  1. What did everyone think to the Boxing Day sales in the city centre then? I thought it seemed a bit of a dismal experience really with the amount of places open although I knew about Next and M&S not opening today. Also, as far as I know, the only public toilets open in the city centre were the ones at the interchange. Orchard Square, M&S, Millenium Galleries, Town Hall toilets were all closed when I went past late morning and this afternoon. Sh2006.
  2. My tracked Amazon package also hasnt reached Sheffield... Despatched to carrier by Amazon Scotland on the 9th December and has taken all this time just to get as far as the Royal Mail North-West Distribution Centre at Warrington yesterday - 18th December. Sh2006.
  3. Ive given up hope on my packages now although having just checked the posting date, one of them may make it before Christmas eve. Sh2006.
  4. No wonder there is backlog, today I received junk mail for the previous resident at my address. If Royal Mail could tell me where my delayed mail is in the area then I would gladly go and collect it myself to save them a job! Regarding DHL I had a package delayed slightly by the heavy snowfall. I think I received it just 3 or 4 days later than expected and it had full tracking online showing where it was in the system. Sh2006.
  5. Talking of postmarks, why did I get a 2nd class item overnight yet my packages from early December are lost in the system? If there's no chance of suspended deliveries again, is there any target date for the backlog to be found and delivered? Having looked again at the Royal Mail service updates tonight it mentions about how they are investing extra resources to cope but it doesnt mention whether the backlog is to be priority or not. The Northern update section mentions nothing about 'S' postcodes having widespread disruption still. Any ideas/answers anyone? Sh2006.
  6. Sounds exactly the same postal predicament as mine! Sh2006.
  7. Im still waiting for Amazon and Hmv items in S20 - one of them from beginning of December. I can only assume they will never surface now so I think a claim may be my next option. Does anyone know if the telephone number of Royal Mail Holbrook has changed? I must have tried a dozen times today on the number I have always used and it has gone to answerphone after one ring everytime. Sh2006.
  8. I called into my local Royal Mail sorting office (Holbrook) yesterday to ask how the backlog was as I am expecting a few packages, I was told yesterday they had thousands to sort apparently. Whether this is still the case today or not I dont know. However...today I received a Christmas card with a 2nd class stamp on from Barnsley and the postmark date is either the 13th or 16th of December! If there is a backlog of items to be cleared why does a 2nd class item arrive overnight? Sh2006.
  9. Mr. Tracey - 'you boy/girl - get that tie lengthened'! He was scary but he was the best headteacher at Eckington School. I had Dr. P for Biology - maybe 3rd year I think but he was a good teacher. Mrs. Rosinger taught me Geography in the 1st year and I didnt like her or her fellow Geography teacher Mrs. Bayliss. My best teachers were Mr. Dixon (taught English and looked like Bobby Ball), Mr. Wareham (taught Computers), Mrs. Cope (taught English and couldnt cope). I remember something about a teacher & pupil affair but dont remember a marriage. Im sure it appeared as a small article in The Sun though but does anyone else remember it - around the early 90s? Has anyone kept their schoolwork from their days at Eckington School? Ive still got almost all of mine along with school reports, certificates of merit (remember those?) and even some letters. Ah happy days! Sh2006.
  10. Mr. Flinton 'get yer calcs out'. I think he was the one who looked like PC Danny Sparks from Juliet Bravo wasnt he? Sh2006.
  11. Sheffield is by far the better of the 2 places... Better public transport (e.g trams on Boxing Day and New Years Day) More varied Cinema choices (e.g The Showroom) More train services (e.g Manchester, York, Leeds) Larger shops that as far as I know have no branches in Chesterfield (e.g Debenhams, TJ Hughes, TK Max) However...Chesterfield is still a good traditional market town compared to Sheffield. Both places have their good and bad areas though. Sh2006.
  12. I was actually going to post a thread like this a few weeks ago as Im back to thinking of maybe moving to a city apartment. What do new tenants/owner occupiers think about their apartments - good or bad? Sh2006.
  13. The shop has taken the old Adams unit upstairs and I went in the first couple of days it had opened. Although the stock is pre-owned most of it is in almost mint condition. One of the first lot of cds I bought from there looked so new that it looked like someone had opened the cd when new and never touched it again! Another good point is that the shop does have stock which suits a wide variety of tastes and you dont have to pay HMV-style high prices for it either. Regarding the shop overheads, if everyone was like me and refused carrier bags then it would be one less overhead eating into the shop's profits. Better still if the shop just didnt offer bags at all.
  14. Although Im a big radio fan, I cant stand Radio Sheffield and seeing the big Toby Foster picture on Shoreham Street only makes things worse. The one and only good point is that Howard Pressman is a presenter on Radio Sheffield who back in the olden days was brilliant on Radio Hallam. Although I live in Sheffield I can only barely receive Radio Sheffield on FM which seems rather strange. On the other hand, I can get BBC Radio Lincolnshire and BBC Radio Humberside really clear. These days I much prefer the national stations except Radio 1.
  15. Ah this sounds familiar. When the bridge (just behind KFC going over Haymarket) was in use, I remember going past the Bhs floor on the bridge level which seemed to be a storage floor with clothing on racks. Didnt Burtons (now Ethel Austin) also have a storage level up there like Bhs? I also remember seeing the Bhs bridge level floor almost completely empty and yes it did look eerie and that was only from the outside! According to the contractor information on the Bhs main doors it does mention that the workmen are removing asbestos (no details whereabouts in the store the asbestos is/was) and also removing the escalators. When I looked in last week it seemed ever so strange to see the escalators gone and a large open hole in the ceiling.
  16. Here's the link to my Bhs thread... http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=546984
  17. There is/was a thread on the forum which I started about closed shops and I think Bhs is mentioned. Having looked through the Bhs entrance last week I had forgotten how big the shop was. The only remaining evidence of Bhs occupation is the store's floor guide at the entrance and I think the Bhs name displays are still behind the covered windows.
  18. I am desperately seeking an old Christmas film from 1987 called The Three Kings and featured Lou Diamond Philips. Please can anyone shed any more light on this film and does anyone on the forum know anyone who has got a copy or where I can get a copy - vhs or dvd? Many thanks in advance!
  19. I noticed a week or 2 ago that the central library and crystal peaks library computers were excessively slow. Its quite nice and nostalgic really, using old versions of Windows - reminds me of my dial-up days.
  20. Neepsend is one of the few areas of Sheffield that still has reminders of our once great industrial past though.
  21. If clubs/bars are open until 3am or 4am then maybe people in some areas can catch the first morning bus out of Sheffield? Some routes have the first departure of the day at around 4:30-5:00am so at this time of year with early light mornings its possible.
  22. Yes, Sheffield used to have a night bus network. Not sure the year they started but were running by the late 70s to quite a few parts of the city - some had 2 or 3 departures every night of the week and in both directions! The services expanded in the 80s to include distant areas such as Halfway and Stocksbridge. In the early 90s I seem to remember that areas over the border like Eckington and Killamarsh got included but this was only on Friday and Saturday nights. Not sure if any nightbuses were operating every night of the week by this point though.
  23. I heard this also in S20 and was probably the third time this year this noise has occurred. I usually hear it from about 4am to 7am. The last time it occurred was about a month ago and I am really surprised that the noise hasnt been stopped by 101 or the police before now.
  24. Well said there and this is why I cant be bothered with Sheffield Forum much these days. I understand that the original post in this thread was asking a genuine serious question but it took only 6 minutes for the first (not funny) reply to appear.
  25. Commercial stations these days are too slick and commercial. Back in the olden days of Radio Hallam, the ads, jingles, music and presenters were all brilliant. I listened to Keith Skues last week on Lincolnshire for the first time in a while and although he was brilliant in his Hallam days he is even more brilliant these days! I used look forward to hearing Hallam's scratched copy of Bat Out Of Hell (album version) to see if they had got round to replacing it yet. Or the times when snippets of LBC and Capital were heard in error. Radio these days doesnt really give the added extras of scratched records, wrong station/early fading in etc.
