  1. Old Thread. New post. On jobs from a young age, 16 to 21, in my case....(and I've probably missed 2 or 3 that I've forgotten!) From memory...1976 - 1981.... 1976 - Morning, evening and weekend paper rounds, around Firs Hill, Fir Vale, Norwood, Barnsley Road.. 1976 - 78 First proper p/t job, after school and Saturdays, shelf filler/warehouse at Presto Supermarket on Pond Street, first wage was between ยฃ7 & ยฃ11, I thought I was a Millionaire! 1978, left school, stayed at Presto full time for a while. Left... went to work at Richards Cutlery on Moore Street, cleaning Mickey Mouse scissors in a machine! Left and went the next week to work on a lathe machine at Ernest H.Hill on Eldon Street for a few months, got fed up, left and started 1978 -79 in warehouse and delivery at R.H.Robinsons on Wincobank, stayed around a year or so, Left and went on a short summer season at Butlins Skeggy, working in the bar, didn't stay long. Did some Industrial cleaning work, p,t at BSC Tinsley Park and BSC Stocksbridge at week-ends. 1980, got a brief part-time barman/glass collector job at Nursery Tavern, Eccleshall Road...then left and went to work for a guy called Richard, landscape and maintenance gardening, in South Sheffield and Worksop. Got laid off around October 1980 and went to work for Sheffield Parks Department as Gardener at Meersbrook Park and Earl Marshal Park...left in 1981 and went to work full-time at Challenge Supermarket, one of the best jobs that I had. After that I gave in, for a while and went to Polytechnic to study a HND... Them wer days. (Thanks to O.P.)
  2. Old thread. New post.... Thanks Spudgun. My paper round, Star/Green Un and Sunday papers, was on Fir Vale/Barnsley Road and Firs Hill estate, working out of a Newsagent/grocers shop called Marshalls, on Barnsley Road. Can't remember now how much I earned, but it seemed like loads at the time, if you consider I'd only have been 14 or 15 I suppose?
  3. That would be good, Yasmin. I'm sure there are loads of proud, born and bred, clean living Sheffield folk in Jordanthorpe who would love to help. Why not check the KBT and local litter pickers websites and share the info? Good luck. Thanks.
  4. Old Thread. New Post.... Thanks OP, for the memory...and the classic quotes above.๐Ÿ˜‚. Getting on nearly 40 years since now and they're still talking (and singing) about it. I still remember it like it was yesterday. Great for me, the whole day through, walk down to the match with the mates, had a season ticket for the North Stand that season, so great view of the Kop and rest of the ground, rammed full to the rafters, Terrific atmosphere all round...and an amazing game start to finish, Mellor's legendary scorcher, Curran, King, Smithy, GET IN! Rushed home and out again, to the Bay Horse in Pitsmoor and drank a few beers and brandy, just for the ocassion. It was more than well worth the hangover of the following morning and the hoarse voice from chanting and singing and drinking. Still one of the best days of my life, in a footballing sense anyway....still got those old b/w Star photos of the match, the scarf, lucky Wednesday shirt, the programme and even that empty Brandy bottle! Good old Jackie Charlton, eh? what a season.
  5. Old thread. New post.... Don't remember if it was at Radio Sheffield, or the then Top Rank, which sometimes had stars there on a Saturday morning, doing guest appearances, (suppose it could have been both?), but I met 2 or 3 of Pans People in 1974 & saw Alvin Stardust, at the Top Rank,in 1972, which was the first 'gig' that I went to.
  6. Did anyone ever hear of this group/band? Someone thought they played at the Sheffield Limit Club, West Street in 1978, Anyone remember them? were they local, UK or International? (Thanks).
  7. Seems to me that you are probably right, in that respect. It wasn't obvious though, as I went with a mate who had some tickets, and I obviously had nothing better to do. If I hadn't have gone, I wouldn't have known how crap they were, (live, leastways). Glad you enjoyed it though. btw, never heard of either the Groundhogs or Ten Years after so cannot say if they were/are good, or not.!
  8. Old thread. NEW Post. I didn't see the 1974 Faust thing, but definately the WORST City Hall gig I went to, would've been Hall and Oates, late 1970's maybe 1980. Hated it.... and to compare, It was even worse than the Bay City Rollers gig, which I went to, on the Balcony, to look after my little sister, who was about 10! Couldn't hear for the screaming....and, as for the audience.!
  9. OLD Thread. NEW Post... GREAT STUFF on here. Good old Nostalgia....been great reading all this stuff, and a reyt laugh. I had me green/yellow star jumper, Harringtons flares and a Brian Connolly haircut and, at age 13 and 14 used to go down town on Saturday mornings to the Top Rank disco, all that "Mud" type dancing...and the Hi Ho, singing contest, Owls and Blades, then after we'd go down to redgates, for Airfix or Subbuteo. Later during the week I'd go down town on the bus with a small teen gang to the City Hall...and hang out around there when groups were on. Someone, one of the older, "Bowie" hairdo kids, I think, showed us how to, err, sort of sneak in sometimes...after the shows had started, so we got to see, the likes of 10.C.C, Queen, Dr. Feelgood, the excellent Be-Bop Deluxe, Sensational Alex Harvey Band and Pilot(ha,ha), without paying, which was great, when you were only 13 or 14 and had hardly any money at all! A lot of the time, you would be chased back down the stairs by "bouncers" and out, but, most of the time, we'd go round the other side...and just try again. Naughty stuff I know...!, but it was all a good laugh back in those days and truly innocent. Later, when I got a paper job, I saved up and bought tickets, mostly for the balcony, to go and see the likes of T-Rex, Slade and Sweet. Them wer days. Brilliant. Thanks to the OP.
  10. Old thread, New post. Best ROCK gigs at The City Hall I saw, would have been Queen, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, (Dr. Feelgood) and Sweet....all were in the early to mid 1970's. Noisy and sometimes rowdy, but good old Heavy rock music.
  11. On 12/02/2019 at 10:26, philyyy said: The Keep Britain Tidy campaign is running their annual Spring Clean from the 22nd of March to the 23rd of April 2019 and as part of The Sheffield Litter Pickers group we are trying to piggy back onto this and ask everyone to pick at least 20 pieces of litter during that time. Ideally 20 pieces every day, as there's more than enough to go round. Please join in, share etc. Before anyone says it's the council's job I agree but it isn't getting done and some areas in this city are a disgrace. If we wait for the council we might drown in it. https://www.keepbritaintidy.org/get-involved/support-our-campaigns/great-british-spring-clean Please do keep on posting the information of the upcoming events and how and where Local Sheffield people can help to clean and clear the City that they live in. I'm sure there are DROVES of PROUD Sheffield born and bred Forumers out there, just itching to turn off their TV's and put down their pints 2 minutes, to help and to have a City to be truly proud of. Well done,Sheffield Litter Pickers Group and keep up the good work and the awareness campaigns. GOOD ON YOU. Thankyou.
  12. Good idea. Good luck with it all. Good on yer. Thankyou.
  13. I've seen a fair few of these on You Tube now. Excellent. Puts a lot of work and time into his one man operation. It's a combination of DIY, Urbexing, exploring and assorted Wild campings. Good stuff and I learned so much that I never knew, given how I've spent practically all my life in and around Sheffield Think this bloke is great, though a bit crackers, in a nice, Sheffield sort of way. Good on him though and hat off to him as I don't think I'd have the guts to do the River Runs. Prefer the wild camping stuff meself. Thanks to OP.
  14. Sheffielder. TOP Goalkeeper. R.I.P. Thankyou, Banksy.
  15. Thankyou for this, Speedy. Great memories of a Legendary period for the Owls.
  16. Old thread here.....some Oldies on Sheffield Forum.! In my day I saw a lot of bands, Good, Bad and Ugly at the Top Rank/Roxy's, notably, The Skids, with Bill Nelson as guest on encore, Buzzcocks in October 1978 when support "Joy Division", Blew them off stage!! and Culture, Joseph Hill and all. Legendary stuff.
  17. Hello, Roger. Thankyou for the post. I've read most of the blog and found it of some interest. I vaguely remember going to the (Firth Park) "Cabaret" performance at the SUDS one night, way back when....but I couldn't have remembered who was in it - or what the heck it was about. Anyhow, it turned out, 30 years or so later, I turned up a Vinyl LP copy of the Firth Park School, Cabaret performance - in my records collection. I managed to contact one of the names who was on the sleeve credits(It wasn't John Jackson,)...and asked how many LPs they had made...etc. I think he said either 500 or 1,000. Anyway, it turns out, or appears, that it is NOT yet a collector's item...and I still have the vinyl LP, rotting away somewhere.! Hey, ho. Best regards,
  18. Hello. I have a few back issues of Twikker Rag Mag, including 1974. Does anyone else have any old, back issues of Sheffields' Rag Mag in it's Heyday?

  20. Thanks for this posting Karen. NOW I remember Chris....(Long), since you mentioned the dog wearing a neck scarf. That bit has jogged my memory. Yes....Nice bloke.
  21. That's how I remember him also, especially a great header he scored.
