  1. Im sure the rules in conditions of carriage are that public transport tickets are non-transferable. Regarding the cheap fares of old though (yes they really did exist!), here's what it says in the back of my 1985 SYPTE timetable book: Children at 5 and under 16 years: Adult Fare not exceeding 15p = Child Fare 2p Adult Fare above 15p = Child Fare 4p I can remember often getting away with 5p fares on Syt when I was too old around 1989...those were the days! Sh2006.
  2. It sounds good so far then thanks. Must admit I forgot to mention they are studios in my original post. At least with me not driving I wouldnt have the car parking space problem thankfully. Sh2006.
  3. What are the apartments like in Whitecroft and Cutlery Works? Rental prices at the moment seem really cheap - as low as £350 in some cases but are there any particular reasons for this? I know the area round there doesnt look amazing but always seemed peaceful when Ive passed through before. Sh2006.
  4. I think Im that desperate to leave my current job that I would probably give Ant Marketing a go! Sh2006.
  5. Many thanks for your replies! Im going to give the spec letter approach a go as the more I think about it the more I want to do it! Also I feel pretty sure that my current employer knows me well enough after all these years to know that I wouldnt share any sort of confidential company information. The bit about the references on request is a good idea and my cv does include this. Sh2006.
  6. As I stated in another thread, I am looking to move from where I currently work but have a query about speculative letters. If I was to send speculative vacancy letters to other local companies within the same industry that I currently work is it a bit too risky incase my current employer finds out? I have checked in my contract and there is nothing saying that I must not get a job with a competitor but there is wording to say that I must not divulge information which could be damaging to my present company (or long-winded wording to that effect!). However, I wouldnt ever use confidential company information in this way anyway so am I worrying too much here or have other people been in the same situation? Many thanks in advance! Sheff2006.
  7. Hi and thanks for all the replies so far. In my current job I do get frequent incoming calls but I have so many other things to do which usually have to take priority over the calls. What is an average target number of calls to answer per hour and (this might sound a bit thick!) are there many if any 'other tasks' required of a call centre worker? Over the years I have had some angry customers including the swearing ones! However, I have never ever given the same back as it is just not professional. In these situations I just listen calmly and give the customer the most suitable options because to lose a customer is another thing I always try to avoid. Sh2006.
  8. I know this is an old thread but I am looking for up-to-date views on this subject. I am considering call centre/customer service work as I enjoy customer contact in my current job although I want to leave my job asap for various reasons. Can anyone tell me of their experiences in call centre/customer service work and advise of good and bad points please? Many thanks in advance. Sh2006.
  9. When I lived in Eckington years ago, child fares were always half the adult fare because it is in Derbyshire. This was the rule whether the journey was only within Derbyshire but also applied on journeys into South Yorkshire. So back in around 1989 when half the adult fare from Eckington to Sheffield was around 50p, child fares within the Sheffield area were only 5p! If Sheffield child fares are to be increased again then its not too bad considering it has taken 20-odd years to get to the current price of 40p. Sh2006.
  10. As much as I like Sheffield, I like Leeds and Manchester but each for different reasons. Anyhow back to the subject of Sheffield though. I know the bottom of the Moor doesnt look great at the moment - including the adjoining (now demolished) old Baldwin & Francis site on Eyre Street. However, think back to how long it took for the tram network to be built and how the city centre looked during the works. Now it feels like Supertram has been in the city centre forever and Sheffield got over the disruption and the appearance of whole roads looking like a building site. Same goes for the empty buildings such as the old Bhs Haymarket branch. Look how long that was empty for - years - but time has gone forward and it now is occupied again. The city centre will improve but it takes time these days. I still want the hole-in-the-road back though! Sh2006.
  11. I wouldnt exactly class the city centre as a dump, just one or two areas needing improvement e.g Haymarket. The number of nice parts in the city centre outweigh the not-so-nice parts so Sheffield isnt that bad really. Sh2006.
  12. Im confused with the locations here! I thought Niche was at Sidney Street then moved to Charter Square but has there been another Niche location in Sheffield then? Fuel was the old Berlins place on Arundel Gate as far as I remember. Sh2006.
  13. Sheffield had its most luxurious buses years ago and I travelled on loads of them... http://thebusgalleryarchive.fotopic.net/p38435144.html Sh2006.
  14. Are there any lgbt venues in Sheffield that are not clubs but more pub-style for people who just dont like the club scene and would maybe feel out of place? Sh2006.
  15. An inspector or conductor usually do ask for tickets and passes even on crowded trams. Sh2006.
  16. Im just over the S12 border. What sort of age group will be there? Sh2006.
  17. I actually still prefer the look of the old Park Hill flats rather than the multi-coloured modernisation but this may change once the redevelopment is fully complete. Deserves to be a listed building and Im so glad I got some photos of the derelict shell over the past couple of years as a reminder of its once glorious days. Sh2006.
  18. The link below has some details about a few of the apartment blocks which have some rsl (registered social landlord/housing association) properties. http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/index.asp?pgid=113180&mtype=print Sh2006.
  19. Maybe rental/selling prices for some apartments are decreasing because of the housing association tenants? Ive noticed recently that for example in the Millsands apartments that a 1-bed or 2-bed is around £500pcm. These prices sound really low for what looks a good property development. Does anyone know which other apartment blocks in Sheffield are connected with the housing associations apart from Kelham Mills? Sh2006.
  20. I remember playing this game in the early 80s but dont remember the 'pile on' bit. Great fun back then! What I would love to know is how did the game get its name? Sh2006.
  21. Yes, the little cinema was the Cinecenta (2 screens?) which I do believe became part of the current Odeon complex. The Cinecenta had the illuminated 'moving film' sign outside (when it actually worked it looked great!) which I always remember well from when I was little. I think the Cinecenta became a Cannon cinema in its final days before the Odeon surfaced in the current location. Please correct me if Im wrong anyone! Sh2006.
  22. Ive not been to the city centre Odeon for about 4 years and it seemed ok back then. However, as we all know things change and not always for the better. I only go to the Showroom these days and I love it there. Always a nice atmosphere and never full although I only go to see foreign subtitled films. They do have some mainstream films on though. Prices are about the same as the other cinemas mentioned in the thread. Sh2006.
  23. The engineering works on the Sheffield to Manchester line tends to be a regular occurrence in the winter months. I have always assumed this is to make sure the line is problem-free in the summer months when far more people use it for the Peak District stops. Having used rail replacement coaches in the past, its a pretty quick journey over Woodhead providing there is no snow or ice. One good point about rail replacement coaches is that you do get a seat unlike on the busier trains where you have to stand for the whole journey. Sh2006.
  24. Ive seen this happen before and not just with clothes shops. Also I have seen the same item at two different prices (sale/special offer price and non-sale/standard price) in the same shop on the same day. However, talking of Next sales though. I went in the Crystal Peaks branch this morning and saw that the womens sale items almost take up a full floor yet the mens sale items take up just half a floor. Similarly in Sainsburys sale items - the womens have at least an aisle (both sides) of sale items yet the mens sale items barely took up half of one side of an aisle. Do clothes shops which cater for both men and women automatically assume all men dont like clothes shopping regardless? Sh2006.
