  1. Sound like you want the Time Team mate!!
  2. Its been along time since the council had any involvement in the Leadmill - the managment bought it out in the late 80s/early 90s for a ridiculously cheap price. But still cannot see why the club would be shutting.
  3. I once had it on draft in Christchurch in New Zealand - tasted rubbish - but worth it for the novelty value!!
  4. The only thing you're likely to find is a free party - try http:http://www.nta303.co.uk if you can wait a week - its Zogg's 4th Birthday on sat 11th at Zero!
  5. Sheffield is quite a bit different from Leeds & you'll find the bars a bit less "fashonable" - whether thats a good or bad thing depends on your taste! From sounds of your post - top of Division st (Forum, Halcyon, Green bar, Lounge Bar & Revolution) would probably be best area for *bar* crawl (pubs are a differnt matter) - though they do get packed at weekends.. the further into town you venture - the chav-ier it becomes... or you could try Ecclesall Rd or Broomhill for the full-on student exprience... BTW Zero stopped doing R&B nights quite some time ago & now has quite a varied selection of leftfield clubs nights - fri is Urban Gorrilla (Breaks & stuff) and Sat has revolving Hustle (House), Planet Zogg ( Tech-trance), Riddimption (Reggae) & Razor Stilleto (Electro).
  6. In my experience - its common for dance clubs or dance nights to search people on the way in - although compared to London clubs - Sheffield searches are not that strict (although I'm not sure of the legality of doorstaff putting their thumbs inside waistbands as has happend to me in London...). If someone was going to use a "date rape" drug (I agree - its not really an appropriate term) - dont think searches would put them off though. However the number of incidents are still quite low and far more problems come about as a result of excessive alcohol consumption.
  7. There used to be a goth/alt/rock night on a tuesday run by Tony - or Dr Dethtone as he was then - was it called something like Sinergy? Supernaught the Sabbath cover by 10 000 Homo Djs seemed to be abit of an anthem if I remember correctly through those drunken 50p a pint nights... There may have been a fri alt/rock night as well - as I can vaguely remember chatting up this girl and being asked by a drunk townie lad from behind (I'm small with long fair hair) "what are two nice girls like you doing in a place like this?" - the look on his face when he realised I was male was priceless.. BTW Corp may come in for a bit of critisism - but I think people forget quite how rubbish Rebels actually was! sorry for going off on a tangent - but got me reminiscing!
  8. The NCPM is currently being refurbished & will be moved into by Hallam Students Union later this year - I'd imagine they'd continue to run their normal student nights on fri & sat - but will probably be up for hire deals during the week or holidays.
  9. I think Lickable's problem was not where to finds a breaks night, but where to find somewhere that he (who likes breaks) and his brother (who is into metal) could go to together...
  10. I can see your dilema - you could keep your brother happy and go to Corporation for some nu metal mayhem or you could go for some breaks action at Urban Gorilla to keep you happy - but what to do to keep both of you reasonably happy once the pubs have shut? Maybe somewhere with a late bar - but they do all tend to be quite (ahem..) bar like - so your brother might not like it. The Showroom Cinema Bar isnt too bad & think they have Pulp Funktion on a fri night till 2am - so that might be good call. The Casbah is good for a lairy **** up session - but it does get very raucous - so maybe you'd not be too keen. Theres a real gap in the market for normal pubs with late hours - roll on the change in licensing! What about just going for a curry?
  11. Sheffield has, and always has had, a really good underground scene - but is probably behind Leeds in the more mainstream clubbing stakes. Urban Gorilla is doing the business breaks wise and even seems to be doing the sort of techno stuff that Remedy used to do. Zero has taken an admirable decsion to go for the more left-field nights and as well as UG, hosts Planet Zogg (Trance/techno), Razor Stilletto (Electro), Riddimption (Reggae) and Hustle (House). Theres always been lots of good smaller nights in Sheffield -a s well as one off parties at places like the Everyone's Centre & lots of free parties. But Sheffield has always been a bit lacking in the glossy ads in mixmag type clubs (apart from Gatecrasher & Bed of course) - cannot say its bothered me much though.. And Sheffield must be one of the freindliest places to go out in - only place I've been that comes close is Bristol.
  12. I've seen very few bands pull it off in the Octagon due to it's barn like shape & atmosphere - and that includes The Pixies and Niravna who were both decidely average many moons ago. If I remember correctly - it was originally desgned for a 2200 capacity - but for a variety of reasons has a 1500 capacity - so there is always lots of space round the edges - but as the City Hall is shutting donw for a refit - looks like there will be even more gigs at the Octagon this year.
  13. "kingdoim wont be moving there/........ why wud they swap a good clubbing location (near west street and division street) for a much inferior location..... not gonna happen really" I though there was going to be MAJOR redevelopemnt all round Cole Bros/Barkers Pool in next few years - so it would make a lot of sense for Kingdom to move - not that I'm ever likely to go there!
  14. If it was last saturday - then it was Planet Zogg at Zero - which is a trance techno all nighter - so dont think there would be much cross over with Purple! ...and Zogg had a decent sized crowd in on sat - esp for a summer w/e. Zero seems to moved away from the mainstream market -and seems to be doing a good job catering for the more left field type nights - Urban Gorilla, Razor Stilletto, Riddimption, Hustle etc - so hurray for Zero!
  15. Is that Lez from Rebels - is he still around??
  16. I think that you have to be clear on who your market is. If its "Classic Rock" - then your crowd will be older and probably wont go out as much - but when they do go out - will probably spend a lot at the bar. The reason that Corp shifted its emphasis to nu metal, and the average aged dropped by about twenty years, it cos thats quite literally what the kids want - and overall numbers went up as a result. I'm sure if Mutley thought there was money to be made in going all out for the classic rock crwod - he'd be well onto it. Whatever you may think of Corp - Mutley knows his audience - now the audience may not be who you want to spend your sat nights with - and your doing something about that - so good luck - but i wouldnt be too dismissive of Corp (apart from the bogs...)
  17. If anywhere sells Perry - the Fat Cat (Kelham island), or maybe the Devonshire Cat (town), are probably your best bet.
  18. Theres not much in the way of trance at the weekends in Sheffield at all since Gatecrasher stopped. PLANET ZOGG at Zero every second sat of the month plays the harder and more techno end of trance, and theres a new monthly night called AHEAD at the Adelphi thats run by some folk who used to be involved with Gatecrasher - you'll occcasioanly get some very hard trance at HEADCHARGE at the Arches but its mainly hard acid techno - and thats about your lot... Urban Gorilla at Zero is probably your best bet on a fri.
  19. Always entertained by the way that any thread can be hijacked to advertise the CRB.. but isnt Kronenbourg a french beer? Not quite in the same league as the real ale pubs mentioned - but the Hogshead pubs do a few belgian beers, and if you're near the train station or going to see a film - the showroom has Leffe & Hoegarden on draft.
  20. Sad fact of life is that the reason you wont like a particular city centre bar - is because its not aimed at you! Some marketing dept will have worked out who gives the most spend per square foot in any area - and for most city centre bars - those are 18-30 yr olds getting bladdered. The Devonshire Cat is as just as much aimed at a target market as any of the tacky bars - but as I'm obviously in that market - i dont mind too much
  21. If you like trance - you'd probably enjoy Planet Zogg - its not psy trance in the strict sense - more tech-trance if you're being pedantic - but still pretty cosmic!
  22. I think the commercial clubs will struggle against the last license bars - but those that are offering something different - ie more than jsut soemwhere to drink & cop off - are always going to do ok. As for the Arches - i heard the new lease holders intend turning it into a garage club - so should be interesting time ahead
