  1. Good news that the 252 has been saved but I for one will not be using it unless I really have to. Late-running, ancient buses that often don't turn up and the withdrawal of the 10-trip tickets has forced me to catch 2 Stagecoach buses to work. Sh2006.
  2. I seem to remember around 1989-ish in the Halfway area there were the following SYT services in operation: 770 - Works or school service Halfway area? M55 - Halfway to Crystal Peaks via Mosborough? M56 - Killamarsh to Crystal Peaks? M64 - Killamarsh area early 1990's? The 'M' routes above were usually Little Nippers but occasionaly you would see single deckers in operation. Can anyone fill me in with more details on the above routes please? Sh2006.
  3. Yes, Ive often done all these on my own. Cinema is the easiest though. Sh2006.
  4. Im not sure which transmitter Im on but last night's Look North (Harry Gration edition) definitely mentioned both Leeds and Sheffield. Sh2006.
  5. Ah yes, Ive had to put up with his 'stories' on the 50. He is quite easy to spot as he usually wears either a dark hat or a straw hat and a dark (leather?) jacket. Im really wary of him. Sh2006.
  6. This thread sounds similar to how I feel as Ive no friends either and to be honest, Ive given up on the search now. Friends are ok but I usually end up feeling used or left out and I still find it hard to socialise even though Ive had cbt for this problem. Sh2006.
  7. Wasn't there an Argos section in Woolworths on The Moor at some point in the late 70s or early 80s? I seem to recall seeing a catalogue shopping area in Woolworths back then but too young back then to remember any more details! Sh2006.
  8. I was born in Eckington and lived there on and off for many years now. Birkhill still looks a decent estate although Ive not lived there since the 80s. The Barratt Estate (Ravencarr Road and surrounding area) is still really nice too. Down in the town centre there are still empty boarded-up shops and pubs but it doesnt look quite as bad as it did a few years ago. Public transport is really great with direct buses to Sheffield, Chesterfield and Mansfield although no high frequency services. Not sure what the schools are like these days in Eckington as I left them some years ago! All in all I would recommend Eckington to you. Hope this helps. Sh2006.
  9. Regarding proposed routes, how about improving bus links where there are currently no or very limited bus routes? For example, Mosborough (Main Street) to Crystal Peaks. Is the 120 the only current daytime option for which you have a long walk down Station Road to catch the bus in Halfway? Or Woodseats/Meadowhead to Crystal Peaks? The only current service I know of is the evening 253 that links these places. Travelling by Stagecoach from S20 you have to go into the city centre to go back out again to Woodseats! Sh2006.
  10. Yes it really did happen...'radio' on the buses. I remember it on the 262 upstairs to Sheffield early-mid 1980s. Seem to think it was the 'brown and cream' era just before SYT. Sh2006.
  11. How about the mini electric sub-stations that some of the big buildings in the city centre have? Each of these have a nameplate stating which building they supply as my examples below. Dyson House - outside train station - the Dyson House building has gone but the named sub-station is still there. Primark - the nameplate on King Street still states C & A Modes. At the back of Rockingham Street a sub-station nameplate still states Robert Brothers who were somewhere nearby. Sh2006.
  12. What's the area around Intake Wadsworth Avenue like to live? Honest opinions please! Many thanks. Sh2006.
  13. I currently live in Sheffield but have lived in Eckington on and off for many years. It isnt a bad place overall but the town centre is more run-down and desolate than it used to be a few years ago. There are some good houses on the Barratt estate (Ravencar Road area) and I liked it when I lived there. Also, some parts just outside the town centre have some nice properties - Station Road and Southgate areas. I dont know about how the Eckington area schools are these days, sorry. Hope this helps. Sh2006.
  14. The Oxfam on West Street and Aged UK at Broomhill tends to have some good vinyl. I actually donated quite a few good vinyl albums to the West Street Oxfam over the past month or so. Record Collector at Broomhill does have a good selection but prices are usually high even for semi-rare items. Manchester is definately worth a trip to the record shops. Also have a look online at Premier Fairs website. They hold record collecting events around this area - the one at Doncaster Dome is well worth a visit! Hope this helps. Sh2006.
  15. Thanks for the replies about Cupola and Bower Spring! I have remembered another one now though... Bunting Nook. I seem to remember this is somewhere round Norton or Beauchief area maybe. Sh2006.
  16. 2 Sheffield street names that mystify me are: Cupola Bower Spring Anyone any ideas on how the above got their names? Sh2006.
  17. I live (not in a cardboard house!) and work in S20 which is only about 20 minutes out of the city centre by tram. Public transport is fantastic in S20 - trams and buses operating every day of the year except Christmas Day. At weekends (or weekdays) I dont watch Coronation Street or X Factor either. I would recommend my part of S20 to anyone. Sh2006.
  18. Im not so sure about this. The last couple of years Ive heard the bass 'thump' rave noise here in S20 and Im a lot lot further away than Walkley. It did seem Attercliffe-based on previous occasions from what I gathered and I did notice it was usually the same direction. Sh2006.
  19. Just the same bad practice as all the car/van drivers I still see talking (without hands-free kits) on their mobiles whilst driving. This also includes one I saw some days ago who was using their mobile (not hands-free) whilst turning left onto another road without bothering to indicate. Sh2006.
  20. Does anyone live in, have lived in or knows someone who does live in any of the 1 bedroom flat/houses (flats with stairs and downstairs bathroom!) on Heathlands in Halfway? As the properties are built over the entrance to the parking areas, does this attract more noise and antisocial behaviour from people lurking around? There seems to be a few for sale or rent on there when I had a walk through recently and just wondered if they are easy to buy or rent but very difficult to sell. Many thanks in advance. Sh2006.
  21. The West Street apartment buildings look great from the outside but always make me think they are the right homes in the wrong area - mainly due to the excess noise from people and traffic. Sh2006.
  22. Thanks for your reply. Wearabouts and what time on Saturday does the mystery real ale event start? Sh2006.
  23. Hmm sounds interesting especially the quizzes. I could do with meeting more people more often for me to conquer my anxiety problems. Am I too old and/or boring though as Im nearer 40 than 30? Sh2006.
  24. I really love the old industrial parts of Sheffield too and have taken loads of exterior photos of them over the past couple of years. I would say that the S3 area (Kelham Island, Neepsend, West Bar) definitely has the biggest and best selection of old industrial buildings. Also try around S2 (Sidney Street, Mary Street parts) as there are some good ones around there. Sh2006.
  25. Oh if only I had saved my collection of bus tickets from 1989/1990! Dogs got a good deal in 1985 as they only got charged 5p for any journey in South Yorkshire and only 10p for them on cross-boundary routes! Anyhow back to the original subject of sharing tickets... Sh2006.
