painterman replied to *_ash_*'s topic in Sheffield News & Discussions
And goes as far down as Meadow street, if you go from there to Upperthorpe you are rising all the way, so it depends which way you look at it. Buy the way only telling you what the teachers taught us. -

Not sure where the heart of the villages were when they were named but if you think where the schools are then Upperthorpe is at the top of Daniel Hill street and Netherthorpe is a lot lower. -

As a young boy I went to both Netherthorpe and Upperthorpe schools, we were taught that the word "thorpe" is an old word for village/town, Upperthorpe being the village on the hill and Netherthorpe being the lower village. -
The one you are thinking of is Wyberton Bridge. And your right it is the South forty foot, the little forty foot is a tiny drain running parallel on a back road that leads to Chapel Hill.

Charles Peace- Sheffield born murderer
painterman replied to Timbuck's topic in Sheffield History & Expats
Hi In the early 60s I worked on the art college and was told at the time that there used to be a couple of small houses at the brow of the hill opposite side to Omega, all that was there at the time was a kind of very small rock face, anyway i was also told Charles peace lived in one of them, not sure if it's true. I think he was caught whilst living in London, on the run after shooting a policeman. -
Recognise big Malc, we used to have season tickets at Hillsborough in the 70s and we used to go fishing down lincs and also played darts in the Furnival. Please tell him Chalky says hello.
