  1. I'd definitely do it if it were available. Why doesn't the council provide it though!? There seem to be plenty of people who would be delighted if they did offer it. Perhaps some organization? A petition or summat?
  2. I think there is definitely a case for those claiming that cyclists can be dangerous, I've seen it myself. I would like to point out though, that the damage a cyclist can do through dangerous cycling is (usually) very minimal when compared to a similar offence by a car driver. The fact is that a car is infinitely more likely to kill someone when involved in an accident, PARTICULARLY CYCLISTS. As an ex cyclist (I'm too frightened in Sheffield) and a learner driver I am horrified by most peoples disregard for the highway code (both cyclists and drivers). I think insurance would be a great idea for cyclists, both to pay for damage they may do to peoples cars but also to pay for damage done to their bicycles by dangerous drivers. There are two sides to every story and I'm afraid I err on the side of the cyclists on this one. They don't damage the environment and they keep you fit too!
  3. The little things in life... A pretty sky on the way home, a smile from a stranger, sound of kids playing in the school down the road...
  4. I had a strange experience when claiming job seekers. I didn't even want housing benefit as had paid rent up front. I had stated I lived with two male friends and they came roud to check that our house had three bedrooms and I wasn't cohabiting with either of them. I assume if I had been they would have seen me as a dependent and not eligible. I realise that there are people who are out to get what they can from the system but I think its really unfair when they pick on innocent people I hope it all works out for you!!
  5. similar subject.... does anyone know of any salvage yards in or around sheffield as I am looking for a fireplace and have heard these are a good bet. Can't afford to buy one new!
  6. Our next door neighbours have had a large kitchen extension built onto the back of their house. In order for this to happen they had to take down the original kitchen which was attached to ours. The problem is that there is now a gap between ours and theirs and their builders have done nothing to repair the damage done to our wall or make it weather proof. I have had building regs round to look and they say it definitely can't be left as it is (damp is coming in in parts), but as the gap between the two building is too small for anyone to get into its difficult to see what can or should be done. The building regs man said he would issue a letter to both parties but that its not in his powers to do anything else. Help!! Does anyone have any experience with anything like this, or any ideas about what we should/can do?
  7. Don't do it!! UPVC is exceptionally bad for the environment as it takes a great deal of energy to produce. It is made using unsustainable resources (fossil fuels), and despite what the manufacturers tell you they are unlikely to last more than 20 odd years. I know they tend to be cheaper than wood, but when you offset the cost of wooden against UPVC in the long term its far more expensive. Wooden windows canlast for centuries and if bits do break/rot they can easily be replaced. With UPVC if something goes wrong you have to replace the whole unit!! ww.greenspec.co.uk Check it out for yourself!
  8. Hooray!! All sorted then. I shall get Bob round for all my building needs..
  9. My partner and I have just bought a bit of a wreck in walkley. We need to have an rsj put in between the dining room and offshot kitchen and a concrete floor lowered. Anyone got any recommendations?
