  1. I've never lived on a new build estate but I have looked at houses on them once or twice over the last 20 years. Doing this I definitely came to realise that for some time after we would be living on a developing estate or building site. This is the reason I've always preferred established areas. I suspect the builders will say that they assumed you would be aware of this. My advice would be to try and make friends with the builders, they may even give your kids a sit in the JCB etc.. Given what you say it sounds like it will be complete by the summer and you'll then be able to enjoy the garden, park and having the windows open. Please try not to let this marr your first house experience.
  2. I've got one for over a year now. I wouldn't have another because although it reduces the number of visits they make to check readings etc.. its now often more difficult to take a reading myself. The panel on it is dark and not intuitive to actually get it to display the reading. They supply a little remote unit however this often suffers interference so is not always working.N Power diagnosed the interference was caused by my tool box sitting next to the meter in the cupboard under the stairs!!The tool box has been there for 20 years, they should have identified this in their pre-installation survey.
  3. There is the castle half way down twentywell lane on the left hand side. The food is usually good and it seems popular with those having a drink. Not sure if the old mother redcap is still open. Close to bradway is the Angel at holmesfield which has great food and good beer.
  4. My mum has a cake called something like a "Japs eye", coming back from the Hallamshire recently I got her one from the bakers opposite Ecclesall Church. I think its called Roses, they also make nice bread,
  5. Hi Can anyone recommend a cctv specialist to come out and do a quote? Over the end of last week have had 2 precious bikes and tools stolen. Ideally want to get something sorted asap. I also need someone to make repairs to a security gate etc.. Thanks in advance.
  6. Absolutely agree Dan people shouldn't expect to take something for free. Earn the money then pay for what you want/need.
  7. The church magazine says next, m&s food, aldi, tk maxx, homesense, wilkos, mountain warehouse, card factory and costa. Work to start in FEB17 and to open at the start of 2018.
  8. There was an article in the recent Norton church news which is delivered door to door saying there would be an M&S food hall and an Aldi. Great news!
  9. Great shame. Have been to a few last night of the proms concerts and was surprised when there wasn't one last year.
  10. Someone should start a taxi share type system, as sgtkate says short taxi trips are only marginally more expensive. I bet the taxi drivers would have the right cash or take contactless. Also a bit of competition is healthy for all. I was in India last year when they did the demonetisation, small traders very quickly got contactless payment systems in place. If they hadn't they wouldn't survive as there were very little small change notes in the money supply system. The bus companies need to adapt quickly.
  11. Hi Any recommendations for a nice chinese restaurant for this saturday? Either in Sheffield or Derbyshire. Thanks
  12. Thank you I'll take a close look at these and ask the seller what their IP rating is.
  13. Well done. I think this is a good life skill to learn to do yourself. My advice is to stay on top of maintenance and any repairs, ideally before they become an issue. When you go round cleaning each room be aware of what might need work (e.g. are any of the double glazing units blown - i seem to get one a year and it costs approx £20 for a replacement, can you hear anything odd (water leaks/drips, buzzing), seals needing replacement, lock/hinge lubrication, batteries). Make sure you get your CH serviced regularly. Don't ignore outside (e.g. painting, repointing, guttering, flat roofs, keeping drains clear). Rather than pay someone to do all this for you why not save that money each month and then set it aside for when things are needed? If you were to save £200 per month then you'd soon have enough to deal with the big and small stuff. Be proactive. If you can and want to do some stuff yourself. There are plenty of videos on youtube. Be firm but polite and respectful with trades people you need. Develop a relationship with them so that if you do have an emergency then they're prepared to help you. I generally get the best results when I treat someone how i like to be treated. I always make sure I've got a gas CH person, plumber and property maintainer on hand. Hope this helps. Don't be daunted by this but treat it as an opportunity to learn.
  14. I polished the chrome surround up with autosol metal polish then applied some briwax, this smartened them up. I'm now wanting to redecorate so have decided to have them replaced, I know this has to be done by an electrician. I've checked and the cut out is 85mm which seems bigger than the current ones screwfix etc.. sell. Anyone know if they're still available in Sheffield (IP65, mains, preferably LED) also will need an electrician to fit them? Thanks
  15. The bus companies should be the same as the majority of shops and TFL where you can pay by contactless. I'm the same as the person (haddy) who said they rarely use the bus in Sheffield, if I get a bus I don't know the fare so I might have £2 in change but beyond that it will be a £10 or £20. Poor service (i.e. regularly not having change) would make me less inclined to use buses in the future, which ultimately could lead to fewer buses and bus drivers, but more walking/cycling/car journeys. Also the way people are spending money is changing. A few years ago someone would have got change (for the bus etc) when they bought a coffee/sandwich/beer etc.. these days more and more people use cards so there are fewer opportunities to get change.
  16. Thanks very much Hillsboro. I'll dig the photo out and try and post it on picturesheffield.
  17. My grandad did. He lived at no25 in 1928 when he got married. I've got a photo which I think might have been this road. Does anyone know if it was quite a steep road?
  18. I really enjoyed watching all the old bikes on the trail. I got some good go pro footage. Every now and again I'd see a bike similar one to one I used to have and think why didn't I keep them. Ones I remember Raleigh Royal (1982/3), Mercian, Bob Jackson, Holdsworth, Viscount Aerospace Sport, Raleigh Lenton. My old Vernon Barker is 20 years old next year but looking at the current rules it won't meet the criteria in 2027 unless they allow clipless pedals and integrated brake/gear levers I'm looking forward to going to watch it again this year.
  19. I went to Eroica this year. I cycled in but didn't do the ride because my bike is not quite old enough. There was some good information but it was very very muddy. In the past I've been to the old York Rally many times and on reflection I'd say York was better. I've done the Ron Kitching / Phill Liggett rides from their. Having said that it really depends on the weather. If Eroica hadn't been muddy then it would have all been accessible.
  20. I agree about the one on Ecclesall Road, I also use this one to collect clothing orders. I'm surprised Chesterfield has not been mentioned in the list.
  21. Have all the street lights gone as well? If so it must be a lot better to the see the super moon tonight which is now looking really clear.
  22. I did this using some old dogs (which are kind of a big staple which draws the wood together) on the corners. Mine were about 3 inches long and an inch deep. I inherited quite a few from my granddad who was a pattern make, similar to this http://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+woodworking-hand-tools-clamps-vices-panel-clamps-pull-together-pinch-dogs-dakota+dkpd
  23. You're right it probably isn't strictly Avons responsibility, it would be good if there was something similar to the telephone preference service which reps could look up to see who'd said no to brochures etc.. Back to the original poster - have you considered selling on the likes of Ebay, perhaps turning a hobby into a small business, or even offering to pack parcels for someone with an Ebay business?
  24. It's Avons responsibility which as I see they fail to take. So after 10 years plus of calling them to let them know I don't want it I simply put it straight in the blue bin.
