  1. Hello Moss Street, I lived on Moss Street from 1952 till the mid 60s. Our address was Hunsley Street, but our only outside door was on Moss Street along with the coal shute and the one downstairs window. I can remember the garages and pigeon coits, never tried to climb up them, but recall the rats and my pals of the time using them for shooting practice of an evening. Never liked eating the pigeons, too many little bones, but we were rather poor and it was good protein so never refused if offered. I have been looking through some old stuff recently and the link below is the photo from a negative. A lady with a small dog, I think itโ€™s the bottom of Moss Street at junction with Carlisle Street. I would be nice to put a name to the lady, if you or anyone else on the forum remember her. I have some more negatives that I hope to scan and share if this link works. Cheers, Phil https://flic.kr/p/2jFnKGT
  2. Hi Intake1952 I am replying under my husband's sign in. Thanks for letting me know about you working with Jerry at Davy's. I was never aware that he worked there. There is quite a big age gap between us so I only ever knew of him in showbusiness. I'll tell his sister to pass on your message when she next sees him. I do remember his father working at Davy's. he also worked with members of my dad's family as well as some friends of mine. He died about three years ago at the age of 92. He was a very lovely man. Thanks Andromeda
  3. Hi Jerry's name was, indeed, Pinder. When I was still at school (I left in 1970) I remember his father (my uncle), telling me that someone had phoned him to ask if it was true that Jerry was related to me. The Pinder family is/was a large family so your school mate probably is related to him. Hope this helps.
  4. Thanks for that darkoak, it fits in with census details I have for the Goodison family who are recorded as living at Knowle Top Stannington.
  5. I applied for the Thompson & Morgan seeds on the same day as the GW trial was announced but haven't received anything yet. The annoying thing is that within a day of submitting my request, I started getting lots of emailed promotional material from Thompson & Morgan. Has anyone else received their seeds?
  6. Think I have partially answered my own question by visiting the sheffield history forum - 1951 list of licensed premises: Wellington Inn Albt. Leek 122 & 124 Carlisle rd 4 Sheffield BO BO stands for beer only licence
  7. OK I finally got this picture scanned in of a group of people outside the pub in Carlisle Street. I think it's the Wellington and probably in the late fifties, but does anybody recognise the Landlord or anybody else in the picture? http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r42/philturner/wellingtonpub.jpg
  8. I have a birth certificate, dated 1837, for one of my ancestors. It gives the place of birth as Clod Hall Stannington. Does anybody know where and what this Clod Hall was?
  9. The Oldfields of Grimesthorpe. Jack and Edna along with 'old' Mrs Oldfield ran the business in Moss street. 3d for a cornet with raspberry and choc bits. luvvly
  10. Nigel, do you mean the swimming bath at the junction of Corporation street and bridgehouses. I have been doing some work down there for the Inner ring road. The place was being demolished but you couldn't imagine there being enough room for a swimming pool. Phil T
  11. There was a pirate station that came on to the scene a bit later on called radio geronimo. it played all the 'underground' music. I remember sending off a postal order to an address in Harley st london hoping to get a T shirt with the stations name on. I never received the T shirt and not long afterwards the station went off the air but at the time, as you say, they were a lot more exciting than the beeb.
  12. I believe the school moved to Stradbroke Road in 1964. I went there from 1965 to 1970> It was called City Grammar School for my first two years there, and became City School around 1967. I have to say, I can't believe the way the school has been barricaded in by all that fencing now. That wasn't there in my time. What I'd like to know is, did anyone ever get to use the 'Flat', which was part of the domestic science lab? It was built around 1967 but none of the pupils were allowed to use it during my remaining time there. The teachers used to sit in there for their coffee. I spoke to another ex pupil who left there in 1980 and she told me that it was never used during her time there either. By the way - I am replying to this using my husband's sign in name. He went to Hinde House, not City School.
  13. I remember Mr Charlesworth from Grimesthorpe juniors - he was a lovely feller. he taught my brother Robert too. Mr Gathercole was the headmaster during my time there. Did anyone else get sent down the cellar to cook up the glue?
  14. Geotom, yes Philip Turner, an original pseudonym - phil_t - that's me. How about you, geotom, not easy to pick out yr name from that. Do you know anything about Stephen? and what about Doris?
  15. Hi Mazda5, how is Les doing these days? Did he get married and have kids and all. I seem to recall having a bit of a fight with him one day behind the pigeon coits on Cookies field when the gang split up over something. We all got back together again later but I eventually lost touch with everybody when we moved to the prefabs and then later to Firth Park.
