  1. You might have more luck with getting somebody to take one of the windows out of its frame and shifting furniture out of that. Its generally quite easy to do, and I guess there's probably some-one on here that'd be able to do it for you. My mate had it done on his house when they moved in, and it cost 50 quid or so. Probably cheaper than having the locks changed!
  2. You'd need two lines really - one running up the east coast joining Nottingham, Sheffield (or more likely Doncaster), Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh; and one across country and then up the west coast joining Birmingham, Manchester, and Glasgow. I'm personally more bothered about the cost of travelling on the train than the time it takes. £100+ to London is far too expensive. If it wasn't for the cost, I'd travel by train anywhere i could - its by far my favourite mode of transport.
  3. I really like picasa. It integrates really well with google's picasa program. I really like some of the clever features in picasa like straightening photos and adjusting the colour/contrast (since its really easy and i cant be bothered to learn photoshop/paint shop pro!).
  4. When I post pictures online they are generally lower resolution anyway, so no-one will want to make prints of them. If i was looking to make a living out of them, I'd most likely use some kind of watermark as mrmist suggested. I know that photoshop and paint shop pro both have this ability.
  5. You'll have to set up port forwarding on your router. Try: http://portforward.com/help/portforwarding.htm I haven't bothered though - it still works, but i probably dont get the best speed possible.
  6. Here's an email from the University I received yesterday asking for feedback: Feel free to leave some! P.s. Becky B - I like the Information Commons!
  7. Unlike selling off our rail network, power companies, etc for short term gain? *cough*Tories*cough*
  8. What rankings are you looking at? World snooker has Dott ranked 6th. I personally fancy Ronnie (if he can hold it together), Hendry or Higgins. And as an outside shot I'll go for Ding - he is quite a talent and I'd certainly be surprised if he doesn't win it at some point in the future. Really as long as Ebdon and Murphy dont win I'll be happy.
  9. He is a fantastic talent, but he will have dips in form. Just look at what happened to Rosberg and Kubica last season - they both showed fantastic pace at times but weren't consistent over the season. According to the ITV-F1 website 54% of people answering their survey reckon he'll be champion this year. I think they need a dose of reality! I do expect him to be crowned world champion at some point in his career, but I'd be very surprised if it was this year. I think a realistic position at the end of the season with the car he's got under him would be 3rd or 4th (which is still ******* impressive!).
  10. I've just flown back from the US with United - on the way out our flight was overbooked and i was stuck in the middle row right at the back. I'm probably just above average height (~ 6'2") and my knees were jammed into the seat in front with all the seats up right. After take off the woman in front of me reclined her seat all the way back (and they dont recline from the waist - they recline from the bottom) crushing my knees and, being stuck right at the back, i was unable to recline my seat at all. Then she kept having a go at me for knocking her seat because, whenever i moved at all, that motion was transmitted into her seat. I spoke to her several times about the lack of space i had, but she flat out refused to do anything about it. So this is me being selfish and not wanting the person in the seat in front of me to recline. I travelled economy plus on the way back - a much more comfortable journey (apart from the cancelled flight from LA - but thats another story!) even if it was substantially more expensive.
  11. I've never met a landlord that would be happy to come out and put up some pictures for you! Ask your landlord, but tbh i've never had any problems hanging pictures or drilling into walls.
  12. We use Farmaround. £18 for a large bag of veg and a small bag of fruit. The unexpected advantage that we found is that we actually spend loads less on shopping now, as we only go to the supermarket every 2-3 weeks.
  13. Only if you sign you tenancy agreement after 6th april this year: http://www.communities.gov.uk/index.asp?id=1504444
  14. Also take at look at http://www.dcresource.com/. I'd recommend taking a look at the Fuji F30 (also reviewed here). It takes great pictures - especially in low light (it uses Fujis super CCD light sensor, and can take pictures using up to ISO 3200. At ISO 800 and below the photo quality is superb, above that and artifacts from the noise reduction creep in). For your budget i think a point and shoot digital camera would be best. A decent quality digital SLR is out of your budget, and with digital SLRs you have to remember to budget for lenses too. If you can afford more (and want a DSLR) then the Canon EOS 400D (for about £500) seems quite highly rated. Once you've got your camera, take a look at Ken Rockwell's site which has some useful info on using it. Hope this helps, Alex ps I've just bought the Canon IXUS 800 - which seems to have performed well in all the reviews i've seen - but have yet to properly try it out. Its performance in low light is no-where near as good as the Fuji F30 though.
  15. Yes - its quite easy, especially if a crime is involved. Just look at the file-sharing cases in the US.
  16. Does anybody actually smoke that anymore? I personally think that (as many other posters have stated) it should be legalised and taxed heavily with an age limit of 21 and for use in your own home.
  17. What scared you off Python? I actually quite like the language - I find it really useful for scripting (I use it much more than bash or csh on unix). I also like the dynamic typing (sometimes - although i dont think i'd want to program a large scale system using it!), and the simplicity of mixing OO and functional programming. I also like Java though! (I also think the JDBC is pretty simple to use - and I'd definitely choose Java over .NET, especially if you're looking to work cross-platform)
  18. XBox 360 with 20GB HD and Component HD cable - £265 XBox 360 HD Drive - £130 XBox overheating and burning your house down - priceless ------------------- So not only is there no hdmi cable supplied with the 360, it seems that there isnt one available. You can get HD through component video, except some tvs dont support true HD through component video. I'm not a particular fan of Sony, and i'm certainly not bothered about either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Personally i'll sit this one out until either 1) dual format players are available at a decent price; or 2) there is a clear winner between the 2 formats.
  19. Out of interest, do you make any posts without link spamming? I take it you own this network you keep linking to.
  20. Whilst not exactly freeware this seems to be what you want - its only a fiver or so. This tells you how to do it using Firefox, the Video Downloader extension, and MediaCoder (to encode to a format you can watch easily - i.e. AVI).
  21. But a lot more than a more environmentally sound car doing the same journeys. Which is kinda the point.
  22. Do you mean to record tv from a tuner card? If so then try MythTV.
  23. Virgin Mobile is carried on the TMobile network anyway i think.
  24. A fix for internet explorer: http://www.getfirefox.net/
  25. People i've collaborated with actually do this! TBH, its like all coding conventions - once you get used to it its no effort at all. I dont use it for my personal projects though, i dont think it looks very elegent!
