  1. Hi rob-s, so do you not have your own website?
  2. We have a budget of up to £650 We're after coverage of the ceremony through to the first dance. Extending that to coverage of getting ready in the morning would be nice but not required. Personally we're not interested in a pre-engagement shoot or album - we'd like the images on disc or usb. We do want a good quality photographer and do have a couple in mind but would like recommendations. The wedding will be in either Sheffield / Chesterfield Thanks!
  3. It's one of the Sheffield University venues. http://www.sheffield-weddings.co.uk/venues/the-ridge I've been looking at this and also The Edge, are they just reception venues or can you hold the ceremony there? They're not on the list of 'Wedding and civil partnership approved venues in Sheffield'
  4. I'm trying to get some ideas for my younger sister. She's just about to finish her GCSEs and is looking for a job and/or volunteering opportunity but isn't having much luck with dropping off CV's. If anyone knows of anywhere that are specifically looking for someone over summer could you post a reply on here. Or if anyone knows of anywhere that regularly takes on volunteers over summer that would be great. I think she's willing to do most things so the more ideas the better.
  5. I'm in no rush. That was pretty much my plan, get to know the person and the dog first. If it pulls on the lead that shouldn't be too hard to fix tbh. But yes I'd want to know a little bit more if they want to take me up on my offer. Then I'll take it from there, it was the legal side I had no clue about.
  6. Well literally I saw an advert at the local shop saying there was a young akita for sale due to illness. So I'm still waiting for details, but pretty much I've asked if it's going to be a long term thing and if it's just a short term illness (less than 6 months) I said I'd be more than willing to walk the dog for them for free. But I just wanted to double check what my offer would mean legally speaking. I thought there was a 'loop hole' if I didn't take payment. But wasn't sure. It's that whole "No good deed goes un punished thing". I'd love to help them out, but I don't want it coming back to bite me *no pun intended*
  7. I was wondering if someone could help. I've offered to walk someones dog free of charge whilst they're going through a period of illness (to avoid them having to rehome). Do I still need insurance, or can I walk the dog under any insurance they might have? Or rather can I ask them to insure the dog and then me walk it under that insurance?
  8. Looks like you guys were right, his sister had probably jabbed him in the eye cause it was looking better by 10pm last night and I've had a look today and you can barely see any difference to the good eye. Thanks again.
  9. Okies, thanks for that. Can't believe we only brought them home from cats protection 4 days ago and one of them already managed to pick up/contract something. lol. Fingers crossed he gets better by tomorrow.
  10. He's perfectly fine in himself other than that yes. Normal adorable kitten behaviour (tearing up and down the room at stupid AM chasing his sister to name just one example -_-) But yes ok, I'll grab some cotton wool whilst I'm out. How often should I be cleaning it? He's going to love me... we'd only just made friends. They came from a litter with a feral mum, didn't see humans till they were 3 weeks old so can still be a tad jumpy.
  11. Hi, One of our new kittens has conjunctivitis. He has literally gone from normal to a pink eye in the past 5-6 hours (see pic) This is the first time I've had kittens for quite some time. I'm not sure if I should be booking him straight into the vets, waiting, or looking at washing his eye out myself. Any advice appreciated. His sister is currently fine (incase that helps) ---------- Post added 16-07-2013 at 16:09 ---------- Oh and I know at first glance it looks like I'm strangling him, I'm really not. I only have one hand under his chin and was just tilting it upwards for the camera, not holding him tightly at all.
  12. I'd suggest http://www.fishforums.net - great active fish forum with lots of members and a specific marine section. I don't keep marines myself but that tank definitely sounds too small for tangs (off the top of my head). I wouldn't know about clowns or puffers though.
  13. I think you've misunderstood me. If you read my post again I was saying if there are bubbles coming out/it's noisy then there could be trapped air in it. What type of filter is it? You said you couldn't afford a new one so surely you know how much a replacement is? I can't tell you that without knowing your tank size and/or filter model. Ebay is your best bet if money is tight as second hand is always cheaper.
  14. Is it doing anything other than making a noise ie. blowing bubbles? Often trapped air makes a alot of noise but is very simple to fix. It wont always spit bubbles but you should definitely try to work out if it's trapped air. However you definitely can't turn it off. If you turn it off then you will expose the fish to ammonia poisoning. You might not be able to afford a brand new one but if you check out ebay there are sometimes some really cheap filters going. If you do buy a new one be sure to transfer all of your current filter media over into the new one.
  15. You could try http://www.aquarist-classifieds.co.uk to sell them.
  16. I think it's a case of maybe mis conceptions and a lack of thinking ahead. Alot of people still get pets without considering it as a life long commitment. Everyone thinks about puppies/kittens and toilet training etc. Not many people think about the incontinent senial OAP that you might have at the other end of life. I would never judge anyone for thinking they wouldn't be able to cope and giving over a pet cause they genuinely believe it's the best thing for the pet. But it is definitely still annoying... if you know you're looking after a pet for 14 years... if you're a grown adult without children then chances are they're going to arrive at some point during the animals life... it's not a massive stretch. The people that really annoy me are the ones that give pets up for adoption. Then a year or so later go out and get a brand new pet, often pups/kittens (ie. the hardest possible age to look after with a busy life)
  17. That's a shame. I thought she'd begun to see no one was trying to victimise her... and that people were only really bothered about giving the 'most' correct information. Ie. Be aware most huskies wouldn't be safe off lead and that it's not just about small furries. It's about that selective deafness huskies get that can end up with them running infront of a car. Ie. Most kittens wont be ready at 6 weeks etc. Oh well. To maggy-moo (if you're following this thread still). I've seen how people get a bit full on on this forum. But their hearts are all in the right place. And it's not about saying you're a bad person or telling you what to do. Lots of animal sales go on in this forum and things like imposing a min age etc and making people aware of all the facts (even though there will be exceptions like in the case of huskies on/off lead) is the best thing for all new pet owners. I regularly used to give advice on fish forums. I'd read and experienced enough to know there were always exceptions to the rules. But I still only gave advice that I knew was going to lead to the best outcome the majority of the time. Even if that meant being a bit conservative sometimes.
  18. It'd be an easy way to deal with people in a cut n dry fashion maybe? Your dog did something wrong/you aren't caring for them adequately... but they aren't chipped so that could be the reason they'd remove a dog... I don't know... I think that dog owners getting together to discuss the positives and negatives then forming it into a letter like strix said is a good idea. I just don't think that a list of negatives (with no solutions or positives) is the best approach. Which is where it looked like this thread was going.
  19. No need for capitals... But I'd hope that people who make laws would think of that and have a plan. I assumed you'd get a receipt/certificate with all the info on aswell. That way you can proove that your dog was chipped and that the chip has failed by cross referencing your reciept/certificate with a central database. But having only ever had dogs in the family I've never been the one to get one chipped. I figured it'd have some basic description attached to the chip? Things like the dogs colour, sex and vets it was done at including the date. That should be sufficient proof. With just those few bits of info and the fact it should have your name and address attached it'd be sufficient proof. But aside from that... why would anyone be scanning my dog unless I was at the vets, it'd been stolen/got lost, had attacked someone or was out of control or I'd been reported to the RSPCA.
  20. If it was a cash generator... and the cash was put into the police force and/or animal charities I wouldn't have a problem with it. Like everyone has said, they only costs that will be incurred by law abiding people are the one off chipping fees.
  21. I can see why people are saying how it's not going to be effective. But at the same time; Everytime one of these dogs is brought in for whatever reason they'll be scanned. If someone is reported for neglecting their dogs or reported for being a bad 'back yard' breeder. Perhaps it'll give the RSPCA and police more power in trying to deal with them? Also if it's made very public then some people will be less likely to buy the pups from irresponsible breeders who are churning them out. Yes it'll only be the law abiding ones, but it could help. I get that it wont do what they are saying they want it to do. And that it's another piece of legislation for good owners/people who work with dogs to follow. But unless anyone can come up with a better idea then I can see how it could work in the long term if they brought in additional legislation that was say... £1000 fine for owning an unchipped dog over the age of... 6months (or whatever age most can be chipped/can be bred)? They just need the right incentives to get people to get their dogs chipped. A fine before the dog can be bred if they're found out is an incentive for the breeders and owners. And a fine that can cover some of the costs of policing it would help on that side of things. Edited to add: If it is literally that they're bringing in compulsary chipping and that's it. Ie. no fines and no additional powers for the police and RSPCA with respect to the legislation then it really is a waste of time.
  22. @The OP - Forgot the mention to make sure there is plenty of surface agitation by the filter/pump at night/when the lights are off cause you need to keep the oxygen levels up. @Stingray-man - Because the main cause of green water is different to the main cause of algae which is attached to rocks and glass etc. The main cause of green water is excess ammonia/imbalance of nutrients combined with the light. Normally without the excess ammonia/nutrients you can't have green water regardless of the amount of light (unless it's literally in a south facing conservatory or you've stuck ridiculous lights over the top). If you have a fully cycled tank with reasonable nitrates then lots of light tends to give outbreaks of different types of algae to the type which creates green water. But my specific reasons were: Anyone who doesn't give you all the information you need (ie. that it could be ammonia and/or light) should probably be ignored. Anyone who suggests buying more fish is the answer when you have some sort of issue in your tank should probably be ignored. Even more so if they don't know what size tank it is or the current inhabitants. Also... bristlenoses to clear green water... Just so the people I diregarded know. I wasn't trying to be rude. I just didn't have time to give a full explanation as to why the information given should be disregarded. And these are living animals, which are likely to be being exposed to ammonia right now. And even if they aren't could easily die from lack of oxygen at night if the problem isn't resolved.
  23. Please ignore hound&house and robertathome. Little tank is asking the right questions though. I can tell you that the most likely cause is free ammonia and light which has led to a free floating algal bloom. Does it remind you of pea soup? http://www.aquaticscape.com/articles/algae.htm Check that site out and look at the green water picture. We definitely need more information to really help. But the most basic advice would be to first do at least 2 50% water changes. Also don't turn the tank light on. The fish wont mind being in the dark. If there is any direct natural light getting into the tank then consider sticky taping black plastic bags around the sides where the light is getting in. Then take a sample of water down to your local fish shop (if they do water testing), and ask them to test for ammonia and nitrites. Or alternatively go to your local fish shop and buy yourself a testing kit (API master test kit is my personal favourite). Then check out what your ammonia and nitrite levels are. Although it may be hard to work it out with the water being green already so I'd be tempted to keep doing water changes until the water was clear, then to leave it for 12 hours or so and test the ammonia and nitrite levels then. I'd also highly recommend reading these 3 articles: What is cycling The nitrogen cycle Fish-in cycling I'd also suggest joining the forum those articles are on http://www.fishforums.net It's a great active forum for fishkeepers. There are people from all over the world so you can get responses 24/7 and because it's for fishkeepers you're likely to get the best possible advice.
  24. I think you're affording these kids alot more awareness than they probably have...yes as they grow up if they see friends/family taking a flippant attitude to dog care then they'll probably pick up on it and see it as acceptable. But if they really were 8-10 then like everyone said... they're just being kids. At the moment poop is funny. Also they're in an unsupervised group so they'll likely be showing off to eachother. You can't reason with kids...cause kids are kids. They genuinely don't see the world like an adult does so trying to talk to them without an adult there wont work. Move on and forget about them. Don't take their comments the same way you would an adults. They'd probably forgotten about you as soon as you went out of sight.
  25. Although I agree it might be 'unethical' to breed rabbits. If they are a relatively rare species I can see why someone might want to breed them if they have a waiting list. However like you said blueknees82, if you'd be likely to keep them all yourself then why not adopt some extra bunnies from a rescue? You could expand on the number of bunnies you have without risking adding to the rescue problems. Might be a good idea depending on what it is you want from breeding them?
