  1. I'm glad they found your car. Thankfully they have also found my wife's car now - it's a bit bashed up, but it's with the insurance company's garage now to be fixed. Hopefully we should get a courtesy car this week. I also love Meersbrook - i'll just be more careful about locking the doors, etc. And I'll be removing the key hooks from the corridor! You live and learn. Cheers, b
  2. We lived on Pearson Place for a few years, and then moved onto Cliffefield Road last year. It is a nice area, and we both really enjoy living here - I guess s**t happens everywhere. It's probably only the first or second time we've ever left the door unlocked too It's pretty much the last thing I do before going to bed. We'll be extra paranoid about checking it now - and we'll certainly lock it when we're not downstairs. Commiserations to you too. Did you get the car back? The coppers seemed pretty confident they'd recover it, but we've not heard anything yet.
  3. Yeah - they said no signs of forced entry. I don't think the SOCO even dusted anything, but I was on my way to work and the missus dealt with it. I'm hoping that the verdict of no signs of forced entry wont screw up the insurance claim at all (the car insurance should be fine, it's just the contents might be awkward ...). I'll have another look when I get home. TBH the worst things about it are the inconvenience and the cost of the insurance excesses.
  4. Well, the car insurance company are officially rubbish - it's Diamond insurance, and they wont give any idea about how low it needs to be.
  5. Surely all PCs that have a usb port are upgradeable by portable hard drives? Plus you can stick a 16GB SDHC card in it to expand capacity. The 901 (linux edition) has 20GB steady state storage though, so it's probably enough for most people (unless their storing loads of movies and music - but I don't think that is the target market). Also, I think you're missing the point of the target market - the IBM Thinkpad x41 is £1200+vat and is "a very underpowered machine". These ultraportables aren't intended to be desktop replacements, they are intended for commuters who just want to be able to check email on the move or do a bit of word processing. And they do come with WIFI (the eee 901 comes with 802.11n).
  6. Hi, My wife's car was stolen from outside our house last night. The were no signs of forced entry, but I'm sure I locked the door They came in, took my wife's bag (with sat nav and ipod in) and took the car keys from where they were hanging up downstairs. We'll definitely not be hanging keys up in an obvious place again Does anybody have any idea how long it might take for the insurance company to pay out if it isn't recovered? She needs the car for work, and this will be really inconvenient (not to mention extremely irritating!).
  7. The Vostro isn't the same market though, is it? The Vostro is a fully featured 15" laptop that weights 2.84kg. The Asus EEE or this minibook is an ultra-portable netbook that weighs less than 1kg. I've carried a heavy laptop around with me (for about 3 years) and it is not fun. It would have been OK if I'd just been doing it occasionally, but I carried it to and from work every day. In answer to the OP: I'd go for the Asus EEE - if it's the 701 you want, then it's available for sub £200. Microdirect have them for £180 including VAT. I'm personally holding out for the 901 - more RAM, bigger screen, better battery life, more Storage, Intel ATOM processor ... - £280ish (when I can find it in stock!). Other ones to look out for are the Acer Aspire One (RRP £220) and the MSI Wind.
  8. The original farmer's market shop in Bakewell do Hog Roasts: http://thefarmersmarketshop.co.uk/ We used them to cater our wedding earlier in the year and would highly recommend them. Prices depend on exactly what you want - ours was £20 a head for Carvery, Veggie Option, Salads, Cheese Board, and Deserts. Richard and Carolyn are lovely, and there was was nothing but praise from all our guests about the food (I caught one or two going up for 4ths! ) HTH, b
  9. http://www.metro.co.uk/money/article.html?in_article_id=257908&in_page_id=36 The article deals with student rents, but I've observed similar trends in other rental accomodation over the past few years. As more people choose to rent rather than buy, rental prices will inevitably increase. Landlords will charge whatever the market will bear.
  10. 36 goals in 78 games for Arsenal and 30 in 37 games for Togo suggest that, although scum, Adebayor ain't bad! I'd just about be prepared to accept that he's on a par with Torres. And 27 goals in 69 games suggest Berbatov ain't no slouch either! I would also argue that there is a lot more to Berbatov's game than there is to Torres'. I'm slow on the uptake today I'm not saying Torres is rubbish by any means ('cos that'd be stoopid!) - and obviously his got his best years ahead of him - but I don't think he's "probably the best striker/forward in world football". At least not yet!
  11. Hi, My wife lost her purse this afternoon in Meersbrook (probably somewhere between the top of Meerbrook park and the Co-op on Lees Hall Avenue). If anyone finds it please send me a PM. Thanks, b p.s. The cards have been cancelled, she's contacted the police station, what else have we missed? She's had it for ages so they'll be all sorts in there
  12. Is this the strength and determination that makes him fall over whenever he gets inside the box? I'd say that Villa, Adebayor, Eto'o, Van Nistelroy, Rooney, Ronaldo and Messi are better forwards than Torres. Berbatov, Drogba and Klose are probably about on par with Torres. Samuel Eto'o - 79 goals in 108 games for Barca, 34 in 72 for Cameroon.
  13. Have you got a suggestion as to who could fit one for this price? All the places I looked at told me it'd be around £3000 (inc. the stove). We never got anyone to actually copme out and give us a quote because the price was so off-putting!
  14. If you go to the website and click on the "This Week" link it tells you what was in most of the bags in the current week. We get a Luxury Veg bag and a Mini Fruit bag, and that does me and my wife for a week very comfortably (we usually have a bit too much!). That's cooking with it pretty much every day too! I'd recommend it. There are more local schemes now (there are several threads on the forum - try here and here), and quite a few of the companies have pictures of what you're going to get - such as Giant Peach and Wildstar Foods. We've been meaning to give one of the more local schemes a try, but it's so easy to stick with what you've got!
  15. I would agree with you that the quality in waitrose is second to none, but I disagree about the price. Nipping in to pick up a few things often comes to £50 - without particularly pushing the boat out. I use waitrose for a treat, but most of our food comes from one of the organic veg delivery schemes (http://www.farmaroundnorth.co.uk). It costs us about £25 a week for fuit and veg, but means we only go to the supermarket every 2 or 3 weeks.
  16. Unfortunately it is now practically impossible to show due diligence and is usually just easier to nominate the person with the least points! You can look on pepipoo to see what the success rate for claiming you didn't know who was driving is.
  17. Have you got any evidence to back this up?
  18. You don't have to install openoffice from the repositories. You can download the .deb package off the openoffice.org website if you need to have the latest version. I do admit that often the repositories in Ubuntu don't have the latest versions of software - but that's because they're the versions that the package maintainers can support. I had similar issues when installing eclipse - to use the latest version I had to download it myself. The only times I've had to install stuff from tars under Ubuntu in the 3 years I've been using it was using poorly maintained or bleeding edge software.
  19. Not exactly 3 words, but String Theory in 2 minutes or less. My favourite was the String Ducky - but they are all brilliant. I wish that I had the ability to explain complex concepts as simply as some of the entries.
  20. I work in academia and love my job, so if i had the cash i wouldn't stop working. It would allow me to not play the political game though - which would be awesome! I'd also probably only work part time, and on my own terms, since if i had enough money they'd be so much else i'd like to do as well! Appropriately, my Dad has just taken early retirement (at 56) - after b*tching about his job for the last 10 years (at least!). He's loving it - and certainly not having any difficulty filling his days!
  21. I really like dominos! It is too expensive but it's the nicest pizza delivery I've had. Pizza Hut is truly awful though. I'd use a pizza express delivery service if they did one - I think they make some of the nicest pizzas I've had in this country. Oh and i totally agree about Elifs - if only I still lived around Eccy Road ...
  22. This isn't true - for the purposes of council tax if you are living with a student you can still get the single person discount: http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/your-city-council/council-tax/students-and-council-tax/student-occupied-properties
  23. Mine are 2.4GHz senders and work fine. As Ghozer says, if you have problems just change your wireless channel.
