  1. As far as I know, they weren't bailed out by the tax payer, their pre-recession prudance has allowed them to prosper from other banks failings and they've repositioned themselves to get the most out of the current climate. Exactly as HSBC have done. From my perspective, fair play to them and they can pay their staff all the money they want. It's also worth remembering that these profits will also have taken into account all the capital restructuring they were forced to do by changes to banking regulation - including increasing their Tier 1 Capital Ratio.
  2. A vote for Labour isn't a wasted vote, however it could be seen that way in constituencies such as Hallam. On a serious note, I don't think people should speculate on the results of the election and let that sway their vote. You should go to the polling station, vote for the party that best represents your views and then see how it all pans out. In terms of a swing - the majority of the country in 2005 didn't vote - meaning that if the whole country (unlikely) or even 75% of the electorate was to get off their arses and actually vote, anything could happen.
  3. I think ripping is the best way, I always tend to slowly peel it away though
  4. Tomlinson Plumbing Services for the radiators, used by 'forummers' all the time: 07808 763 784 Also on the SF Business Directory http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/directory/Tomlinson-Plumbing-Services.html
  5. Ah OK, thanks, it was one of those things that I had a few ideas as to why, just wasn't sure I quite like the Lib Dems, Nick Clegg once came into our Politics lesson at A level (there was only 6 of us taking the course...shock) and spoke to us for about an hour about politics and Parliament. Great, genuine guy. Just hope power doesn't corrupt him
  6. I've got a question about how the voting intentions for the upcoming General Election are calculated. Below is a cutout from Business Week It states that the Liberal Democrats have been polled as being the overall favourite in one opinion poll, and at or around 29% on other polls. My question relates to how - with similar support to both the Conservatives and Labour - such support would only equate to 121 seats in Parliament.
  7. Not sure why there's all this banter going, if you want to know what requires a TV license then see: http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/
  8. That's my dad's business To clarify, what I meant was that benefits shouldn't increase based on the number of children you have after you've already had two. If you want a third child then it's a conscious decision by yourself that you can afford to bring up that child, and if it comes to the case where you cannot adequatly support your children then Social Services should intervene to review the options.
  9. Great, we'll get 14 more of the blood sucking cretins at this rate if she gets what she wants. Disgusting, deplorable, I just don't know the words that sums them up. No child benefits after you've had 2 children, any additional children would be taken on my the parents own expense and if they don't have the funds to support their children then Social Security should be called to look at alternative living arrangements for the children. There is absolutely no place in politics for emotions to severely influence policies. We're in debt, my NI contribution will be rising, I pay a fortune in tax and struggle to pay bills. It's clear that socialism doesn't work in a capitalist society. Benefits should be paid based on contributions. I'd much rather we then created social jobs for all those unemployed who couldn't find work, and only paid them for time spent doing community work. Just common sense policies that need to be taken up, enforced and maintained by a strong goverment. The big question is.. who?!
  10. The real story in this is that FarmVille wont refund the money, but have now closed his account (along with Facebook closing his account). The fact a 12 year old used a credit card online is as much an issue with the lack of verification checks on cards these days as it is with him using it in the first place. He's 12... he'll learn from this mistake and move on.
  11. We had a Sky Analogue Box and original Digital Box and now have a Sky + Box and Sky + HD box and we've never had any problems with the hardware having been with Sky now for around 15 years. It seems to be hit and miss, but don't they say that around 5% of all hardware for anything is faulty, so perhaps not a great suprise.
  12. I'll be voting Labour - mainly for the reasons highlighted in the above post. You may think bad of me for choosing to vote Labour because of the issues over their tenure as government - however I think a lot of people are being naieve thinking that the Conservatives could do a better job. It's a hell of a lot easier to be the opposition than it is to be in power. I'd be interested in seeing a similar list of the failures of the Conservatives in ensuring accountability and all the changes in policy since 1997. I have a feeling it wont flatter them
  13. I was accepted into Newcastle, Manchester and Liverpool universities two years ago after I finished my A Levels, however I chose to go straight into work. I got on an under graduate scheme at HSBC who basically said "why go to university and study what we were doing two to three years ago" and in some respects that's true (more so in IT which is where I'm working). 3 years working as a Technical Analyst (promoted twice now) at HSBC will probably look better than a degree in Business and Economics for a few reasons: - Valuable work experience - Progress during the time spent at HSBC - HSBC being a good company to have on my CV I say this because people on this thread are making wild assumpsions that generalises people who do, and do not go to university. I think there's a few facts: 1. For whatever reason, degrees are not carry the same weight as they did a few decades ago 2. More emphasis is now put on the grade of the degree, and the university that rewarded it 3. More courses have been added that, looking at the big picture, disadvantage those who study them in the long run (pretty much a case of how much the degree will add to their average salary compared to cost of attaining it) 4. A lot more people are completing Master degrees due to job uncertainty. Please don't generalise people though, most without a degree can more than hold their own in a conversation, and not all people with a degree are masterminds.
  14. The Bold 9700 is the best for physical keyboard blackberrys. It has everything (3G, WiFi, Camera Flash, High Resolution Screen etc) yet is a compact as the Curve 8900. The Curve doesn't have 3G btw, although Blackberry's Internet Service and GPRS compression is one of the best.
  15. I don't have a driving license, and don't drive. It is quite annoying when people do use them though (after all I've said in this thread.... lol )
  16. Am I right in thinking the biggest cause of the issue is the 'thinking' done whilst on the phone that distracts, and not physically holding the phone to your ear?
  17. Nope, changing banks is quite easy. All the main banks signed an agreement which allows you to transfer all your direct debits from one account to another in a painless fashion. I suppose the most difficult part would be informing your employee of your new bank details.
  18. Understand you here, and I do think an advertising campaign similar to what has been used for drink driving would be effective. Speeding drivers isn't directly related to mobile phone use though, and I'm sure that results in more deaths.
  19. Maybe this forms part of the argument about using mobiles whilst driving, but it's not the point I'm trying to make.
  20. I understand that point, but emotions should play little part in the setting of policies. In 2008, thousands died from MRSA in hospital, see: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/CCI/nugget.asp?ID=1067 Death rates for the globe, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_causes_of_death_by_rate Out of 20 million or so drivers in the UK, only 4 deaths is really really insignificant (0.0002%) and therefore, even if all deaths caused by using mobile phones were to be eradicated, would the effort have justified the reward. My point is the police would be better directing their resource elsewhere.
  21. I think to be considered full time the minimum is 30 hours a week, and the legal maximum is 48. Most seem to be 35 (as explained by Sadact above)
  22. Am I the only one thinking that 4 people dying from people using mobile phones whilst driving should mean it should be low priority and the current punishments are already adequate? Especially considering those 4 deaths were probably punished by 'death by dangerous driving or without due care and attention'.
  23. OK, does anyone know how much it has cost to introduce and enforce the mobile phone ban and any revenues that it has brought in. I think it would be quite interesting to see: (Costs - Revenues) / # of Fatalities Then we could do this for other things such as drink driving, violent crime etc and see if it's an efficient use of police resources trying to enforce it.
