  1. I have a couple of packets (about 200g) I need to send to the USA. I normally send them Royal Mail Airsure for about 6 quid. Does anyone know if a post office will accept them today Tuesday or will I have to wait till Wednesday? and does anyone have any idea of the delay there will be due to the backlog? Should I send them from the main post office in town or will a local one be as quick? Is there any alternative service, my budget is about up to 8 quid, couriers seem to charge about 30 for any items less than 1KG (which is a bit odd given Americans send similar stuff here for about 12 quid by the same courier
  2. Someone suggested that water was diverted to protect critical structures like the power grid at the cost of flooding homes. It might explain why flood defences did not work. Anyone have knowledge of this?
  3. Just got back from town where Ponds Forge just has a note on the door saying it is closed today (Wednesday) due to a power cut. Anyone know if it is back to normal tomorrow? (nothing on their web site!)
  4. I wander if this will affect us in any way?
  5. In the interests of decorum, I shall delete the profanity from the following rant: _____ _____ public transit in this _______ ______ ______ city is _______ ______ ________ ________! The ___________ _____ who make up the _______ _________ schedule are a bunch of _________ _________! That feels better. Thanks for _______ listening.
  6. I guess I would remove half the traffic lights. Congestion would drop by 20% at a stroke. Then I'd open lots of the rat runs back up so another 20% of the traffic locked in the one way system after a wrong turn could be taken out of the loop! There must be lots of empty council owned building that could be converted into car parks so taking another 20% of traffic driving round looking for somewhere to park and finally I would do a check on the loading of bus routes. A third are packed and two thirds have just a few people on.
  7. Each week I walk past vendors stalls with '650 jobs in tonights edition' on the front. Well this week the section seemed a bit thin so I counted them. 228. Slightly inaccurate.
  8. Apparently the ASLEF delegation to the Labour party conference, due to a delay in processing passes, after queuing from when they arrived on Saturday gave up and went home on Tuesday!
  9. A recent survey has named Sheffield as the worst place in the UK for car theft. They reckon that you are five times more likely to get your car stolen here (apparently the Ford Orion is the most targeted).
  10. Have been thinking about doing this for a bit. Would save me 15.00 a week on bus fares and probably make me a lot healthier. Is it safe, practical (am 5 miles out)? Have the bike but what about carrying stuff? Cheers
  11. There is a comic and sci-fi fair in Sheffield every couple of months at Sheffield Hallam. There are about 40 stalls. Their website is: http://www.goldenorbit.co.uk
  12. So a person is not a reliable judge of whether they are lucky or not but I guess that means luck may still exist? I think there was a book, Ringworld, where an alien race bred humans for luck then picked the luckiest for a mission (but they forgot the really lucky ones wouldn't show on their charts).
  13. Does luck exist? or is it just some ego defense mechanism so we can say we are unlucky to justify a lack of success? If it does exist does it even out, so if you've been unlucky for 30 years are you in for a cool 40 years? Is luck of you're own doing, if you feel lucky does that create it or is it just another term for lack of confidence? Are only people who think they are unlucky reading this thread?
  14. No, not thinking of doing a Reggie Perrin, am abnormal in my normality Just have this crazy sense of humour and don't think I could keep a straight face if ever had to go to one, would never be able to tell the truth!
  15. Thinking about it not sure I know the difference. Know that a Psychiatrist has a medical degree plus presumably a post graduate degree. A psychologist I know told me in the entire three years of his course he had just one lecture of Freud but that psychiatry is still based on his broad theories. Seems strange
  16. Just wondered what it's really like, have seen so many films curious if they really have a couch and stuff
  17. If it's the Wharfdale Netto are selling the bloke was probably trying to take it back Had one from Argos a few months ago and on every Divx it locked up after about 10 minutes.
  18. Just doing my shopping when a BMW crashed straight into the car park wall off the main road. Ambulance and police cars.
  19. Had to catch the 51 from Lodge Moor into town yesterday. It's supposed to be every 10 minutes. Was stood there from 10 to 3 until 25 past. Is it always this bad? Four went past the other way, someone said the terminus is 3 minutes away, what have they got up there the Burmuda triangle?
  20. Recently saw a film 'Outfoxed' about how Murdoch used his empire during the Bush re-election. Very interesting. One technique was a catch phrase was coined to highlight a weakness of the other candidate and was repeated by commentators giving reports at all levels of his media.
  21. I used to listen to the BBC World service a lot. I liked the clarity of the reporting but noticed occasionally news items were not misreported but omitted. I can understand that should be if the facts are in doubt but what if it is because it is simply thought it may cause offence or because we have economic interests that may be compromised? If newspapers and so on don't print letters for the same reasons do not our politicians gain a distorted perception of the peoples views? Does this British 'overpoliteness' become dangerous in such a context? Or is it naive to think for one minute that the politicians don't know exacltly what people are thinking?
  22. I run for about 20-30 minutes a day on concrete. Wandered if anyone can recommend some really well cushioned trainers. I have a cheapo pair from Aldi ('scientific trainers') with some heel cushion inserts I got from Decathalon but guess there is much better. A friend who teaches a dance class says she uses a budget pair as they reduce the impact more than expensive Nikes.
  23. Yep, I go running up there early morning, quite often see a police car checking the place out.
