  1. hi Helbco log on to NA. click documents on line, click ww1 campaign medals, click the underlined search, fill in first name fields etc, or better still do a quick search with just the army No, less is more at the NA, go through these results untill you find your man, click details, click add to shopping then follow the instruction for payments. you will get 6 different cards as 6 were copied onto one page. SDGW # Soldiers Died Great War, compiled by His Majestys Stationary Office from regimental records and published in 1921. this gives where born, enlisted etc. the company Naval and Military Press put these records onto a CDROM, which is searchable by Name,No,Date,Regiment etc. there is also a section on Officers Died. it costs about £350.00 to buy ! but there is a copy in the sports library at sheffield city library. be aware that there are many typo errors. CWGC # commonwealth war graves commission, all next of kin of soldiers killed were sent a Final Verification Form, which they filled in with address, age etc of the casualty. it is patchy but you should be able to get extra info on your relative. you will also find out where your relative is buried or commenorated. Army service record/Atestation papers # over 70% of these records were destroyed in 1940 in London by the german blitz. what is left are called the Burnt Series and the Unburnt Series, if you find your relatives papers intact and legible then you are very luck indeed. if they have survived they will give you your relatives every move during the war, plus loads of personal details. these papers are at the NA in London so you have to go in person or hire a researcher. 1910 census. there are lots more avenues to search, but this will get you so much. Hope its of help to anybody else Dean
  2. if you did not wish to get in to an argument with me why reply to my post? i have come on this forum just saying things as they are it is you that has replied to my post with negativity. i know what you said about the contractors and if you would have read my posts i was on about them too. but you came on here stating that you were trained for your work! i never called you a liar i merely stated my opinion from the experiences that i have had............. you do not want to get into an argument with me? i dont do pseudo intellectual arguments as well i deal in facts. and what i have stated on all my posts is fact. this is my problem with sheffield homes you cannot get anywhere with them! you are just forever banging your head against a brick wall with them! ( if you can get the bricklayers to arrive on time as promised)! i am now going to leave this thread and will not answer anything else you have got to say. i will direct anymore of my complaints to my local mp. even though my complaints were not exactly directed at you in the first place! it was you who decided to include yourself in this thread. bye bye your boring me now if anybody else would like to pass on their experiences regarding sheffield homes i would like to hear them. maybe we should all get together and get our complaints across as one big unit and see what their answers are then!
  3. hi tonks&heffs how did i know that you worked for sheffield homes! i never said you was from the job centre claiming benefits! so if you are a trained worker what exactly are you trained in? joinery, plumbing, electrician, roofer, plasterer, window fitter, brick layer, customer liason? cause if you are any of the above come round and sort my house out! of course you are sticking up for sheffield homes! you work there and are getting paid to work there you are hardly going to pull your employers down online are you? stop the hand wringing. have the contractors who have bodged up my house been dealt with? have the contactors in 2006 been dealt with? 2005 dealt with? 2004 dealt with? 2003? 2002? 2001? 2000 on the arbourthorne? if you do not take calls how do you know they are being dealt with? you cannot assure me that customer satisfaction is number 1 priority! i can assure you it is not because i have been on the receiving end. you say your colleagues number 1 priority is doing things asap? do you want me to list the times i haved asked for things to be done asap and i have been ignored, forgotten, left waiting etc etc etc! so if this was your house and things were not done to the best standard what would you do? who would you blame? who would you complain to? would you expect dust sheets to be used when you was having plastering done in your house? etc etc etc! i was not accusing you of calling me a second class citizen that is just the way the council make you feel. i am not clicking my fingers and expecting the council to produce magic! i am expecting work that they have got grants to do to be done properly. this work is not being done free to me i have already had my rent increased cause of the work i have had done, why should we be paying for this anyway when this was free money given to the council from central government to improve housing stock? "all the funding given for decent homes needs to be spread out between every council home" how fair is this system? some houses get off street parking, nicer walls, nicer railings etc etc. plus if they chose to buy this adds more value to their home as opposed to those without these adornments? how can people take advantage of this? dont the decent homes decide what money is spent and where? you state that sheffield homes try their best! should they not be the best? donna
  4. this is what i think too mary123. these people are not trained workers. if they were there would not be all the complaints regarding bodged up work.
  5. hi tonks&heffs customer satisfaction is definately not their no 1 priority. i work in customer services and know all about giving good customer service and acheiving customer satisfaction and sheffield homes does not do that. the times that i have spent on the phone chasing up problem after problem and being spoke to like a piece of s**t and spoke over and spoke to condescendingly. as for the contractors well they are just a bunch of cowboys. there are so many complaints regarding the contractors and the work they have done. tell me why are sheffield home still using them if customer satisfaction is their main priority? as for the flooring i am passed complaining about it as nothing is ever done. if this was your home and you was having work done would you not want the best standard? i am not a second class citizen just cause i live in a council house. are you a shareholder or do you work for sheffie;d homes? thanks donna
  6. hi just seen a thread on here that was running in january and just wanted to add my twopeneth' s worth. we moved into our house october 2005 the house was semi derelict and not been modernised since it was built! we took the house as we were promised faithfully by sheffield homes that the decent homes modernisation was being done the following year around april - october. we were paying full rent on this house and council tax and got a 1 weeks rebate for decorating! the floor in the living room was of concrete and looked like a crazy paving driveway that was erupting! i found sheffield homes and somebody came round and told us that the floor was ok and level, so we had somebody else come round who condemned the floor and issued work to be done for a new floor! this was major work. they dug down 4 ft and filled 2 10ton skips. we had to live upstairs for 2 weeks while this work was carried out, bearing in mind our house is unmodernised and the only toilet we have is downstairs. all the while paying full rent! so if you needed the toilet you had to come downstairs and walk on scaffold boards across a 4ft abyss! after they have finished our floor - guess what? the floor is now breaking up again! by this time we got round to april and i phoned sheffield homes again to ask when the windows would be in. i was promised faithfully again that they would be in by october 2006. October came around and still no builders came so i phoned again and was promised your windows will definately be in before christmas, christmas came and went and the windows and doors were finally put in, in january now we are in april and i am still waiting for a new front door as the one that they fitted did not fit! the men who fitted the doors and windows, the plasterers who came and tried to patch up the bodge jobs that the fitters had done, the supervisors and the cla at mears are all cowboys. my house is still a mess! it still looks like a building site, but can not do anything till they have been to put in kitchens etc. also had to complain to them that we still have lead pipes in our house that are still in use. got told by a cocky t**t at sheffield homes that everybody has lead pipes in their house. threatened to take them to the Sheffield star then i got a phone call to say we will be removing your lead pipes in july when we come to do the rest of your works. they were not doing new central heating in our home until i threatened them with the star. sheffield decent homes i for one can tell you i am sick of them.

  8. hi xxxxxx66 sorry wednesdayite, cant bring myself to type that word!! only jesting! cant remember tha sandwich shop but remember the wash house. it was a 'Bendix' wasn't it? Dean
  9. hi hughw thanks for your reply and thoughts im using SDGW as a starting point to this study as it is very easy to get a lot of information very quickly. im also aware there are a lot of errors on SDGW. as i have said this will be an evolving work in progress for years to come. there are many groups and individuals in the city researching individual men, area memorials etc.this study is one step on, although a massive one!! i dont want to exclude anyone from the study, it is just the mechanics and the size of the study facing me that i thought id start with sheffield born first. if anyone sends me any information on any soldier from ww1 with a sheffield connection it will be saved for probable inclusion later. hope this clears up any of your misgivings hughw. regards Dean

  13. hi Red thanks for your reply and thoughts i have given myself until 2014, to coincide with the start of ww1, to finnish? the project. although im sure it will be a work in progress for years to come what with errors and new information etc. my intention is to hand over the results to local studies or any other interested organisation, for future generations. Re funding, the first stop in researching a soldier is their Medal Index Card, downloadable from National Archives, But these are £3.50 a pop! so for the 5000 men i have already thats £17,500 !! any wealthy forumers out there? Re geographical boundaries, Born in the recognised boundaries of sheffield at the outbreak of war. If any forumers could provide me with a list or map of the areas of sheffield at that time it would be very welcome. Re chronological boundaries, if the war contributed to any ones demise in any way then i think they should be included. Red, your the sort of person/group im looking for. getting the basics is quite easy, its putting a face or a letter etc to these men that is the challenge. thanks again Dean
  14. hi all this is a biggy! i have 3 long term projects on the go at the minute. the war history of my great grand father, L/cpl 53521 Albert Dale, 2nd Bn york and Lancs, KIA 18/9/18 this is a 7 yr work in progress but about 99% complete. just need a photo of him. L/cpl 6012 George William Redfearn Glossop, KOYLI KIA 18/4/15. he was my mothers grand mothers first husband. i have just started on george. and then this one! this is really long term im am going to try and attempt to list and chronicle every sheffield born man/woman who died in the great war, or died later as a result of wounds gas etc. thats the army, navy and flying corps. i will be after name, rank,No, age, where lived, where died and buried, photos, jobs they did before war, etc etc. everything and anything on these men and women. i already have basis details on about 5000 men at present. i am aware of the sheffield roll of honor, but this included men domeciled or working in sheffield, i am after men born in sheffield. i have also trawled the SDGW cd and CWGC. also looking for any works memorial plaques around sheffield. am aware of a few of these already and have got the details off them. i know this is a massive request forumers but these men need remembering and there isn't one comprehensive data bank in this city i know of. re photographs, papers, letters etc, - i am not asking for any originals, just copies. they are yours and priceless. many thanks in advance Dean ps. if this takes off i will leave the thread running and post replies as they build up.
