at first (person next to me said that as well) and Boris's body language, when he entered, appeared really defensive.
My takeaways? Oddly, an increased respect for politicians. The thought of being asked what I thought on any of my four questions led to a lot of research and an appreciation of the difficulty of giving a good answer. Secondly, the realization of, with live TV, just how many things really, really could go wrong.
Lastly, would I recommend it? No. When you split from a partner, you think of all the things you wish you had said, it's like that, but ten times worse. -
Was lucky enough to be in the Question time audience. Boris has lost some weight, felt like asking him, with all this spending, whether he would be buying a new suit

It seems these days that 'New improved' just means they have found a cheaper ingredient to substitute.
Downsizing also seems to be on the increase, noticed my 500g pack of lamb mince from Aldi is now 475g.

On the BBC's Politics today Mr Self sparked an angry reaction from the right-winger by claiming “every racist and anti-Semite in the country” voted for Brexit.
Mr Self said earlier on the show there were many rational reasons for leaving the EU but there said many of the key proponents of Brexit believed in an “ethnic nationalist Britain”.

Fellow panellist Grace Campbell later tweeted that prior to the show Self had suggested Francois had a small manhood.

Better or worse? More congested? Less traffic lights? Fewer buses and automated pod rides?
Less crime?
Will Brexit bring many changes say with Europeans returning home?

The proximity of Salisbury to Porton Down suggests he might have been helping with research there.
Perhaps too much for Russian liking.

They have rejected a 'first' bid but if they are bought what might be the consequences for Sheffield?

Just finished an intro to geology and am interested to know if there are any local sites that are good for fossils.
Also best places to try some rock identification
Cheers

It looks like most of the 47 stores that Asda will not rebrand of the 194 will be Morrisons or Haldanes:
Dansk Supermarked A/S agreed to sell its 194 UK Netto stores to Asda for £778m in May 2010This was confirmed in September, when the OFT announced that it had reached agreement with Asda to divest 47 stores where there were local competition concerns. Of these, the OFT was concerned that some stores may not be of interest to other eligible food retailers, so required Asda to find suitable upfront buyers for those shops before it would allow the remaining store purchases to proceed. At the time, however, “reasons of confidentiality” meant that the identity of the 47 stores to be divested was not revealed; similarly, the number or locations of stores requiring upfront purchasers were not made public either.
Now, yesterday’s various announcements from the parties concerned reveal that Asda has secured buyers for 39 of the 47 divestment stores – including all 25 of those on the upfront list – in the shape of Morrisons, Iceland and the independent grocer Haldanes.
Morrisons 16 stores
Haldanes - 20 stores
Iceland – 3 stores

The 3 day Lib Dem conference in Sheffield from March 11th is going to cost SY police 2M including the setting up of a special anti protest unit.
They cancelled the previous one in London due to possible disruption.

A sign of the times that this year's judging panel of the Man Booker prize are being issued with Ebook readers. I guess within a few years those wonderful second hand book stores will be gone.
Some of my best reads have been found in them, will it be so? and how long?

Just doing my books and need to know the price of the First weekly bus ticket for the period April 2008 to May 2009.
