  1. Too many buses operating too many similar routes, clogging up the same roads and adding to existing traffic delays.

Think of the time and fuel that is wasted by the 120 stopping at so many city centre stops just to get to the bus station. Cross city routes don't work because the length of the routes just make more opportunities for delays. You then end up with at least 3 buses bunching up on the same route and a twenty minute wait for the next one, regularly.

I've said it before in similar threads, bring back limited stop routes like we used to have. Modern buses don't help either - look how slow the stagecoach hybrids are now. Even modern ticket machines are slower than the old wayfarer machines.

For a city who once had such a great public transport network, it's such a shame to see the depths it has sunk to these days.

  2. Its part of a plan to "upgrade" the service to a Gold service using the worn out buses off the X17. If they can run part of it limited stop they can then renumber it X50 to give the impression its a fast service. Emperor's new clothes style.

It's about time limited stop services were brought back for the outlying parts of Sheffield, worn out Gold ex-X17 buses or not. It did seem strange seeing one of these allocated to the 50 a couple of years ago in Mosborough though.

Remember the good old days of when this part of Sheffield had proper limited stop services X51/X52/X54/X55 plus the East Midland X50. None of this stopping at every single stop lark then, just quick and easy in and out of the city.

  3. Speaking of the "ticket nazis" at Piccadilly back on page one, what Sheffield needs is "enforcers" to regulate the stairs up to the footbridge to ensure people don't walk up the "down" stairs, and down the "up" stairs.

    Particularly on the island platorms, 2, 3&4, & 5.

Well said there about the stairs! I've often thought about suggesting gates/turnstiles that only operate in the correct direction on the 'up' and 'down' stairs.

  4. Is this Boots on High Street? I worked in Van Allan fashion on High St in 1980/81 and the basement stockroom was definitely haunted. It was one of those places where you just knew someone was watching you.

I remember when there was a basement sales floor in Boots but never knew about a haunted stockroom. Is the basement still used as a sales floor or did it just become one big stockroom?

  5. As a very regular traveller of Sheffield station I think it could do a lot better...cold waiting rooms in winter and greenhouses in summer, the stupid one way staircase system that I seem to follow the rules but hardly anyone else does (there always seems to be someone with a bike going down the up staircase and getting in my way).

A far better station is Stockport. Better layout, cleaner and lovely waiting rooms, managed by virgin trains. A worse station is Derby which has a bad layout, cold waiting rooms unless the sun is on the glass but they don't have the emt one way staircase system.

  6. The wifi on buses can be hit and miss but I think it's usually ok and working.

Wifi buses are often allocated to different routes. For example, a stagecoach hybrid can be on the 120s one day and on the 52s the next day. On rare occasions they appeared on the SL3s.

Wifi does work on first double deckers as I've often used it.

  7. update - the meeting is now 7pm on the 17th so a lot more people will hopefully be able to attend

I now use the 70 as I moved to Westfield and two days in a row it hasn't turned up at all and I've had to walk to Killamarsh.

When has the 50 ever gone near halfway?

There was a time a few years ago that the evening and I think all day Sunday 50's were renumbered 50B and went as far as Halfway tram stop.

  8. Really???

Have you actually been down "that side of town" as you call it. You are talking nonsense.

The whole area is changing with a mix of new student accommodation, offices and other businesses. Its already surrounded by several established hotels and is minutes away from the uni, rail stations and office buildings. Its likely to do very well

Some people always have to have a pop no matter what is proposed or what is built. No wonder this city is so behind.

Sometimes I really wish they would bring the hole in the road and all those hideous underground Walkways back circa 1989 just to remind some of those with the rose tinted specs exactly what a crap hole this city really was before the developers started their work

The whole area is indeed changing, there is also the added bonus of the plague of graffiti which is an awful welcome for visitors to Sheffield.

At least in the hole-in-the-road days the streets were safer and the graffiti was far less common.

  9. All the 120s are full though. They just spend so long letting people on (students, who can't buy week passes because they aren't transferable between the operators) that the ones behind catch them up.

The idea would be that all singles are the same price (say £1). Then when you hit 3 singles it caps at a £3 all day rate etc. Or when you hit 10 singles it caps at a £10 week rate etc. Prices for all should go down because of the considerable efficiency savings.

That's all about turning the hundred year paper system electronic. Rather than introducing an purposely-designed electronic system

Algorithms can work it all out. Most other cities in the world have managed to do it

The 120s may be full in and around the city centre but very rarely around the Halfway and Westfield section of the route especially in the evenings. However, a few things that do slow boarding down is the mass choice of different daily/weekly tickets, the amount of people who always need change from ten and twenty pound notes plus the fact that the thermal paper ticket machines print a good deal slower than the old Wayfarer machines.

  10. I would be glad of anything that speeds up buses in and around Sheffield. Bring back the old Fastline limited stop routes and reduce the frequency on the high frequency routes. Do we really need 3 x 120's together at once?

Regarding the cashless idea, how would this work with single fares when you only want to travel a short distance on a long distance route? For example, get on a bus at Halfway but only want to go to Crystal Peaks. This would be a cheaper single fare than travelling on the same bus all the way to Fulwood which would cost more.

  11. In an ideal world...it would have been cleaned up, made safe to walk through, closed completely at night, tram re-routed around it. The tram prevented all of the above from happening of course and there is no trace or even a plaque at the tram stop giving details of a former great landmark of Sheffield. Such a shame that the hole in the road has gone for good.

  12. The building on the Littlemoor has been offices for at least a couple more companies over the years.

At some point before Northgate IT/Arinso I think it was offices for Prolog. Before that I seem to think it was offices for Servo (not Servelec who are on Rotherside Road).

The building next door which is now Littlemoor Business Centre used to be the offices for Boart UK.

I visited my grandparents regularly in Eckington and would be allowed to play on "the rec" off the back of Lansbury Rd, and we'd sometimes walk through the allotments.

What was the square concrete area on the Lansbury Road rec? It was a large square shape with concrete walls about 12" high on 4 sides. On the front wall there was a gap probably the width of 2 doorways. It was next to the swings, not the roundabout side though.

Talking of 'recs' in Eckington. Does anyone remember the really high slide on Woodview rec? Also, wasnt there there a rec somewhere down Ashland Road before you got to the cannery?

  13. It wasn't completely tucked away. The shops were the centre of life on Park Hill flats for a long time; certainly during my time in the area the commemorative plaque/wall was opposite the post office, and down a small ramp from an entrance to Park Hill school (and adjacent to the sweet shop we all visited before school).

Additionally, for very many people who lived in nearby areas (Hyde Park etc), the plaque/wall was situated on a route through Park Hill to the city centre. It was within sight of Duke Street: there are a couple of photos on Picture Sheffield taken from Duke Street where you can see the plaque/wall peeking out from its position in the shoppping area.

So its location in a shopping/community area, on a much-used route into the city centre, and next to a school which served families from areas surrounding Park Hill, meant it was seen by more people than if it had been located in a position accessible mainly by the flats' residents.

ETA: The view from Duke Street.

I see now how it made sense to have the plaque within the shopping area. Just a shame it wasn't saved though.

  14. I took quite a few photos around Park Hill as the scaffolding was up for the first phase of modernisation - maybe 4 or 5 years ago and I didn't see the wall plaque. The shops had been demolished by then though as the inner areas were building free.

When I got the Park Hill book and saw the photo of the wall plaque, I just assumed it would be somewhere on one the ground floor walkways - say next to one of the pubs or the substation part. If it was then I assume it would have had to be kept as part of the listed status?
