  1. Thanks one and all.

I've now been able to establish what was going on and as probedb says it is indeed

    someone being a dick.
. Given their latest activities, I think they may well have just bitten off far more than they can chew :)

Metaphors which spring to mind are David, Goliath, my White Knight and Cheshire Cats - me being the Cheshire Cat.:hihi:

  2. Thanks for replies so far. The complaint is from someone else who is complaining that I sent them an email today. There is nothing in my outbox, sent box, junk, spam, deleted or drafts to that person.

If they were to send me the email which they are alleging I have sent them earlier today, would I see the headers of their email to me in which they are forwarding my email and the headers in the email they are alleging is the email I sent them?

What I want to know is it worth while asking them to forward this email so I can check the headers to see whether this email which purportedly originated from my email account did in fact come from somewhere else?

I also wonder whether the person who is making this complaint might be doing so simply to be difficult and unreasonable - they are downright obnoxious.

  3. I have just received a complaint alleging I had sent someone an email this morning. I have never sent any emails to that person this morning. As far as I am aware no-one has hacked in to my email account either. Are there any other ways to send an email purporting to be a sender other than the sender?

thanks - think i've found what I'm looking for and should know for certain by Monday whether it's available.

  5. I need to buy a camcorder for video interviews - 90 minutes minimum duration as well as recording workshops or other activities. Harrisons now only sells a Sony which retails for about £200. I've also just been advised that Nikon's camcorders are superior to the Cannon in terms of lens sharpness etc.

As I know nothing about camcorders I'd like some advice on the best to go for and how it compares with the Canon http://www.johnlewis.com/canon-legria-hf-r46-hd-1080p-camcorder-3-28mp-32x-optical-zoom-8gb-wi-fi-3-touch-screen/p435728?colour=Black.

Would I be better advised to go for this Sony camcorder https://outlet.sony.co.uk/shop/Camcorders/High-Definition-Memory-Stick/HDRCX280EB.CEH.A

Willing to pay up to £200-£300 + a further £50-100 for spare batteries, memory cards, camera case, tripod and memory card cases from 7dayshop.com

    Many thanks

  6. Sounds like your best bet is to go into meetings armed with research supporting your viewpoint such as "Advice given on this child protection website says...", "Having spoken to schools/etc. that have similar issues with their websites they recommend...", etc. When that person can only reply with bluster at least everyone else in the meeting will know who knows what their taking about and can make decisions accordingly.

Good advice for future reference - the relevant people are no longer involved - and I was checking things out to ensure id covered all angles. Thanks again one and all for your very helpful advice and wishing you all the season's greetings.

  7. It would be interesting to know why this person thinks that it is desirable to disable right click. If it is all about child protection, then it serves no useful purpose whatsoever. Despite what we read in the press, the majority of child abuse takes place within the family and immediate family circle so it is hard to understand why they would correlate the saving of images of children going about their daily business with any risk.

It might be helpful to get him or her to fully explain what it is that they are actually worried about and perhaps to include some more training in child protection issues.

More child protection training is certainly on our agenda and as we reached a shared understanding that silence is golden and ever more shall be so :) it is unlikely they'd share their concerns with me /accept my feedback on anything - their loss.

    ---------- Post added 19-12-2013 at 21:17 ----------

or just tell them they need further training before they are allowed to contribute to technical projects again.

That's been said - but their lack of humility knows no bounds.

  8. We've got all these safeguards in place thanks; just the technicalities, viability and feasibility of right clicking images which prompted my query here.

Re the so-called advisor, I think they're unlikely to listen to sound advice when it's dished up to them with champagne.

  9. to start with the entire MM extracted folder extracted itself to downloads so where would be a better place to save it, ie the MM file before extracting it and where should I extract it to?

although I've created and saved this .inf file several times (written over itself) i cant see the file anywhere in this extracted mm folder

right clicking on what I think is the MM.inf file opens as a notepad txt file which doesnt have a yellow blob at the beginning of the filename in the address bar.

a search fails to find the .inf file I've created anywhere on this computer and somehow or another after an automatic download and installation of updates, the work I'd done to unblock files without the required digital signature information and am unable to install the driver. Is there anyway I can also prevent that from happening?

    Thanks

    ---------- Post added 22-12-2013 at 14:03 ----------

    Maybe there's some other issue?

such as??? anyhow how can I go about finding where this .inf file has buried itself without rolling back to the restore which was definitely before I installed mm and, I think also 8.1.

    ---------- Post added 23-12-2013 at 11:09 ----------

I found this link for disabling W8.1 signature verification which is a step in resolving this issue for anyone else with similar probs. http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how-to-disable-driver-signature-verification-on-64-bit-windows-8.1-so-that-you-can-install-unsigned-drivers/

  10. Saving it / downloading it doesn't mean it's installed...

Copy all that text to a new text document and name it as I said above... then right click it... Install

Then unplug, and re-plug in the MakeyMakey

Did all that and got nowhere - I'll have another bash and see where that gets me. Really wierd as it should work straight off with W8.1 :(

  11. Thanks for all your advice and suggestions; I'll take a decision on this after finding out more information on the do's & dont's from an appropriately qualified contact.

I didnt know what I didnt know and needed to know so I felt it would be useful to ask for guidance on the tehcnical feasibility from people who were most likely to know.

The person who initiated this query made a comment on the use of photographs of children in schools and is full of their self-importance so I felt it was wiser to check the technical viability of their advice and see where that leads me.

    Nuff said  Tx

If your website is professionally developed and you are paying for their expertise, why aren't you asking them to deal with this request? As others have said, disabling right click would not prevent images being saved anyway. Most modern computers have the snipping tool and if not the equivalent can be obtained as a free download. PrintScreen does the same thing.

I have just checked the NSPCC and Save the Children websites and all the images of children on there are right-clickable so it is clearly not something that is legally required. What exactly is your problem? The whole thing sounds quite odd IMHO.

Never thought of asking them to be honest. Having read everything you guys have posted, I guess they're likely to say the same so there's no point in wasting their time on something that is obviously a time-waster :)

    ---------- Post added 19-12-2013 at 01:27 ----------

Put a faint but visible watermark of your website URL across the middle of the images, people are less likely to want images with other peoples' websites spashed across them because their visitors will know they've nicked them from another website.

It doesn't matter what tricks you use to upload images to a website they can be grabbed easily, a simple print screen and crop in an image editor can get around even the most advanced methods.

Less bothered with copyright issues although that's an issue for professionals - sadly I'm not in that class.

    ---------- Post added 19-12-2013 at 01:28 ----------

Easiest way is to use javascript, associate a right click event handler with image tags and have it return false, also use javascript to load the images after the document is in the browser so if they turn javascript off they don't get the images at all.

This will do what you are asking

But it's completely useless as the images will still be in the browsers cache and be accessible directly, or the user could look at the browser source code and find the image link and download it directly or any of 1001 more inventive solutions, meanwhile you've broken the context menu.

Personally I would suggest you don't show the faces of the children

Way beyond me - got my head whirling around like your avatar in my attempts to just figure that lot out :( but if it's unworkable I guess that's an immediate relief. :)

  12. thanks - it's apparently already installed the MM inf file because that's the message which came up when I saved it. Presumably that means the driver is installed so what's stopping it from working? Tx :(

    ---------- Post added 17-12-2013 at 08:12 ----------

so I've gone to install the driver and got the error message: third party INF does not containn digital signature information and am unable to install the driver what next? :(

  13. It appears that I need to install the MakeyMakey device driver on my computer and this is the code I've found which is essentially gobbledegook to me. Is there anyone who could help me interpret what it means and what I'm supposed to be doing? Thanks

I'm using W8.1 :( and I know they're compatible because a colleague said he'd got it to work on his computer at home :(

  14. Blog with fairly low traffic, funder's newsletters which I guess will be posted on their website and circulated to their mailing list - and ours come to that!

Our website and the funders are both professionally developed,

  15. Whoever told you to disable right clicking will protect children is probably the worst type of idiot.

They know a little, and they think what they know is all there is to it.

Ignore them, and don't let them near your project because they WILL mess it up.

Don't worry they did try and failed cos I'd sussed 'em out and had to let em go.

    ---------- Post added 16-12-2013 at 23:49 ----------

Maybe it is best to just keep your images private, don't share them and don't post them on the Internet.

Certain expectations and all make that a tad difficult but they'll be without any names and un identifiable locations which should be a help and for some reason nothing on FB :confused:

  16. Yeah I know all of that - I need to say I do this to images with children so I need to know how to do it so that I can then do it. :(

    ---------- Post added 15-12-2013 at 08:56 ----------

If someone wants the image they're going to get the image.

You can pull the page source up and get the image link off there, or you can just take a screen shot and make the image up in paint.

If you're worried about people taking your images then it's the image metadata you need to ensure is complete - that way they cannot use it without your permission.

This sounds like what I want to do to comply with safeguarding children policies.
