  1. that's a heck of a lot better than Picassa/Gmail/Flickr But back to the business in hand which is that I want portability for my data and having had a look at these would appreciate your comments/advice. http://www.expansys.com/2-power-adata-ext-640gb-2-5-portable-hard-drive-yellow-205921/205921/ http://www.expansys.com/iomega-ego-helium-hard-drive-500gb-5400rpm-external-silver-usb-2-0-189950/ http://www.expansys.com/iomega-prestige-portable-compact-hard-drive-320gb-usb-2-0-195319/ http://www.expansys.com/toshiba-320gb-store-steel-2-5-portable-hard-drive-194231/ Mega TIA
  2. Although that looks more like what I had in mind, I'm just wondering whether it might not be a bit OTT for my needs as I only have a Desktop (about 6 yrs old) Tablet (about 4 years old) and planning to upgrade to a netbook and laptop shortly. I'll be the sole user, dont have a TV () or entertainment centre although I may well want to listen to music or a film streamed over my computer.
  3. That's an important question. Good idea to start another thread. Hope you get it sorted. So far I havent got this one nailed; I wouldnt buy from PC World, Dixons or Currys and unless London Rd has changed significantly in past few years i wouldnt buy IT kit down there.
  4. Thanks for all the advice so far. To answer some queries, I've generated this file which I've been working on as xxx.doc and now want to upload to a website as a pdf. When I went to save it as a pdf file it became an issue. Thought I'd be able to side step this tech prob by downloading the adobe trial file but hit problems with their partner. Re Cutepdf - doesnt solve the problem as it just means I'm side-tracking from resolving issue with MS Word which cant seem to find pdf file converter although I've reinstalled Word so it should be there. I'll have a bash with the save and send option when I get back home. As this is an urgent deadline, I've gone to my Uni where I should hopefully be able to convert this file to PDF format from within MSWord. But still want to resolve both of these problems Thanks again
  5. Thanks for info so far some issues I need to consider are speed - as already mentioned USB2 is not all that fast; looking for reputable mfr; willing to spread purchase over a couple months; have been looking at Toshiba, Iomega, Lacie. Also want to know whether 500 gb would provide sufficient storage capacity as I tend to shoot about 1000 - 1500 images at least /month plus edited copies in photoshop CS5
  6. just to clarify Office 2010 includes a PDF converter. When I use the save as function I can choose to save the file in various formats such as xxx.doc or xxxx.pdf - and it's the PDF format which Word cant find. So then when I went to adobe for their trial version, the difficulty I then had which is mutually exclusive from the MS issue, is that I then received this message that I dont have permission to save this download in the relevant folder; I received this message whichever folder I selected and/or created.
  7. Thread revival: Looking for current info on external hard drives which need to be portable, lightweight, without breaking the bank.
  8. I have Word 2010 which should, in theory allow me to convert a doc file into a pdf format. Unfortunately Word wont let me do this as the file is apparently not there. I've reinstalled and reauthenticated Word with the same result So then I thought I'd download Adobe Acrobat at this link: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/thankyou_2.0.cfm?product=acrobat_pro&loc=en_gb. Although I am the sole user of this computer with full admin rights, I keep receiving an error message to the effect that I dont have any authority to do so. I have switched off firewalls, popup blockers, anti-virus software without success. Help and advice gratefully and urgently appreciated.
  9. thanks for the suggestion - eventbrite needs integrating into our website and as our mailing list is 1600+ it is unaffordable.
  10. whether they could help us to set up and manage an online event registration for our forthcoming workshop regarding Sheffield's travel policy, carbon emissions and their effect on our health and social well-being. An email template to professional standards has been prepared for us and this with our substantial mailing list would be provided to the person or organisation able to assist. You will need to be registered to handle data under data protection regulations as we collect full contact details: first name, last name, day/eve/mobile numbers, address with postcode, work details including job title, online payments, member, friend and concession rates. We are more than happy to include a strap line in our email, a link to your website with acknowledgements in our publicity material and related reports. Please reply by PM or email - in grateful anticipation of help.
  11. If your former colleague wants to discuss things with you and asks for your support then that's a matter for them to decide but I would leave it to them and otherewise refrain from initiating any action.
  12. As an addendum to the previous post, the Court is apparently obliged to give the defendant in the case the benefit of the doubt. I have seen this personally when the defendant I was prosecuting alleged (ie lied in court) that they had not received any of the court's correspondence. Mysteriously the defendant was able to write a letter on the last working day before the Court deadline and was able to hand deliver it to the Court prior to the deadline simply to excuse their failure to acknowledge any of the court's correspondence including my claim form which they had allegedly not received. Nobody, including the Judge believed the Defendant but there was no option but to give the defendant the benefit of the doubt all the way down the line.
  13. Thanks for the suggestion which we'd thought about but there are a number of questions to ask which is irritating with texting and in any event TMObile's offer includes unlimited texting (subject to fair usage policy essentially about 2000 - 3000 texts I think) so it's not necessary.
  14. I'm looking for the most cost effective way for a charity to update their database of 550 people who only gave their mobile numbers. Assuming each call to a mobile takes c. 5 mins, it will take c. 3000 minutes +/- 250 minutes to call all the mobiles on their database. TMobile’s sim only contract offers 600 minutes @ £20.00 or 900 minutes £25.00 for a 30 day month and seems to be the best value for money on the market but they will only be able to use 250 or 550 minutes depending on the contract because the first 350 minutes are required for other purposes. I’m also evaluating Skype which charges £0.144 ex VAT and £0.166 inc VAT respectively to all UK mobile networks; therefore 1 x 5 min mobile skype call = £0.83 inc VAT; 550 calls x 5 mins @83p/call =£456.50 900 minute sim only mobile contract = £25/month - £15 of SIM contract = £10/month, ie 550 minutes/month with a total cost over 5-6 months for SIM only contract £50 - £60. Are there any better, ie cheaper deals for calling mobile phones? Thanks in anticipation of your help.
  15. If it's not in writing forget about it because they will lie about what was or wasnt said. The Judge may also turn a deaf ear to things. Best to get representation if at all possible and never ever speak with these characters on the phone. Always write preferably by fax or recorded delivery and not by email which they tend to ignore or treat less seriously unless it suits them.
  16. There was something on Radio 4 about financial institutions using this method to transfer an unsecured loan to a secured loan on your home which could result in their being able to obtain a charge against your home and ultimately a suspended possession order or possession order in the event of default. Best advise is to apply for an adjournment based on your need to get legal advice and hop down to the CAB or somewhere similar pdq.
  17. Havent got time to read the whole thread and/or whether the issue has been addressed but I think that Netto may well be seen to be have acted irresponsibly and/or negligently. In my opinion if the pain persists and the 86 year old gentleman is suffering as a result then he should at least see a solicitor to see whether it is worth while making a claim.
  18. http://www.megatrain.com or at the booking office which is invariably cheaper than the remaining online provisions.
  19. that's good news. any particular recommendations - there seems to be quite a bit of debate around linksys, netgear and various others.
  20. reviving this topic because things have moved on since first posting and would like advice recommendations on current netbooks. Thanks in advance for advice/suggestions.
  21. I need to buy a decent wireless router and as I'm confused by all the technology I'd like recommendations of one which will see me through for the next 2-3 years. Thanks in advance.
  22. I'll take it back to John lewis and see whether they can sort it out. Expensive as this wretched device was, buying a new one may be cheaper than getting the spare part and having it fitted.
  23. yeah it was an expensive model bosch and probably not even 6 years old
